Damn i had the same problem wit XP and sata disk,

Did solve it but trying to remeber how......:banghead:

Something had to be changed in BIOS.

As i remember,

In IDE configuration screen, you have to set

Enhanced mode support to S-ATA

and Configure S-ATA as RAID to NO

So is it in my rig, with windows XP SP3 and a Western digital raptor 10.000rpm S-ATA disk drive.

well the mode is set properly etc, but for Bios bootup, it detects those drives as SCSI and there is no option of SATA, i guess reason it comes up as SCSI is the Fact of RAID, beyond that lets get back to topic, sorry for the Hijack.

Yes it is a BIOS setting.
I have never had my systems tell me my SATA is SCSI.

Anyway, good to see there are people still on AGP.

I just plopped a Sapphire HD3850 into my machine!
I left behind an Nvidia 6800.
I have 5 inquiries.

My Specs:
Athlon 3000+@2.03, 512 + (256x2) = 1gb of unmatching ram, Asus A8V-X board. IDE133 HD (1)(Does not being a SATA HD affect game performance?)

With a super FPS config at 640x480 in COD4 I get 60-160 ~75-100 consistantly FPS.

(2)I'm wondering how big a difference 2gb of CL3 Kingston will make over the current ram on my FPS((3)Can I run this newfangled 500mhz DDR1? (3a)Is it much better?). (4)I'm also wondering how much a 4000+ as opposed to a 3000+CPU would make in FPS difference. (5)Finally, a 939socket Athlon x2...

I guess it would help if I posted a benchmark score of some kind. I'll get on that.
OH, and I OC RivaTuner 1026 / 810

Thanks, I look forward to your responses.

1:-No difference in gaming between IDE 133 and SATA I and II.

2:-Having 2GB in dual channel will make gaming alot smoother and you will notice more responsiveness in windows.

3:-If your motherboard allows to be set to DDR500 in BIOS it will cope with it.
If you board is like my old ABIT AV8-3rd eye then it should be able to use DDR500 RAM to its full potential although DDR is very expensive.
3a:-Over DDR400 no.

4:-A 4000+ will make decent difference over your 3000+ and overclock hard.
Many people have reach 3.0Ghz on those CPUs.

5:-X2?
Well two cores are better than one although alot of games still only use one core.
But in saying this the other core will be taking care of the other things in the background.

Only thing is 939skt CPUs are very expensive still for what they are.

Also you may want to get an Opty as they are generally better overclockers due to higher temperature threshold.

If you get a X2 3800+ you should be able to get decent overclocks of 2.9Ghz
The X2 4xxx+ series wern't as good overclockers like mine for example.
Needs alot of voltage to keep stable.

AGP is deader than a door nail, ill admit that myself.

Not quiet, there are many people how still have a AGP based system, and a lot of manufacturers know this.

Making an HD3850 work on AGP costs not only time but money, and they would never do this if they where not sure if it would earn them a buck or two.

@ Innocent Criminal,

I remember a bios screen with two seperate halves, in one of the two halves my WD raptor was listed.

It was SCSI then, i switched it to the other side to the other halve and it became SATA.

Unfortunatly do not remember how i got there is a long time ago.:banghead:

@ blaznjason : 2gb of DDR500 is MUCH better than 1gb of DDR400, you will notice a difference, also what drivers and which version of rivatuner are you using?

thnx

Hi All,

First time posting here. I have an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, 2 GB DDR1 at 234 MHz (468 MHz DDR), Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4 GHz O/C 2.8 GHz and a new Powercolor HD3850 running at stock speeds 668/829. 3dMark06 scored 6750, over 3 times what my X800GTO scored when overclocked to 450/550.

hi and welcome to TPU!

could you share what drivers/OC tools you're using for your card so i can add it to the first post

thnx

edit : also anyone that has posted info and ive not added it can you kindly remind me so that i can add it to the first post :D

thats how my System, is Apparently XP doesnt detect SATA drives as SATA but as SCSI.

It's annoying a fuck! >.< It worked fine then after a reboot or two, I noticed I had a removable disk & that device manager was stating my 300GB Samsung was a SCSI drive.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look in my BIOS but I haven't seen any SATA options in the IDE section. I've got two RAID controllers, one VIA and one Promise. Apparently using the Promise controller I have the option to work in IDE mode. However my drive is still being detected in Windows as SCSI.

