Less FPS after upgrading from nvidia 1660s to amd 6700 (not xt,10 gb vram)

Hello everyone, I have transitioned from a 1660 Super to a Radeon 6700. While I was getting 70-90 FPS on FurMark with the 1660 Super, with the 6700 (the 10GB version without the XT), the FPS went up to 140-150, and so far, everything seemed as expected... Then, after using DDU to remove the Nvidia driver and some other steps, I eagerly jumped into a game. In RDR2, I started getting even lower FPS than I did with the 1660 Super :D I moved on to ETS2 and experienced more than a 20% FPS drop. At one point, the FPS even dropped to 1, though it wasn’t actually 1. Anyway, I switched to Valorant and still had the same problem, constant micro-freezes and lower FPS. I thought, okay, I get it, so I did a format, but I still feel like I’m not fully utilizing the card... Are there any friends who can help me out?

And one more thing is that vram mhz was almost full then i lowered the resolution from 180,which is max rate, to 170 and then its something like 20-200 idle. But as i said i want to get more and more stable fps... Please help me out guys im new in that amd thing :(

and i have i5 12400f
16 gigs ram
500 gb hdd and 250 gb ssd
gigabyte h610mhdd4 mainboard
win 11

I see your rig has only 16GB of RAM, Have you noticed how much RAM your using while playing your games? as 16GB for me is no good for gaming anymore and needed 32GB. Just thought id ask :)

@Ursamajor

did you make sure to be offline for cleaning/reinstall?
did you disable automatic driver install (win update) in DDU settings?

@Melvis
lol, wut?
i have 16gb and can play stuff at 2/4K without issues, even newer stuff like Forza 5, and that includes a gpu with only 8gb vram.

I have more than 6 gigs when playing

I reinstalled windows so i guess they don't matter. And just fyi i did them as u said ://

I suspect CPU (not GPU!) overheating and throttling. Check if that's the case.

You didn’t mention, what’s your PSU?
Whatever it is both 1660S and 6700 non-XT are indistinguishable in this regard. It don't matter. They even spike the same.

Also, have you tried cleaning the PCIe connector and reseating the GPU?
It's msi mag a650bn 650watt psu

unfortunately no cpu is fine too... max 75 degrees

You seem to be complaining more of stuttering rather than an across the board performance drop, but it's hard to be sure without real numbers.

When you change the drivers (or the whole graphics card), any games which use shaders will need to recompile them. I've heard that in some games, on AMD graphics cards, this can be more pronounced. I'm not sure if all (or any) of those games compile shaders though.

If this stuttering resolves itself afterwards, then it might be from shader compilation? If it's persistent, then I don't know. An RX 6700 should be capable of anything a GTX 1660 Super is, and then some. Outside of perhaps very specific conditions, you shouldn't be getting less performance.

Also, with a faster graphics card on the same CPU, you are going to increase your average/maximum frame rate, but not the minimum. Stutters are the result of variance in frame times,. So if you're doing this based on "feel" with no frame rate cap in place, especially if some of these games are compiling shaders... then I can see this being the impression.

Im glad you can! but once you start playing more intensive games or even free games like Marvel Rivals or Icarus they use more then 16GB of RAM. Once you hit this RAM limit you will get issues like what he is talking about or worse the game just freezes and crashes.

Below is a quick picture to show how much RAM Icarus can use.
Marvel Rivals just hits over 16GB. I can screen shot it for you if you want!

The amount of RAM is not the issue. 16GB is fine. Yes games can use more, but just because a game can use 20GB RAM does not mean it requires 20GB RAM.

What does this mean? Are the stutters solved, and now you're having other problems?

Tell that to the two games I just mentioned! they will tell you otherwise! if you dont have enough they will not run! period!

I agree its probably not the main issue! but it is something to take into account honestly and for the future.

It's quite clear performance went from double your fps to what you have now.... after you used ddu to remove stuff. You are supposed to remove drivers before you install. You need to remove all drivers and start again.

The people I play Icarus with have 16GB and it's fine.

Well not for me and with my screen shot of showing how much it uses, I beg to differ. Try Marvels since its free and see how long you last in game till it locks up and freezes on you

nah mate stutters stand still but my fps on ets2 is between 160-200 i did something on radeon program and its good now but i still have some more stutters...

@Redwoodz
no, you dont have to remove/uninstall drivers. the whole purpose of ddu is to clean the system of any leftovers, if you dont remove them, ddu will.

same for clean install/reset if win, you dont uninstall drivers, before doing it.
unless you meant install of the (new) gpu.
and while uninstall is prefered, you can still swap cards without, as long as you clean after the new one is in, using safe boot and reboot before 2nd cleaning.

@Melvis
unless i missed something, the fact is, consoles have ~16gb, so unless its a pc game only, why would the design games from the ground up to use more resources than millions of gamers have, playing on consoles?

Both marvel rivals and icarus run absolutely fine on 16gb of ram.

Obviously they work fine, playing marvel on my laptop that has 13gb of ram. The game doesn't even go above 7-8. Obviously if you have 32 gb of ram windows will just stretch and use more of it, as is the case with vram too.

Thats Console.......not PC, you gotta remember that the graphics on a console is alot less then on a PC hence the less requirements.....

I can tell you for a fact it does not! maybe unless you have your settings on real low? But I can tell you now it doesnt. At first I thought it would run perfectly fine on my second PC that did only have 16GB of RAM, the game launched, I started a match but it was very choppy and laggy, and within a few mins the game had frozen and then crashed, I was thinking WHY! I have a RTX 4060 and its at 1080P but then I noticed that the RAM was maxed out! So I bought another 2 Sticks of RAM and increased my second rig to 32GB same as my main Rig which ran the game perfectly fine even at 1440P and yep as I thought! it fixed the issue and it was indeed using just over 16GB of RAM, 16.3GB to be exact but that was enough for the game to freeze and crash.

Below is a screen shot of my second rig in game with just Discord running in the background and you can see it is using over 16GB!

-- Was the radeon 6700 non xt bougt new or second hand?

You may need to repaste your graphic card also when the purchase date is older as 24 months.

Gotta make sure all the C++ runtimes are installed so on and so forth. These things we don't know about.

But will make a suggestion to use driver 24.12.1 DCH, newer ones have been reported issues, @Macro Device also uses this driver.

And that's why. Try doing that with a 5090 and its 32 GB VRAM, and 32 GB isn't enough. I've been constantly running into problems when my VRAM usage is high, had to extend the swap file to dodge the crashes ever since I bought mine.

Go to the Processes tab and take a screenshot, upload it here

that's kindda people who close everything before they actually launch a game lol so they could play even with 8 GB lmfao:D

@Dr. Dro
what has swap file to do with ram? i can increase that on any system with enough storage.
and with 10gb on OP gpu, 16 is still more than enough, or they game wouldnt run after clean install, and still show issues?!
