Hello Everyone.

I've got a i7 13700k cooled by a Dark Rock 4 (non Pro) on a case Fractal Define S2 with Be Quiet fans on the case (1 back, 2 front), Asus ROG STRIX B660-F GAMING motherboard (because i don't intend to overclock the CPU), 32GB 6000Mhz DDR5 Ram, EVGA SuperNova G3 850W, and when i'm gaming, specially Battlefield 2042 wich is a very CPU demanding game, the CPU temps easly jump to 100º and doesn't go beyond that, and the RED CPU Led on the motherboard turns on, the normal temps doing nothing is about 35º at actual temps in my country and case conditions.

What can i do here to lower these temps without losing performance? I'm noob at OC/UV and that stuff, i just like plug and play stuff... Is this normal behavior of this CPU and i just ignore this?

Oh, and the only thing i've changed on my BIOS was the XMP Profile to make it run at 6000mhz, nothing else. Case fans are connected to the fan controller available on the case.

Thanks!

That is a way hotter than it should be depending on ambient temperatures, Did you remove the plastic protector from the bottom of the cooler, and did you get decent coverage with the thermal paste. Considering your cooler you should be sitting in the 75-85'C range when gaming.

In BF5 the CPU should only be using around 100-150-watts. So unless your power draw is far higher due to excessive voltage or bad contact / plastic still on bottom of the cooler something isn't quite right, however if fans are set way to low in regards to RPM that could explain the temperatures as well.

First thing is to check what your ambient temperatures are.

Second check fan profiles to see how high the CPU cooler fans are spinning up if they have been limited to keep sound in check your gonna see higher temperatures therefore need to find the sweet spot in regards to fan profile for the system.

If ambient temperatures are not excessive say 20-26C and fan RPM profiles are good then check cooler mount etc.

By "jump", do you mean it jumps from 35 to 100 straight away as you enter the game and stays there?

I'd suggest taking the CPU cooler off, checking if the plastic protector has been removed from the bottom, cleaning both the CPU and cooler and then repasting the CPU and remounting the cooler.

There is some improper contact between CPU and cooler, I reckon.

I had this cooler before i've upgraded my platform, so i can assure that it doesn't have any plastic protector on the bottom, and i always build the same way i did with this CPU, the thermal paste is new too as i got it yesterday along the CPU (Artic MX-4 2019 Edition) and i pasted on the middle of the CPU, as i always did, and done.

Case fans are connected to PSU Molex, because they are connected to the case fan controller, the only fan connected to motherboard is CPU fan.

I run the game, seconds later it jumps to 100º and stands between 96-100º all the time, mostly 100º. I tried to run cinebench, it jumped to 100º very fast and never went down from that during the 2mins i've tested.

Could this be any setting on the BIOS? I don't think the problem is on the cooler, i've been using this cooler for a very long time, multiple builds and CPU's, and never faced this problem before.

Maybe it's this. LGA-1700 CPUs are rectangular, so a dot of paste in the middle doesn't spread all along the heat spreader. Try redoing it with a line in the middle of the CPU (unless your cooler's cold plate is square).

If it doesn't help, the next thing I'd do is record the CPU's clock speeds and power consumption with HWinfo at the moment it reaches 100 °C, up until it stabilizes, just to see how much it throttles, which can be an indication of different things.

Did you get the correct mounting kit for LGA1700 to go with your cooler?

Yes, it was off. No, i tried activating it again with the option to limit at 90º, and this is the result:

Yes, everything is on AUTO... Well i'm a guy that is fan of the things should work out of the box, but since i never faced this before, i had to search for an answer. How can manage that then?

There's no need. HWinfo is the best for such things out there. Manufacturer-made programs are largely inaccurate anyway. I wouldn't recommend it.

The problem is, you run into a temperature wall because your CPU consumes so much power that your cooler can't handle it. I just checked, the Dark Rock 4 is rated for 200 W TDP CPUs, which your processor can easily exceed. What you'll need to do is
1. Modify your fan curve so that your fan hits 100% speed above 90-ish degrees,
2. Modify your CPU power limits so that it doesn't hit a thermal wall,
3. Buy a bigger/better cooler, or
4. A combination of the above.

One more thing, does your cooler get warm to the touch when the CPU runs so hot? If it doesn't, there's definitely a contact problem. If it does, see what I said above.

CPU went down to 91 degrees running CB R23
Because OP enabled a 90 °C limit on the CPU in the BIOS - not because of the fan curve.

I'm still with Asus performance enhancement 3.0 (90º limit) activated, and even with that option activated, and fun curve on turbo the CPU went to 95º , it shouldn't happen... At least in idle the temps are fine (35º).

I'm gonna try one thing, i'm going to buy this:

And install the Cooler again, and repaste again, then i will report here as soon as i do this process.

Please do. :)

I see your fan is already running at 100%.

If repasting and remounting won't help, then you can only lower your power limits in the BIOS, or get a better cooler.

It should be quick, i've ordered that Contact Frame from Amazon, and should arrive tomorrow or Saturday.

For the thermal paste, how you suggest to apply? I was thinking in two lines along the CPU, or a big one on the middle.

Also don't use too much.
When you take of the cooler and you see alot of paste squeezed out around the CPU, you used to much.

This definitely sounds like a badly installed cooler (or not removing the protective plastic from the base)
