Microsoft has decided to bow to pressure from users and give Windows XP Home Edition an extension on its lifetime, giving users at least an extra year of support. Microsoft had originally planned to end free support in January 2009, but the company's Japanese president has said that "It will be significantly extended," continuing "When I say significantly, it's more than 1 year." An official announcement is expected on Thursday, but this means users should be secure with Windows XP up until 2010, possibly for longer.

I'm not surprised here XP is the best MS has ever done to a OS. Charging 100s of $ for a new look and a few extra features isn't flying with the "majority" after all. I gotta give MS credit for a quick response and willingness to adapt and adjust instead of "stay the course". Looks like we are getting SP3 after all (well before 2009).

Is that not what every OS is? A new look and extra features? What honestly do you expect? Do you know how many changes have been made to the underlying OS to come up with that? Have you extensively used Vista to make an accurate comparison, or are you just jumping on the bandwagon, like everyone else during an MS release?

How much more is OSX giving me for $130 every 12 months? 5 releases in 6 years?

What kind of post is this? Are you picking/trolling for a fight?

I'm starting a discussion with you. Every topic regarding Vista has you chiming in about how much it sucks, how it's not worth the money, how they made no changes in 5 years. That they are just rereleasing XP with a new skin. So I'm asking you for valid information to support your argument.

I kinda skipped a few genneration of windows; Jumping from 95 to XP. Took me a while to get used to XP, and seems like as soon as I did they announced they were releasing Vista.
Yes, I have tried Vista, and it looks OK, but I'm not reasy to give up XP yet!! I will probably skip XP and go to the next version after that!(If I live that long)!!:toast:

yay i got home atm but its not much use for me unless they allow dx10 to work i also skipped from win 95 to xp

Thats the way it should be... good job microsoft.

Alright. This is good news.

Does anyone have figures regarding the number of PCs in general use split by Shop Bought with OEM OS, and self build/upgrade with user defined OS?

I'd imagine the majority are shop bought, or company supplied and shipped with the OS of the day, i.e. the most current MS OS. Therefore at the peak of any OS product lifecycle, it will be have the biggest share of the market and therefore require the biggest share of support.

Regardless of how the modding/techy market embrace Vista, every shop bought PC will have Vista from this year on, so it wont be long before its the dominant OS.

Good work on this MS, its a good gesture, but lets be honest by 2010 the cost to them of supporting XP will be negligible*, as whilst it will probably still be the 2nd biggest OS it will be tiny in comparison to Vista.

*negligible in terms o Bills Bank account, not ours

It's too early to reach a firm conclusion about Vista yet. Remember, XP has had 2 two serivce packs and possibly hundreds of updates to improve it. I think the biggest problem with the beta versions of Vista was that it used a lot of RAM and impacted on 3D performance, but DX10 might compensate for that within a year or so. Once there are better drivers and all the little tweaks are out, I think it will have a better image. Admittedly XP is pretty much 100% stable for me, one of the most important factors.

Overcast, there really is no point in arguing with EastCoasthandle. All he does is make bold trollish statements then never backs them up. He went on some big long rant a week or so ago about how Vista EULA wasn't a big enough improvement over XPs...it is pointless to argue with someone that far gone.

Please guys, let's not get into another flame war over the Vista vs XP debate. There's been too many of those, this is a news thread - not a place to settle disputes. If you have an issue with something another user says, feel free to disagree with it if you have the evidence to back it, but don't just argue for the sake of it. TPU is a nice site, let's keep it like that.

Any word one what SP3 will actually offer?

I figured they would,...now they just to let it go open source in 09'.

Just the odd fix here and there I think, from what I read it shouldn't be as major as SP2. Very little to go on yet though.

Ladies & Gent's

please stay objective. I do not see any reason for any deletion yet. Yes it is not the best and openminded discussion ever, but nothing bad yet.

Keep in mind, to check you egos at the door. If someone posts a point that opposes yours, no need to take it personal. That is the way discissions are done..

cheers
DS

think that DX10 will get hacked before SP3 cause you know if it does M$ will use SP3 to block DX10 right

I would recommend getting this thread back on track, and keeping it there, if you all would like to continue to discuss this topic :) .

SP3? I am still using SP1, lol. That is a good thing since I don't want to upgrade to vista until I am sure that XP has been milked dry.
