Sony Patents PS2 Emulation Software for PS3

I really wonder if this patenting is addressing an old subject... are newer ps3s going to have backwards compatibility? Any way I have a classic 60gb so my worries are NONE.

Just hope that this would give some clues to PCSX2 team.

Oh, so NOW they are THINKING of properly emulating their most successful games machine. Too little too late I say.

I cant believe its taken this long for them to make an emulator for there own console

Really? Because last time I checked Sony still sold the PS2 at almost every major retailer... So it makes business sense for them to only include PS1 backwards compatibility. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying from Sony's stand point it makes sense.

Now that the PS2 is starting to come close to end of life, it makes sense for them to add it now...

May 2009 NPD numbers:

The first NPD figures of 2009 have been released and, boy, are they a doozy. Let’s start with the hardware figures:

Hardware:

Wii - 679,000
DS - 510,000
Xbox 360 - 309,000
PS3 - 203,000
PSP - 172,000
PS2 - 101,000

I mean if you really care that much about backwards compatibility for the PS2, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10756401

I don't want to crush anyones dreams or hopes here (I for one am one of those begging for the BC to come back), all this shows is a schematic on how to run the Emotion Engine (CPU of PS2) on the Cell. This has been done on the ps3 since EU-Launch, the PAL-PS3s had only the Graphics Synthesizer (GPU) on board and had the EE fully emulated in software. Newer PS3-Models have NO Chip from the PS2 on board; neither GPU nor CPU. This would therefore ask for a GPU emulation aswell, of which there is no sign whatsover in this patent..

So again guys, don't get your hopes up. But seriously, with all this commotion about PS2-BC everytime a rumor surfaces, Sony should really wake up already. :nutkick:

Why would they even bother with this then ?

Sooo my 40GB PS3 cant use this then? I cant see why it cant, but meh, oh well.

id probably buy the best units out for all consoles altho i have the wii already.

I read everywhere that this feature will be available on every ps3 via the cell processor acting as an emulation engine. Every ps3 has a cell processor thus every ps3 will be able to have backwards compatability.

On my brief scanning I thought with the patent, they would work on the non emotion engine ps3s with emulated code. Guess I was wrong.

i want ps2 emulation in the new PSP please :respect::respect::respect:

Thats physically impossible due to the percentage of hardware overhead needed for any emulation of the PS2.

According to this article itself, it only details emulation of the Emotion Engine, not the graphics sub-system of the PS2.

They way I see it, this is just them covering their asses on former emulation, before a 3rd party tries to get a piece of the pie.

Meh, either way, I have a 60GB launch console, so it doesn't effect me anyway. lol.

I read on another news site that this patent was filed in 2007, so it's not exactly a new idea which makes the likelyhood of it becoming a reality even more remote...

Patents seem to take forever to get approved. Some of my father's patents had taken around three years to get approved. Like the 3D image projectors he designed that are complicated designs take much longer to get approved. There must be a large amount of bureaucracy in the process.

Why would they even bother with this then ?

They filed the patent for the emulator that was implemented in the PAL-60GB and old 80GB; this just simply ain't nothing new. :ohwell:

As someone else already pointed out; they filed this in 2007 and it's only been approved recently; it really says nothing about whether they are working on it or not.

Sincerly I hope they are; as a PS3 without PS2-Support is a severly crippled PS3 in my book.

Thank you for clearing that up :)

Oh well. My statement still stands, that is the requirement for me to buy one. Otherwise PS2's just dropped to $99 at my local Target.

I doubt that. They can't give us a price cup even with the current form factor, and they're losing the race because of it.

I believe they haven't cut the price because they don't want to hurt their stand-alone blu-ray player sales.

Though I wish they would make some more hardware cuts, and possibly lock the ability to play blu-ray movies in the software, and release an even cheaper version.

Exactly why I made sure to pick up a 60GB PS3 when it was announced that the new versions wouldn't have PS2 support. Oddly though, I haven't actually played a single PS2 game on it in the over 2 years I've owned it. I've stuck some PS2 games in it just to test it, but never actually sat down and played a game on it... Though FFVII has been calling my name recently.

Its also because the guys at PTO are mostly low wage immigrants lol. My dads friend works their and brings people in.

Nice, you've had that 60GB since launch? I respect that sir. I have the gunmetal grey mgs4 ps3 and a resident evil 5 xbox 360.

i agree as they still are having problems with speed and compatability plus the fact you need an core i 25 to run it:laugh:
Oh, so NOW they are THINKING of properly emulating their most successful games machine. Too little too late I say.

i agree to a point because if you want to play ps2 games you just get a ps2
as someone who dabbles massively with emulators,i at first got excited by the prospect of being able to play ps2 games on the pc but then i realised whats the point i've got a ps2
which still works (slight laser probs but nothing to write home about) the only benefit would be better graphics
downsides (in summer)excess heat from pc
plus i can get most of the games anyway for the pc(yes yes there are a few ps2 exclusive titles)
as for ps2 emulation on the ps3 yes they really did waste an oppertunity there a golden 1

Well, I got it right after the first price cut, because I knew they were getting rid of the 60GB model for the 80GB model without the emotion engine. It's a launch console, but bought months after launch.

im a hard core psp modder and i agree it will absolutely never happen the technical diffirences are staggering.

Just release a PSThree and lower the fucking price so I can buy Gran Turismo 5 when it eventually comes out. No point in spending €400 on a console when I only want 1 game.

When is GT5 coming out? I bet I could finish Forza 3 when it comes out and GT5 still won't be out.

GT5 is supposedly coming out by the end of this year fall/winter. Trust me... I want it too. The benchmark of all racing games.

im not going to say that is a benchmark as no game is benchmark for Racing Sims, they all have flaws.
