Tower making big grinding noise?

Hi guys, ok so recently my tower has been making this big grinding/riving noise. And i have to give the tower a little love tap fevery so often or it to stop. Are these signs of the HD giving out or a heat sink? I tried to listen in closely and cant really tell where it is coming from, but it does seem to be from the front of the case. :confused:

Specs:
P4 3.0ghz
Intel d865gbfl series mobo
450w ps
90g maxtor hd
visiontek hd 2600xt 512mb
2g pc3200 ddr400 kingston ram
xp pro

The Maxtor, do you know if it's a rebadged Seagate?

Do you have any fans at the bottom front of your case?

UMM i couldnt tell you for sure, i know the hd is atleast 4 yrs old. I dont have any fans at the bottom of the case really, 1 is pretty much on the side panel, 2 on the back under the PS.

I'd make sure fans aren't hitting cables before thinking about a dead hard drive

make sure no PSU wires are hitting the HSF on your cpu

its definetly not cables hitting the fans :mad:

The noise is unbareble. Could it be the PS ? The noise seems to be coming from the upper area from what i can tell.

If I were you, I'd turn off your computer, unplug ONE component, turn it on, and see if the noise is gone. This includes hard drives, optical drives, fans, etc. If noise is still there, repeat process until you've found the problem

Oh, and try not to let it boot into Windows (enter "setup" instead), and ONLY UNPLUG STUFF WHEN THE COMPUTER IS OFF.

Thanks for all the quick replies guys, but i guess this was my fault, i just cleaned out a clog of dust out of the power sup's fan LOL. Anyways problem is solved, "for now", i feel silly :laugh:

take the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels and put it to your ear, it works like a sound tunnel and blocks out other noises so you only hear what you point it at. this will let you pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

my guess is it is a case fan, they can humm, chirp, squeal, grind, whine, and growl when the bearings start going out but most times if given a light tap it makes them silent again.

lol well bad news, after 6 hrs of quiet, the noise came back, i will try the roll technique after it acts up again. :rockout:

I get that sometimes on a cold day during boot up. Probably a bad fan or something.
