24" 1440P 60Hz (OC to 75Hz) vs 24" 1080P 144Hz

As my system specs indicate, I run a triple 1080P setup at the moment. However, I am building a custom rig for simracing where these 3 monitors will be placed and will stay there fixed.

I need another (4th) screen for general work/other gaming stuff. Price limit is 250EUR and I have these two options:

1) 24" Dell P2416D, 1440P 60Hz (OC possible to 75Hz by the looks of things)

I am leaning towards the 1440P panel, however I am slightly worried about the response time.

75hz is not that much different from 60hz (I switch to 60 when i play fallout 4), if refresh rate matters to you, get the benq.

Eh, I'd pick resolution over refresh rate, but then again I never played fast shooters that much (maybe a little UT99 back in the days when I was in my twenties)

Im not gaming anything special in particular, but I do like things looking nice and smooth. When it comes to FPS, I currently play Siege, will get BF1 just because it looks great. Doom is on the list aswell. Then I also play games like War Thunder and World of Tanks.

Also, my job is alongside the PC, so I need it for work/learning purposes aswell. Only thing holding me back from that 1440P screen is the response time, I don't know if it should be a major deciding factor.

It is only that high because it is an IPS panel. IMO, 1440p IPS is way better than 1080 TN. Yes, 8ms seems high, but I've never had an issue with IPS monitors qhosting even with the high response times.

If competitive e-sports or fast-paced MMOFPS is not your main thing then neither 144Hz nor the response time should be much of a concern. For casual gameplays, a Freesync monitor might suit you better. There are many good 1080p "large screen" Freesync monitors with 144Hz, 1ms. If you want a 24" one then have a look at the AOC 2460PF or LG 24GM79. The DELL SE2717H is a 27" IPS monitor with Freesync (75Hz). All these are within your budget. Just my 2 cents.

Seems that a lot of people actually prefer 1440p with 60 Hz and overclockable to 75.
I still stick with 1080p @144Hz though, it's just more suitable for me.

I dunno if you're sticking to 24" I would go high refresh 1080p. I think 1440 has to be 27" or better to make sense.

For serious gamers or shooter players a high Hz monitor, non IPS, is preferable. Reaction times etc. much better giving you an edge at gaming which can't be dismissed by pretty much irrelevant picture quality. 1080p has easily more than enough picture quality, yes even TN.

It has enough quality for those who need to game like that...they arent looking for quality. Otherwise, IPS over TN hands down. Ill never go back to a non ips panel if i can help it.

Those two monitors I posted are the only ones (in the whole country, -.-) that have the specs that they have. I might consider a 27, I just need to check on prices.

Freesync isnt a thing for me since I run an nVidia GPU and dont plan on changing it soon.

The only serious competitive gaming I do is sim racing, everything else can (and should be) considered casual.

I'm not sure if we are discussing Response Time (GTG) or Refresh Rate (Hz) but I will throw my 2 cents in anyway. I run a 1440p PLS 5 ms monitor (PLS is the Samsung tech equivalent of LG IPS tech) that I use strictly for gaming and I don't notice any ghosting. I can't go back to 1080p and TN panels after this monitor.

Discussing both, 1080P has superior response time (GTG of 1ms vs 6ms) and superior refresh rate (144Hz vs 60Hz)...but its 1080P

I have the 590 PL 24" PLS, love it more then my old lg IPS

Oh interesting. To see PLS panel from Samsung actually provided this sort of performance, I'm really impressed.

the push for more pretties (1440 or 4K resolutions) dont exactly sit well with the push for high refresh rates linked to high frame rates does it.. he he

one thing is for sure you cant prioritize both.. you take your pick and go one way or the other..

i had a 1080 24 inch 144 hrz TN gaming panel.. for gaming it was fine but i changed it for an ips panel because none of my photo collection looked right and the viewing angles were crap.. my gaming and good colour plus good viewing angle ips panel did not come cheap though..

The rift is on the list, but I want a direct drive wheel first. Also rift requires good eye sight (i am short sighted) so thats one issue I must sort out first. I cant stand contact lenses.

Well, since you have an nvidia card, any sync would be way costly. So I guess you're gonna have to get a 144Hz monitor for smooth gameplay. Again, 1440p with 144Hz would be too costly, so I suggest you look for a 1080p 144Hz monitor. That;s not gonna be hard to find, and may be cheaper without the sync stuff. TN panel will give you the fastest response times, low input lag and will be the cheapest. IPS will surely give better colours, but may compromise on the "speed" bit. At 1080p in a 24" panel, the lower colour gamut of a TN may not be too bothersome if mostly you just game. These can vary from monitor to monitor by a great deal, so I'd suggest you read some reviews regarding the viewing angle and ghosting etc. Of course, if you don't have too many to choose from then you don't have much of a choice anyway. But do a thorough search - particularly the e-tailers' offerings through Amazon, eBay etc. You just may find something good.

Just watch out for frame skipping. OC'd panels may suffer from this.
