Gears of War Ultimate Edition "A Disaster" in DX12!

LOL, I was just saying in the Ubisoft recycled Far Cry 4’s maps in Far Cry Primal thread, that Ubi and MS are one and the same in their monumental tech failures. They both often have good ideas, but suck at implementing them.

Honestly though, this sounded like an insult to PC players to begin with, considering all we get is a rehashed, resurfaced GoW 1, and are still missing out on the sequels that console got. And to be truthful, I don't even like the look of the Dx12 version anyway. The detail is slightly better, but it has a butt ugly green tint to it that ruins the entire color palette of what you see on screen.

I've yet to feel like I'm missing out not having installed W10.

It can look as good as reality itself and I still wouldn't buy it. Steam, GOG or even Origin. I'm not touching this Microsoft's proprietary locked down garbage. I haven't played the original, so if I skip this one out as well, I won't be missing anything. Though, I might get the original instead.

The question though is if the original will even stilk play, since it is not obe of the games that had the GFWL disabled. And it probably won't work on W10 in any case.

Well, I played Bulletstorm like 1 year ago and it had GFWL and it worked fine. I even logged into it with my Live account. It is majestically annoying and clumsy, but it kinda worked.

There's actually a fix for that in Bulletstorm. a tiny .dll if I recall, that actually disables it in that game, cancelling the check for gfwl it does.

I feel like this is less "bad port" and more "Windows app mode has a huge performance penalty for it's dumb framework"

The reason why I avoid such proprietary garbage is because of experience. A lot of games from 90's work out of the box even on Windows 10 64bit. But pretty much all with such garbage cause problems even 2-3 years after release. Freaking ALWAYS. GFWL was problematic even when they didn't wreck the service...

Whats most hilarious about this clusterfuck is AMD on Win10 with DirectX12 when it comes to drivers and implementation is following Microsoft to the LETTER in terms of supporting it. Just goes to show microsoft has no clue what they are doing.

Still, GFWL was unnecessary, annoying and was bound to cause trouble. And it did and it does. But games without this extra crap, they work fine.

For example UT99. It worked on Windows 98, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8.x and 10 in original form. No fiddling, hacking and patching. It just works. Where have those days gone?

The more I look at this new graphics "upgrade", the more I think it's not better in any way. The lighting and colors are a bit warmer, but I can't really say it's more detailed after looking closer, because all the textures seem to be noticeably blurred. It appears they tried to stretch an old Dx9 engine game too far.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call the game a "turd' as for it's time it was pretty decent EVEN on console. But it's definitely a fossil now.

I was on the verge of buying the game, added a M$ account and was gonna purchase the game. Two things stopped me dead cold, first being my misplacing my wallet with my CC's in it, and secondly, decided to read some reviews and impressions of the game and WOW! What a cluster-EFF! Decided to look for my original GoW discs to install the game instead (now, where the heck are the discs?!)

Edit - Read somewhere that hardware PhyX (IIRC) is enabled by default, hence NVidia cards tend to do better than AMD cards. Also read that you cannot disable PhyX, sure you can hack it and change it, but upon resetting or restarting the game, it'd reset back to enabled and you're so screwed.

That would be incredibly dumb if that's the case... but hardly unbelievable. Do you have a source for this? Now I'm intrigued.

Found it here, dunno how reliable it is though. Not only is PhysX enabled, it seems Gameworks HBAO+ is generically named/labeled and enabled by default as well, this causes graphics corruption according to the article. Normally, I'm skeptical about things like that, but when it comes to NVidia, especially Gameworks, I'm dunno what to think, but I'm more apt to buy into it....
