"Far better" I don't think it is, but anyway the 1680 is too expensive for the usage I have (1080p games), could have bought one for ~100€ last year but it was not really an OC champ

I have a R4E by the way, but my main question was about the E5 2xxx, so 8 or x16 for the PCIE lines ? It's pretty easy to OC with BCLK on this board, I don't remember if you can put 125mhz cpu strap on a xeon but 125x36 makes a good turbo frequency and you can have tons of E5 2xxx for ~20€

Two more cores than a 4960X, better silicon, runs cooler overclocked, unlocked multiplier and scores much higher on Passmark. My two 1680's are very close to my 5960X at the same speed even with slower RAM. Mine do 4.7GHz, the 4960X was good for 4.5 and that was a binned chip. I'm not here to argue, those are the results I've personally gotten.Good luck.

Sure it's way better for synthetic stuff but I don't think there's a huge difference in games where you just need to display 60fps, even for the 0.1 / 1% lower frames, its more GPU related

I just complain about my 4960X because it's an ES and clearly not a OC champ, IMC is pretty bad, I was even planning to switch for a E5 1650 V2 just for that reason but I'm curious about the E5 26xx / 28xx now

I'm not a gamer, I do A/V production. For that the 1680 V2 obliterates the 4960X I had. I have other rigs with 16 and 22 core V4 Xeons in them on X99 that also work great for my needs but I still use the X79 more often. At this point, though, I'm done buying old hardware. I have 12600K, 12700K and 13600KF PC's that are in a totally different class of performance. Their only drawback is heat and I have that covered as well. The Xeons run amazingly cool.

Just as modern CPUs outperform the 1680/5960X, wondering why you keep them if you have acces to modern platforms

By the way, I have a strange issue with my 4960X, it's totally fine with 4.0ghz with a high 1.3V on cores, but not able to POST if I crank up to 4.1ghz, I tried with 1.4V and still fail

VTT/VCCSA are already set to 1.2V to keep 2133mhz and I tried to go down to 1600mhz but still fail to POST at 4.1ghz

What's the matter ?

For the same reason I have a few "classic" cars as well as a new one. I still find enjoyment driving the old ones at times. I have enough fully functional PC's to qualify as a hoarder.

Every CPU is slightly different; some are silicon lottery winners (I've been lucky and had a few), others are just average and a few are genuine losers (I've had some of those too). If you know the process of how CPU's are manufactured and assigned rankings/model numbers you'll understand.

You stated that your 4690X is an ES. Being an engineering sample there's no way of knowing what's enabled or disabled compared to a final release version. Yesterday I saw a couple of 1680 V2's on Ebay for under $70. You'll get better performance from one of those than any ES 4960X. Two more cores, better silicon and genuine final release versions.

Haha you really want me to buy a 1680 but I have no use for it, maybe it would have been useful 2 years ago for Cyberpunk with ray tracing activated, it was the first time I saw all 12 threads above 90% in a game

But I think I won't invest any more pennies in X79

Just tossing it out there for you. I'm done with old hardware as far as buying CPU's or mobos myself. My 13700KF build may be my last ever.

Hello, glad to see this thread is still active o/

I was planning to buy a cheap 2667 v2 to compare with my current 4960X, but I just read that the E5-2xxx are limited to PCIE x8 for the graphics card (visible on a cpu-z screenshot from a Sabertooth too)

Is that true ?
No. I have 2667 V2 with 3 GPUs in passthrought mode. x16/x16/x8 working without problems.
If you have quality board, 2667 will do 4 GHz all core with 111 MHz BCLK.
Rampage IV can hold 113 MHz, but my MSI board starts to cause problems at 112.
But 1680 is a better choice since it is unlocked. You'll get cca 10% higher clocks ...

Good news then, I'll buy one as a backup CPU in case my 4960X goes down

Too bad you just can't clock the E5 to 4.5ghz with a 125mhz on cpu strap just like the i7

No straps for Xeon, but if you have a quality board that supports offset voltage, then you can use all turbo multipliers with eg. 113 BCLK.
25 MB L3 is a very nice bonus over desktop parts so maybe 4960 should be a spare part? :)

Probably but no real gain for my current use, it's just an internet basic multimedia machine at the moment, everything runs amazingly well and smooth, no crashes, no bsod, no noise and no hot spot, that's amazing for an old thing like this

The E5 will be the spare part, because I'm too lazy switching the CPUs, plus reinstall the quad channel kit and tweak everything until it works perfectly, can't,do that now

Yes, you are correct.
Thanks! Kinda cheating had one for like 6 years now.
The E5 2xxx don't have, that's what he meant
I had a feeling that's what he meant... But I figured stating what I knew about the 1680 would end up clarifying what he meant.

Aye....I can also confirm this......my 2697 V2 on Asus Sabertooth works on 115 BCLK for few years already without any issues .....

Just a little rant:
Ordered 1680V2 yesterday after two years with 2667V2.
For 50 euros, I just couldn't skip it.
Current 2667 runs 4 GHz at 1.15 V, 4.4 single thread with 1.225, but NVMe disk can't run 110 BCLK :-(
I've added ReBAR and NVMe modules to BIOS and with 1680 there isn't much more to do with this platform.
Had X79 since it came out. Tried 4 different boards (RIVE, Formula, Asrock and MSI) and several different CPUs (few 3930s, 2680V2, and 2667V2).
Even tried several different Ryzen platforms but lack of PCIe is just awful.
I'm using current system as dual boot Win/ESXi server running 3 CAD stations for more than a decade.
It is a very sad state today that high PCIe count systems are so damn expensive...

What's the turbo all cores ratio for the 2697 ?

Are Xeons limited to 1866mhz for memory or you can go higher ?

I believe that ram speed can go higher then 1866Mhz some people claim even higher then 2133Mhz....depends really if you do the BCLK oc or not personally my ram working somewhere around 1550Mhz but I have all 8 slots occupied.....

1866 is max officially supported, but higher dividers are available.
RIVE can hold 2000 MHz reliably with 8x8GB so I suppose you could push it to at least 16*115 on Sabretooth ...

Nah.....unfortunately I can't because i have mixed ram sticks and few of those are 1333Mhz so when I tried to go above 1600Mhz always 1-2 sticks refuse to wake up but honestly could not care less instead I tweaked manually memory timings and everything works just fine like this so it's all good....

The 2xxx series is much more limited ram-wise from what I've seen posted here but can do up to 2000-2400 and the 1680 I've had ram up to 2800 mhz totally stable, may even do near 3000 if you loosen settings and find a kit that is capable.

I've been using Corsair Dominator DDR3 2133 with a 103.5 BLCK for as long as I've had the 1680 in that rig.

Been a while since we’ve posted on here. But saw you say you were getting a 1680 did it ever arrive and how did the install go?

I also have some thermal grizzly Conductonaut I used on my 7900 xtx and it significantly cooled it down! I had the very high temp hotspot issue that fixed it. But reason I mentioned it is I’m going to run a stress test on my 1680 with current paste and then use Conductonaut and see how much it cools it down.
