4870x2 Resolution out of Range Error

do what you did over again and LEAVE IT ALONE! :D seems like it is liking 59Hz so use that.

I uninstalled the drivers for my monitor and here is what CCC says now.

It won't switch back to looking fine and using 59Hz :(

This sucks.

I'm going to call it a night as my sanity has run out.

I will resurrect this thread tomorrow. I really appreciate all of the help so far.

Damnit. I unplugged everything but the HDMI connection to the monitor and the picture looked good when I started up. I checked the settings and it said it was set to 1920x1080 at 59Hz instead of the normal 60Hz it says when I'm connected via DVI. So being the idiot I am, I messed with it and changed it back to 60Hz. Now the picture is messed up looking and the color is messed up again. I switch back to 59Hz but this doesn't fix it.

...it seems like the issues just keep multiplying.

runn it in at 59Hz many HDTV's like that setting ...Use it if it works.

I have a BenQ 24 inch something or other. It's a 1920x1200 res monitor. Is yours set for that, cause I wonder if 1920x1080 isnt properly supported on your pc or something of that sort.

Another thought: Try disabling gpu scaling and let the monitor do it. Mine has a menu where I can adjust aspect ratio and such. Im not sure if I have that enabled or not. At work right now.

This sucks.

The reason that there are black bars around the images and odd colors with HDMI is that GPU scaling doesn't work correctly with HDMI. So anything that isn't at the native resolution will look screwed up.

Uninstalling the monitor drivers seems to have fixed the issue with CCC seeing the max refresh rate correctly. It now reports 75Hz, which is correct for you monitor, instead of the 85Hz it was reporting before.

Try switching back to DVI(I know it sucks, but just try it) and see what it does. Now that the max refresh rate is being reported correctly by the drivers, it shouldn't give you that out of range message anymore. And GPU scaling should also work now.

Well, the senior ATI tech that tried to help me was stumped. I updated him that I had tried HDMI and been able to run at 1920x1080 without the error, but the colors and contrast via HDMI were simply "off" and over-saturated. This is not an issue with the color settings. It is some kind of issue that the connection is causing. I have no idea what it is. Anyhow, I am experiencing underscanning when I run games via HDMI, but no underscanning when I'm using the benchmark utility. When I use the DVI connection, the refresh rate shows 60Hz, when I use HDMI it shows 59Hz. When I check "Information" in my monitor itself, it says 60Hz. When I use the BenQ monitor driver and use an HDMI connection the "Maximum reported refresh rate" in CCC says 85Hz. When I use an HDMI connection and the default Windows monitor driver, the "Maximum reported refresh rate" in CCC says 75Hz. When I use the DVI connection, the "Maximum reported refresh rate" in CCC says 85Hz no matter which driver I use.

Well 60Hz is always a safe setting so go with that imo.

I just got off of the phone with BenQ. We decided that I should try the monitor at 1920x1080 on a different machine, which I am going to do right now. They said that if the error happens with the other machine, I should send the monitor in for service. I'm not sure what to think about all of that. Anyhow, I'm going to try the other machine right now. I'll report back in 15 minutes or so.

If that's the issue you should get a replacement or rma. Service would take longer probably. A doa can be replaced quicker by the distributer

No sir only have had it for a day LOL I never bother overclocking video cards.

Don't oc that sapphire 4870x2. If I pushed 50Mhz on mine, it would go balls at shoot up to 110C playing crysis!!

Trust me I know they are bad overclockers. Really
There is no need to overclock this beast it's pointless it's already insane.

lol my first one was a beastly clocker til I killed it ]: oops
I haven't tried this one

also, mine did something similar to this IIRC and I just reinstalled drivers off Sapphire's disc.. which did fix it but then I guess I did RMA it anyway for above bork factor..

Lucky bastard lol!!.

EDIT: I just noticed we're getting off topic. Well i pretty much started it. :D

This is going to take longer than expected. My other machine has Windows XP on it so I have to install Vista in order to test DX10. So I'm doing that now.

Once again, I appreciate all the help guys. It's Friday afternoon and this problem is driving me nuts. I'm cracking open the Bushmills. Anyone else?

:-)

Vista is still installing on the other machine, but I think I'm going to have a problem. That machine only has a Radeon 9500. Is there anyway in hell it is going to run DX10? If not, I will be unable to replicate the environment in which my error is occurring on the original machine.

It won't run DX10, but it should at least be able to start up a few games to test.

The error is only happening in DX10. 1920x1080 is working in DX9. I guess this means that the problem isn't with the monitor?

My other machine doesn't meet the system requirements for Windows Vista. So testing my monitor with DX10 on another machine isn't going to be possible.

I need to regroup my thoughts and try to figure out what to do next.

Any more suggestions?

Seems like it very possible a bad card...rma:confused:

I have a feeling they would send me another card and it would do the exact same thing LOL.

I'm going to try another complete uninstall of all graphics/monitor drivers and software and then I'll report back.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall of the drivers and I'm still getting the error. The benchmarking utility that I'm using is acting strange too and I'm getting some artifacts. I'm going to install 3DMark Vantage right now and see what kind of results I get with it.
