In what can dubbed as a fiasco, the much anticipated 2.40 firmware update for the Playstation 3 (PS3) gaming console which was released the other day, has been scrapped owing to several units facing acute problems with the new firmware. The new firmware had brought in new features such as an in-game XMB access and a trophy support along with enhanced gamer profile system.

Shortly after the update went online, several users began reporting problems with the update. A thread at the official Playstation 3 forums is currently over 60-pages and is filled with a number of ranting PS3 owners. Kokatu.com reports that the new firmware causes controller malfunctions, and sometimes corrupts the system completely. One of the solutions included that the user could remove and format the hard-drive and reinsert it, the system will prompt the user to format it following which the system will return to normalcy. Of course, you lose all previous firmware update along with all your saved games and user profiles. If you are a victim of this, please visit this site for possible solutions.

Sony has come up with a statement saying "In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up".

With inputs from Kokatu, Gamesindustry.biz

I'm glad I was late on that update. Although I told my boss to upgrade to it for sure earlier today...

hrm...well nobody on tpu has had a problem with it yet.

and I hope no one ever does.

Is this international or just to one region? Could be a server error, corrupting the file?

no?

Seems like Sony are taking tips from ms how to brick a system with an update.

LOL, now all they need to do is smack an un-reliable CPU and GPU onto it, take out a few cores, then presto!

Anyone else who upgraded afraid to turn on their PS3? The first thing I am going to do is back up everything from the hard drive.

I've had no problems. The people who have problems are the people who DON'T properly upgrade their equipement.

Those who DO NOT restore system defaults after every upgrade should expect problems like this. And I bet you not one person with the problem has ever restored their defaults.

I'm glad I was late to the update as well. I have the original 60GB model. I would like to keep it for a long time. I like my ps2 hardware to be in there.

wow I updated and nothing happened to my ps3, guess im one of the lucky few

Parents haven't had any trouble with it yet ether.. Maybe someone just didn't like the new firmware?

Ravenas: Love the Chuck Norris :rockout:

Apple bricked thousands of Iphones intentionally. Thats the biggest brick score.

The download went really slow, but mine updated fine.

So far, after looking at IGN, and Gamespot, I haven't seen but one person in almost 100 posts even have a problem.. I just think it's a person or two that couldn't install it right due to ether slow connection, or something happened to have lost the connection.. IMO

Or a corrupted install file with no real way for the PS3 to check if the install is corrupt before installing it. No hash check etc.

I wish I could be as informal as that...our policies don't allow me to. :o
LOL . I know. In fact I thought your choice of words pretty eloquent. But for our TPU friends whose English isnt so strong, I thought a translation to the vernacular would assist.

That is true also... But, at lease they are taking the fact that something might of happened... I mean, a few is better then EVERYONE having that problem, and they say," Oh, well we didn't have this happen in our tests".
