Well Nvidia users have to lol, there is no alternative but to use third party software. That is the users that are tech savvy enough.

Starting with RivaTuner, this has always been serviced very well by 3rd parties. But it would still be nice to see Nvidia go the extra mile and provide 1st party support. Maybe this is just their way of keeping Unwinder in business ;)

Yeah, well, giving non tech savvy users the means to adjust fan curves and power profiles is like giving a 2 year old scissors and asking them no to run with it :D

yeah that is one thing I have liked about AMD drivers, i no longer need msi afterburner installed like the old days. not that i minded installing it, it was a good little program, but less is better.

You sure about that? Have you heard of geforce experience? You can record, oc your card, performance graphs, everything you need. And yes, it's made by nvidia not by a 3rd party.

geforce experience is a bloated mess. not to mention the data harvesting it does.

Yeah, I have a Nvidia card and even I didn't know GFE did that. But his point still stands: this functionality is offered by Nvidia directly. That it's offered as part of GFE and not directly in the CP, that's mostly splitting hairs.

i still recommend using msi afterburner if owning nvidia, simply because it is a good little program

In what way is it a bloated mess? It's pretty lightweight, much more responsive than amd's control panel. Also, what data is it harvesting?

Both Afterburner and EVGA Precision are still RivaTuner underneath. Iirc, Unwinder worked with EVGA first, until they screwed him. And then he jumped ship to MSI. He's doing a great job, he deserves to be paid for that. (Even if now, because of sanctions, he hit a rough patch again.)

there is a reason techpowerup hosts NvCleanInstall, I assure you geforce experience is more of the same, logic dictates it so. But we have no NVCleanGeforceInstall.

when I used geforce experience with my 1070 it just wasn't a smooth UI imo, i uninstalled it fairly quickly. amd's control is very snappy for me, not sure what you smoking on that one.

As an Nvidia user, having to use Afterburner to keep my 4080's power consumption lower annoys the heck out of me. One additional program that I shouldn't need to run. Afterburner can eat up to 3% background resources as well, you have to disable all the monitoring features if you want to keep it's resource usage low.

Might have a look at that. Does it allow OSD like afterburner too?

My card is MSI so it's party why i use AB. I always install Nvidia driver only, and use AB as i am not a fan of GFE

Affirmative, I just find it a little more simplistic, yeah I don't do the GFE thing, driver packs are big enough as it is these days without a sackload of bloat.

3%? What CPU do you have? For me it's always at 0% with 2.3mb of ram usage, lol

EG1. Ah nevermind, you have a 7800x3d, just checked your sig. Yeah well, 8 cores and background tasks, they don't go well together.

To be fair Aferburner is sitting at 8.5MB here right now, after 2.5 days of uptime. Usage is at 0-0.2% though. Still, I can afford both.

if you're going to keep it for a long time, and are going to stay at 1440P for the most part then the 7900xt, it will age way better.

if you're going to push 4K and get the 5070ti as soon as it's out then the 4070ti as it will give you a better 4k experience w/dlss on.

Thanks for all the input. I was just about to grab an XFX 7900 XT for $789.99 but I decided to do one last search and found an Open Box - Excellent 4070 Ti at Best Buy for $687.99. Can’t resist a deal. I’ve already bought plenty of open box cards without issue over the years, even a Gigabyte 4070 non Ti for another build that’s humming along flawlessly. We’ll see how it goes when it arrives. I wasn’t enthused about Starfield after watching more videos anyway so that freebie doesn’t effect me. I’m sure I’ll be getting a different card next year as well since I’m back in the hobby of building and selling.

I thought so. If it’s not enough of a jump for the price compared to the 4070 build, I’ll just throw it on eBay or Marketplace for just over my cost. The 4070 Non Ti is regularly popping up Open Box for $479.99. Or just take it back within the return period . That’s the good thing with Best Buy.

Do you care about RT? Then NVIDIA.
Otherwise, AMD is cheaper with higher rasterisation performance.

But if you can get one or the other on some sort of discount, that's always the smartest play. Open box, Amazon Warehouse, etc.