Anyroad, on topic - I benched my HD3850 at stock along with my GPU and I got 6795 - which about 1000 marks more than I did with my Shuttle. ^^

At 2.1GHz CPU I've got 7123 and at 2.2GHz I've got 7362. The best I got with my Shuttle was 9125 with my CPU at 2.7GHz with a slight OC on the 3850.

I know I'm expecting too much when I say this, but I'm hoping I can hit 10,000.

@ blaznjason,

If this is the board you mean,

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=68&l4=0&model=1119&modelmenu=2

Then the highest speed ram it will use is ddr400, the only option is to check if there is a bios update that makes it work on ddr500 but i doubt it.

So buying ddr500 is not the best thing to do, except if the prize is lower than ddr400 because it automaticly will run on ddr400 even if you stick ddr500 in the board.

When buying new memory be sure to check the QVL list on the Asus site to be sure it works dual channel, and is tested succesfully on youre board. It will run even smoother when the memory is in the QVL list.

@eidairaman1,

how big is youre fps drop when using big machine guns and smoke ?, in cod 4.

please dont spread falseness.

thats what OC'ing is for, set to DDR400 for 1:1 ratio and up the FSB, DDR333 and DDR266 are your dividers ;)

my board gives same DDR options for ram, i've ran from DDR400 (pc3200) to DDR533 (pc4200) in my rig without a hitch (except for the CPU not being able to go that high  )

my max 24/7 stable FSB is around 240-245 so i run DDR500 stix at 1:1 :D

Without overclocking, the Memory will run on DDR400, even if it is DDR500 you put into it.

And you cannot argue with that.

That overclocking makes it run faster, i know that.:rockout:

My cpu would have run faster but my memory could not catch up, after passing the 3,6 GHZ.

Was getting a little bit hot i think, even got a warning from it.

im not arguing at all and dont try to argue with me, but all previous gen MOBO's ran default mem speeds of DDR400 (200mhz bus) regardless you HAD to OC to run higher mem freq's. it's not like the new boards of today where you can have your RAM running faster than the bus, while still maintaining stock bus speed.

the Driver that is for my motherboard is detected as a SCSI and Raid Controller, thats how the P4S8X was when i had it, My Drives are Detected as SCSI- they work fine, in Windows XP they never had SATA Designation, im unsure if that passes on to Windows Vista.

I say dont worry about it unless if you cant access them.

Not arguing at all.
:respect:

But wat i said was not false, but is true if you do not consider OC'ING the system.

But enough off that.

Is his mainboard a next gen motherboard??, and from wich piont is it a next gen board.

I have a asus p4c800-e deluxe, but i dont think that's a new gen board right??.

I have read that the nehalem will not use FSB anymore like AMD does, does that mean it makes no difference how fast the memory is?.

AMD Doesnt use a FSB, At least the K8 CPUs and Higher DO not, they Use Hyper Transport Technology. Intel's Nehalem will be using QuickPath Interconnect which is like Hyper Transport Technology, which are both Point to Point System. And to your Question, No your Motherboard is not a Next Gen as Intel has moved onto LGA 775 (Socket T), DDR2, DDR3, and PCI Express, your motherboard is Skt 478 AGP, and DDR. My Motherboard is not Next gen as its SKT A (462) AGP, and DDR. AMD's Current Boards are SKT AM2+ PCI Express, DDR2, AMDs next boards will have DDR3.

I am running the 421.zip I guess beta?(8.5) drivers in RivaTuner it says 8.1 or newer cata drivers.

The OC settings I posted before were not accurate. Right now I am running COD4 stable at 767/950.

I don't have CCC installed. After using driver cleaner to uninstall all drivers I wasn't able to get the driver install to properly detect that I have a proper video card. I looked in the INF and there was a property matching my card's dev ID #s properly (HD 3850 AGP) so I didn't need to modify that.
I just went into device manager and specified the inf file for the drivers and it installed properly. I don't presently have anything installed other that the driver which is the latest one from the Sapphire site. 421.zip
