its all part of the added cost.. buying from a private seller isnt quite the same as buying from a normal retailer..

Hey guys I know this is probably a stupid idea to most of you guys but I’m looking to buy a 3080 on eBay and willing to pay scalper prices at this point prices will never get better and neither will stocks my only issue is that I’m scared I’ll get scammed and I never bought anything from eBay do you guys think eBay is a safe place to buy from ?

It isn't high, but it's not unheard of either. Not to sound like a tired record, but I remind you, EVGA even warranty's open box items from manufacture date, so if you go with that brand you are pretty much covered. Also they accept warranty registrations from random sellers sealed ebay items (speaking from experience).

They do command a smallish premium though. Nothing like the scalper upmarking but... definently a premium above anything their build quality (which tends to be average to above average, but nothing special for the most part) calls for. It's all about the coverage with that brand.

EVGA will warranty an ebay scalper buy provided it's sealed (a used or opened one gets a transferable 2 year from manufacture date instead). But really, hop on the EVGA queue. I can't say this enough. MSRP is already as much as anyone should pay.

And don't count on the EVGA policy everywhere. Most want a "legit retailer" for warranty. It complicates things.

I waited for (on and off obviously) 4 days outside of a microcenter for my 3080, worth it? Probably not, but better than a lot of the methods outside of a bestbuy drop

If OP is willing to pay scalper prices, buy a pre-made PC instead. I got a EVGA 3080 FTW3 from buying an ABS PC for $2600. Then at least you also get the other stuff too.

Whatever gets you one is totally fine. Just sharing a "sit and wait" means I know works... eventually.

I'm lucky that I bought my 2080 SUPER back in March 2020 as a "stopgap" product until the 30xx series came out, but which has now become my permanent card until this price and availability problem goes away. Otherwise, I'd have been stuck with my old GTX 780 Ti.

So you're gonna run the significant risk of getting scammed because of that? It's your call, but I wouldn't do it.

If you're that desperate to upgrade now, then perhaps look to get a used card from friends you know and trust, or maybe the trading forum here on TPU. Read the rules and all the stickies carefully before trading there, though.

Finally, I see you've got your system specs in your siggy. May I suggest putting them in your profile as that's the official place for them and people can help you better as you can put more detail there. No biggie if you'd rather not, though.

people telling you that using ebay to buy a 3xxx series gpu carries a significant risk of you getting scammed are telling you total rubbish.. they are just making it up .. use ebay and pay the going ebay rate in perfect safety.. ebay is quite reliable..

having said that people are gonna believe what they want to believe and spout whatever nonsense they want to spout.. i am out of this one..

It's not the same but it depends, i bought my 3080 from a private seller, the GPU was brand new ( not opened ) and i got it with the original Invoice/receipt, that said i have full warranty in case something happens.
Of course because i am not that fool i bought it from ( Ebay kleinanzeigen ) it is a service like Craigslist.

GPU market won't easily turn back to normal, as it's deviated to the value of Indian Rupees or Turkish Liras... aka one side gauged up to hell and forth. Your thinking was frankly, heavily flawed as you had no basis of knowing when it could turn back to normal, and selling the card left you without anything.

Just because there are certain protections built into eBay doesn't stop scammers, especially the type of people who are looking to make a fast buck like this. Buyer beware.
