If i were to get a 8800GT ($200), I would spend couple bucks more and get the GTS ($220 after MIR).

But then, I would ask myself is it worth the extra cost for my current rig.

8800 GS Powa :D:D:D
Good OC possible ( 720/2000/1728 ) and not a lot temp more ( max 57°C full, 400C idle ).
EVGA version add some 1.0ns memory chips ( starting 1GHz easy ;) ).

I play on all my games @ 1680X1050 without problem ( Crysis exept ... not tested ).

9600GT is a good choice two, with a full effective core ( not a catrated one as the 8800GS ).
The 8800 GT is the best choice ... but in 512MB version :D

How about this, order both the 8800gs and the 9600gt. Do a comparative thread about which one is faster at max oc (similar to another thread comparing 3870 and 9600gt on this forum) and then return the slower card. You will be out the restocking fee, but hey, then you and everyone here will have some better idea.

I'll tell you what though, I think its looking like the 9600gt is going to give the 3870 a run for its money, so......

I don't care if the 8800 GT has only 256 mb, look at any benchmark the 8800 GT is the faster card whether 256 mb or 512 mb. Try to scrape a little bit more money for a 512 mb version of the 8800 that way you won't live with regrets. The 9600 GT is an excellent choice if you can get it significantly cheaper than the 8800 GT, the 8800 GS should be disqualified.

Maybe not, but the difference between them is so little it seems like it could be overtaken with some oc.

I just looked at the review and as impressive as it is I didn't see any over clocked version of the 9600 GT beating the 8800 GT

I agree the 9600 GT is only worthy against an 8800 GT if over clocked, probably equivalent but not better.

Edit: It appears they don't like hot linking images, so I put the original URL

yeah sure the oc 9600GT mite par or even beat the 8800GT on occasion, but you have to do apples to apples, i.e., you must test stock vs stock or oc vs oc, in which case the 9600GT never surpasses the 8800GT.

True true, but I was making this point as a point for buying the 9600gt instead of the 256mb gt or the 8800gs, b/c I don't think either of them can catch the 8800gt on stock.

yes true the 9600GT will catch a stock 256mb 8800GT as you start to crank the res and AA + AF, which imo makes it a hard decision, do you go with memory castrated or shader castrated?

So to conclude:

1.) either save up for a 512mb 8800 GT
2.) save your money and get a 9600 GT if your willing to OC to the 8800 GT's speeds.

Lets leave this thread alone guys. We have drilled the message home already.

The superclock has 1900mhz DDR3, and a 650MHZ GPU.

I am now considering the 8800gs based on W1zzard's review on it.

edit: nm, the 384mb does suffer at 1680x1050

don't forget the 8800gs outperformed the 9600gt in selective games at 1920x resolution, basically it depends on the gaming engine some require to transfer more texture data at higher resolution than others which means more memory.

I like the Galaxy 8800GS but it's only available in Europe :( it has 0.8ns Samsung memory, HDMI Port, Non-Ref PCB and a quiet Cooler Master Heatsink.

According to Expreview, the 9600GT is more or less the same performance to the 8800GS with 768MB of memory. And the 768MB is 15% faster then the 384mb when talking about lower than 30FPS. And the 8800GS 768MB was not faster at the higher res compared to the 9600GT (only up till 1280x1024 w/o any AA).

wolf,
Afaik, Palit is the only that offers a 768MB 8800GS.
Here in Euroland dozens of retailers have them in stock.

Well I have decided, I am going for the MSI N9600GT OC. It's has additonal $10 off, comes with witcher, and with a good factory upgraded cooler. And the reviews on this card is great.

Guess what, I cannot have a dual slot cooler which is as long as the card. It blocks my sata ports then.

I could take the plastic out of the MSI, but the plastic is joined to the heatsink.
