Poor speeds on Samsung 980 Pro Nvme PCIE 4.0

Hi guys/gals,

I have tested my 2 1tb 980 pro nvme's with crystaldiskmark & I get pretty close to advertised speeds.

Also tested with Samsung Magician & get even better results closer to advertised specs.

However when I copy a 10gb file from one 980 pro to the other the max speed I'm getting is 700mb/s. It fluctuates between 400-700mb/s.

Do you know what's wrong? Am I missing a driver? I've installed all the drivers from my Asus motherboard support page.

Oh one more thing, the default windows copy handler wasn't working 100%, so I installed the latest version of teracopy. Please help?!

I checked the bios, it's set to pcie 4.0. Not sure what the issue is?

System specs? Is this an Intel or AMD system?

Also, check this thread to ensure you have the correct firmware installed on your 980 Pro drive:

It's an Intel system.

I've installed all the latest bios, drivers from Asus website. Also got the latest ME drivers & fiware installed.

These are my pc specs:
MB: Asus Z690 Maximus hero
RAM: 64gb (2x32gb) g.skill Trident Z 5600mhz ddr5
NVME: 2x Samsung nmve 1tb 980 pro
HDD: 2x Seagate Barracuda 4tb 3.5"
CPU: i9-13900k
GPU: Gigabyte 3080 Ti Eagle OC
COOLER: Gigabyte waterforce 360
CASE: CM TD500 mesh
PSU: Corsair HX1000

Shouldn't I be getting way faster speeds?

I'll check out the link & see if I can find any later drivers. Thanx

Do you have the Samsung 3.3 NVMe drivers installed? Your posted speeds are the same as my 980 Pro in a Z690 rig.

I'm going to try updating the drivers via Samsung Magician like the previous member mentioned.

Where can I find this 3.3 Nvme drivers?

Sorry for the noob question, this is the 2nd pc I've built in 10years, lol.

Samsung doesn't offer it or list it as being compatible for the 980 Pro.

When you're born in the 80s and hear the spoiled generations complaining about poor transfer speeds of 400-700 mb/s... while you remember transfer speeds of less than 1 mb - and were purely ecstatic seeing an HDD capable of 90 mb/s 10 years latter... Let alone the speeds of a nVme SSD. o_O Who knows...10 years for now - 100 petabyte at light speed - might be deemed really poor speed.

Anyway, i think you need really large files (like a video file of 3 terabytes) - to witness the advertised speeds in action. So, what exactly is you're transferring?! Cause for example - if you're to transfer the Windows folder & Program files to a 2nd SSD - the speeds may vary - even drop to your described speeds. A huge number of small files - can make even the fastest SSD struggle "a bit (incomparable to an HDD ofc)".

Hi,
These speeds are new to intel so expect bugs

Just make sure you're on the newest firmware !!!

That's odd. I'm using it with a 1TB 980 Pro in a Z690 rig running Win 11 Pro.

Hi Bobby,

So you also get actual write speeds of 700mb/s, even tho disk testing software say its read at about 7000mb/s & write at about 5000mb/s?

Tom's Hardware has their 980 Pro 1TB getting 1.2 GB/s so maybe what you are seeing is that your two M.2 drivers are sharing bandwidth. Which m.2 slots are the drives installed in? You want to occupy the slot directly connected to the CPU.

I have two PCIe 3.0 drives in my system and they get 1.5 GB/s. I would not expect the advertised synthetic speeds in most cases.

hmmmm I tried between my two kingston kc3000 and 4.2GB ISO and I barely got a screener

The file I'm trying to copy from one drive to the next is a 64gb Macrium Reflect backup file. It's not many small files, it's one large file.

I installed the latest Samsung magician, then it said there's a new version, so I downloaded it (the drivers were the same). However, there was a new tab called Performance Optimization, I selected Full Performance Mode instead of the Standard Mode it was on.

The driver name is still the same, same as version 3.3, its 5B2QGXA7.

After performance mode was activated, it gave about a 50mb/s higher on the read & write speeds. Still close to advertised speeds.

However the real world test with transferring the macrium backup file from the one 980 pro to the other 980 pro is maxed out at write speed 765mb/s

Is there maybe a bios setting I need to change or something else?

Actual read speeds slightly over 6800mb/s, can't recall the write speeds at the moment but they're not slow. My SK Hynix Platinum P41 1TB does over 7300mb/s in the same rig (actually I have two of them, one each in nearly identical Z690 rigs. The only difference between them is one is a 12600K and the other a 12700K. Drive benchmarks are within margin of error of being exactly the same) so I made it the main drive in that unit. I'm getting ready to build a new Z790/ 13600KF box and that's going to get one of the P41's, the 980 Pro will be the OS drive in one of the current Z690's.

OK so my 765mb/s is way off from where it's meant to be.

I found a Nvme driver on the Intel website, but once I download it there's an error. I contacted them about it, hopefully they reply tomorrow during office ours.

Yes, way off from what it should be performing at. The Intel NVMe driver isn't what you need. Your drive may be defective or there's a driver or configuration issue. Also, transfers of large amounts of small files are slower than transfer of a single large file.

I have 2 drives. When copying either way its the same speed.

So I highly doubt they're both defective. It has to be a driver issue.

I've tried to install drivers previously, then it says I have the latest drivers. Even when trying to update the drivers automatically via Windows.

Somethings fishy I hope I find the solution soon. Its not cool having a drive that runs at 15% of its advertised speed.

Speaking of not cool how hot are your 980's when under load? Overheating also affects performance. I never use drivers from Windows Update.

It may also be a configuration issue. Hard to diagnose without having it in front of me to explore. IRQ conflict, defective hardware, etc.

Have you inspected CPU usage while copying? Thinking some badly optimized anti malware software or similar is scanning the file while transferring.

Might be helpful to take a peek at Device Manager, then select View->Devices by connection:

Also, your active power plan might impact disk performance (at least it used to in earlier versions of win). I've read somewhere that in Win11, in the old legacy Control Panel->Power Options, you should leave it at Balanced, however in the new Power section under Win11 settings, you should select Best Performance for...erm...best performance :wtf:

OK in the power options, I tried balanced, high & ultra, all to no avail.

I did as you said with the device manager, the one that shows up dedicated is the gpu 3080 Ti. The other one, which I'm assuming is the Nvme drives show Standard NVM Express Controller. Should it have a dedicated Samsung 980 PRO sub heading?

When I try to install the latest Samsung 970pro 3.3 driver, it says Samsung NVM Express Device is not CONNECTED. Connect the Device & try again. Not sure why that's happening. I see both drives, it boots from the one & I'm able to see my working files on the other drive.
