PC version of Gears of War (a Windows Store Exclusive) released this week through the Windows Store. Did anyone even notice?

Apparently DX12 is "catastrophically broken" on Radeon cards in this game. The picture (no pun intended) for NVIDIA is better, but by no means great either.

The article talks of The Fury X being incapable of steady framerates, with similar trouble for R9 380 and the Nano as well. Interestingly, older architecture like the R7 370 ran fine.

The problem may be the actual game, rather than the cards though. Gears of War was never designed to be DX11 or DX12 game, and is still basically running on the rusty 2006 architecture.

Those hoping for another game to compare architectures and how well they work in DX12 are going to have to continue to settle for Ashes of The Singularity.

Surprised? I'm not, it's MS! Read about it here:

But what happened to all the AMD fanboys going on about how AMD cards were going to be so much better in DX12?

But what happened to all the AMD fanboys going on about how AMD cards were going to be so much better in DX12?

Unfair comment. This is microsoft's immensely self propagating volume of idiocy. It has nothing to do with AMD's implementation (or Nvidia's for that matter). It should serve as a warning though that DX12 (or any weirdly retrofitted implementation of it on an older game engine) may be not what was expected. Without sounding like a broken record, it would be stupid of people to base all DX12 expectations on Ashes of the Singularity. It IS an AMD centric title, regardless of how much the developer tries to remain neutral. The same guys did StarSwarm, Mantle's first outing.

This GoW DX12 fiasco is developer day gone wrong. Slow clap for MS.

To be fair, neither side works great in this game. It's really a game issue not an AMD or NVIDIA issue. This is about MS getting their grubby hands in the PC gaming they claim to support.

I liken what they tried to do with this "upgrade" to the game, as similar to trying to shove a V-10 into the hood of an old Yugo that wasnt made for it.

I admit I only noticed the game dropped when I saw the nvidia driver drop... I bought the game, and it runs fine for me. I hope others have a good experience eventually, still a great game even if it is a remake/retool.

That's good to hear. They did say the higher end NVIDIA cards did better, and you've got a 970.

Heard about it being horribly broken on AMD cards and poor performing on Nvidia even unless you've got a beast system. Seems like the optimization team did not do a good job making sure this thing worked before pushing it out.

But what happened to all the AMD fanboys going on about how AMD cards were going to be so much better in DX12?
You do realize this is a game issue not an "Who is better at DX 12" issue. The game clearly had almost no optimizations done to it.

I was very disappointed when I heard this. I couldn't believe another big game release was allowed without fixing major issues!

The flagship AMD cards can't run it and even get outperformed by older AMD cards; and apparently the 390x way outperforms Fury X. And the game doesn't work with Nvidia's Gsync either and users have to turn it off to play normally. Lame!

I have been SOOO excited for this release, my boys and i used to play this when it first released on Xbox....I cant beleive it came out.

Aye, this game series is the reason I still have my Xbox 360.

Here's a sample of this horrible stuttering

Did anyone ever bought anything from MS Store? Curious how their refund system works.

When I bought Gears, last night, I swear saw a split second flash of "no refunds"... As far as I know, there are none, but it could be region specific maybe... This may be of interest:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/DisplayHelpReturnsRefundsPage

Edit:

I found this (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/servicesagreement/):

  • g. Refund Policy. You will be entitled to a cancellation period (a "Cooling-Off Period") of fourteen (14) days from the day of purchase. If the Service is partly delivered at the time of cancellation, you will get a pro-rated refund. The Cooling-Off Period ends at the time the Service is fully delivered to you and your purchase cannot be refunded. When you purchase digital content from us, you will cease to have the right to cancel from the moment when you begin the download. To request a refund, complete the form at the account management link provided in "Cancelling the Services" below. Unless otherwise provided by law or by a particular Service offer, all purchases are final and non-refundable. If you believe that Microsoft has charged you in error, you must contact Microsoft and we will investigate the charge. If we issue a refund or credit, we are under no obligation to issue the same or similar refund in the future. Microsoft reserves the right to refuse a refund request if it reasonably believes (i) if you are in breach of these Terms or (ii) if Microsoft reasonably suspects that you are using our Products or Software fraudulently or that your Microsoft or Skype account is being used by a third party fraudulently. no re-funds and a lot are bitching about it. GOW is just an app and runs in windowed version and not true aspect.
They know there's a problem and a fix will be out soon from what I've read on the GOW forums..

I have the re-make on the xbone and just stream it to my PC and it runs great.. I was all excited until I learned its only going to be available in the M$ app store..

Good move M$, why not let steam sell a proper version for ya... what an EPIC fail!

:shadedshu:

It doesn't surprise me that cards in either camp are going to have issues with various programs/games as they try, or don't try, to implement M$'s newest money grab/ market cornering technique. It has happened/is happening/will continue to happen.

I didn't intend for a red/green battle. It was supposed to highlight the follies of the MS store games, the dubious act of adding DX12 to a 2006 game, and the slow adoption of DX12.

I didn't intend for a red/green battle. It was supposed to highlight the follies of the MS store games, the dubious act of adding DX12 to a 2006 game, and the slow adoption of DX12.
:) Sorry, first glance looked to be a knee-jerk reaction to a camp-attack heheh. That'll teach me not to make knee-jerk reactions :)

really? You're going to dig into a Red/Green battle with "Unfair Comment!!" ....

:shadedshu:

It doesn't surprise me that cards in either camp are going to have issues with various programs/games as they try, or don't try, to implement M$'s newest money grab/ market cornering technique. It has happened/is happening/will continue to happen.

Jeez - read my post. I was saying it was unfair of the guy who commented on AMD.... And I blame MS for it.

Yeah, and at some point this may turn into a battleground, although I certainly hope not. I tried to present the facts as stated, as well as the article for those that wanted to read in detail. In order to do that, I did have to mention that the AMD high end cards did not fare well.

Really though, it appears to be a mess for anything except older AMD and high end NVIDIA, so I call it even, with the real loser being all of us due to a botched job, and the whole MS Store gaming thing.

How can you fuck up a 10 years old game on a new API that's suppose to be faster and with less overhead? I bet they did the same nonsense they always do (along with stupid Win10 app thing). They redesigned a game, stepped back and noticed they gaind 10fps with DX12. So they spent another 60fps on totally worthless and useless effects. Like tessellation that no one fucking knows how to use it proper way. I've literally not seen a single game that has done it right and not used it as a complete waste of graphics power.

It's like if you're at a traffic light with M$ the police guy behind you. You can stop at red or go on green but either way you're getting pulled over.
