Accelero Xtreme GTX 280 mini review and support

I'm hoping improving the cooling I can get my GTX 285 clocks back up and reduce the core temps considerably.

Its all ordered, got the scythe kit coming, just got to work out the best way of drilling the holes for extra mounting holes on the NVIO as I dont have a dremmel

use thermal epoxy.

I dont want anything permanent :ohwell:

Yep, non-permanent is nice. Either drill one hole much closer, or move both holes closer. Which ever leaves you to do less modifications on top (of the heatsink).

edit: Ah. Too high. Might work under the Thermalright though.

That was the first sink I though of using with Accelero, before it was released. Didn't know then that it was too high, but it would also need quite a lot of modification to get the mounting feet to fit.

Just noticed that was the new GTX 285 version:

GTX 260/280 version is only 10cm high and would fit nicely (with lots of dremeling around core area).

Although, you could cut the VRM head and NVIO head off and use just those, but that leaves just thermal epoxy as mounting solution (memory parts would work with thermal tape too). Unless you're super handy and drill mounting holes with threads to the sink. edit: it already has holes for use with original screws :-o "Before putting the stock back plate in place, fasten the two small screws in the I/O chip area as shown above, and only then fasten the back plate in place with the stock screws."

all you gotta do is mix in a equal amt of compound into the epoxy to make a semi permanent bond, thats what i did with some Tweakmonster Ramsinks applied to a MR 9800 256 which in turn i overclocked the hell out of it aka 350/297 OC to 459/416.

Nice job, kinda shows you had a great template to work on :p Why reinvent wheel, I can't think of anyway to improve the sink job TuxBrothers and you did.

But wasn't AC nice to make the ramsinks that big, that it's almost perfect for GTX 285 VRMs ;)

This is a diagram from Thermalright on how to install the Thermalright heatsink kit on a 260 gtx 55nm 216 core video card. On the red blocked areas I used the Thermalright heatsink kit and the green blocked areas I used the heatsinks provided by Arctic Cooler. Hope this helps.

P.S the 285 gtx VRM heatsink used by Thermalright will actually work as a NVIO heatsink , the adhesive provided by Thermalright is pretty strong, I used the Arctic cooler simply for ease of use but I did test the Thermalright VRM heatsink as a Nvio heatsink ( I marked it with a red x) but it would work. I finally had a chance to put in a decent amount of time and get one of my cards wrapped up. I took a Dremel to some of the fins and they cleared the caps quite nicely. Now I just need to swap this card with my other 275 and give next card a cooling makeover.

Yep, I saw it (I do read all posts in this thread :p). Just wanted a picture of the card with the sinks, like the others are, would look strange to have a PDF page in the middle :)

Well, there aren't anyone else with 55nm 260, so think I'll make a link for it in post #270 (edit:added) until someone provides a picture. I'm not asking you to take it a part just to take one :) That'll still help, if someone needs it.

Did you try the first card on the second slot if it fits, or left it as a surprise for the second makeover ?) Oh and if you remember, take a picture of the cooler dremeling when you do the second card. I'd add that too in post 270 to help others.

Considering I went from 89-90C to 53-56C and I know my VRM is cooled better, yes.
An extra $10 for the Scythe 1000's? Yes...

Now the copperheat sink, I kinda regret, just because it was an extra $20. I wish I would have cut the NVIO sink that comes with the Accelero and dremeled in new holes to fit the NVIO.

Doing things like this challenges you and reminds you of why it's better to build than to buy a Dell.
 
Wow, OCCT might push the accelero to its limits, but gaming has yielded a 25*C decrease! :eek:

Yeah that is just insane, it acctually shuts down a 4870 at stock settings and requires a hard reboot. It makes furmark look like a 2d app, but the error detection is great.

Well my OC on my graphics card is 1hr OCCt stable passing with no errors at 26*C ambient. :D

Accelero made no difference to clocks only temps, makes me think maybe the GTX 285 under occt pushes out more than 250w of heat (the TDP of the accelero) lol

It's for a different reason, the OCP on the refrence 4870/90s is set a bit too low. No other program will touch that though. The HR-03 made no difference with my clocks either, but temps on the other hand it made a big difference there.

Yep, I hope no-one breaks their GTX 280 with those instructions. Already invited future Thermalright owners on this thread for some help, they'll need same sink advise as with Accelero.

Doesn't stock any EnzoTechs. Sorry I don't know either where to get the, at least with cheap postage. Germany has plenty stores with them, but postage will be twice the price of the sinks. None in Finland either, hence my stock cooler chopping.

Rather than linking back, i thought id post my Accelero stuff here:

After having had games crashing on me, I decided to stability test my once stable GPU OC. I had to down clock to make them stable again, even then, with my fan profile to keep the card under 70*C, the fan was hitting 100% in most games released in the last 2 years. So i decided enough was enough, and with some inspiration from here and following TuxBrothers great setup there, I bought myself an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme GTX 280 and a Scythe VGA Chip Heatsink kit to make up for the inadequate sinks provided with the AC. Temps so far have proven to be 7*C cooler, but to be fair its 25*C in my room, which is 2*C up from when the leaf blower was on last night. The main benefit tho is the noise, despite the stock cooler not suffering a whining fan, 3200rpm creates a lot of turbulenance noise and is not nice when creeping around jungles, etc. As neither the scythe kit, nor the AC were properly designed for the GTX 285, I have had to make some modifications, which I've listed below. On from that are the pictures of course, which I will let do the rest of the talking.

Mods:
  • Remove GPU brace
  • Cut NVIO sink to square, drill new holes, fit push pins from scythe NVIO sink
  • Cut AC memory sink to length of main VRM area
  • Trim off-cut from above to cover remainder of VRM area
  • Bend fins to fit over S-video port

The stock cooler remains usable after that if you cut the VRM cooler part out nicely. Warranty not so much, but will they really take the stock cooler off too, if the card just doesn't work ?)

Yeah, should be on first page, but it is bolted on with stock screws through the stock backplate and has Noctua NT-H1 paste between it and VRMs.

I'm not using the stock backplate actually. I have the blue zalman things.
But it should work anyway.
