Bloody hell, i'm at 29 hours of gameplay and i made a first mistake (and death) after like 20 hours of not dying a single time. I was evading a security guard, camping around a ceiling vent when alien pretty much dropped down out of the blue. I did hear it crawling somewhere above before but the noise didn't quite followed it. Despite some box being there, i was too far away. Auch. Didn't even have the time to prime the flamethrower.

LOL, you profess to be able to write survival guides on the game and don't even know well enough not to camp under vents?

Besides, guides are only good for general rule of thumb tactics that most early on in the game can figure out. There's often no predicting what the alien will do, or where it is, as you just exampled.

Most know to steer clear of ceiling vents though.

I did too and it was't directly under, just 2m away. It was hilarious, because 5 seconds before, i was just thinking it would be smart to at least move behind a nearby box...

At a certain point of depth the game introduces camping aliens. They are signified by hearing them "hiss" in the vent with a steadily dripping noise of their saliva. If at in point you go directly underneath these camping aliens they will snatch and instant kill ya.

Yeah, that happens around at the end of the first visit of the Scimed Towers. I had two more events with serious brown pants effect. First was when i was sneaking back from some room through a corridor with no escape route and i could hear alien and i was like plz don't go into my hallway and damn fucker did. So i was slowly fighting it off with flamethrower while backing off hoping for it to retreat. And then it jumped me. I thought oh well, i'm a gonner. And then i pick myself up in slow animation and i was still alive, with a bit less health but still. Then i went into a vent and same thing, hoping not to drop on me and it did just on the opposite end of the damn vent. Flamethrower was singing again, but luckily i fight it off just in time to escape. While i don't rely on flamethrower, it's sometimes a life saver when things really go to shits.

And today i used the noisemaker for the first time to distract the bloody maintenance Joe (those tougher anti EMP/shock fuckers) because there was no way to go around him. Didn't want to provoke alien by shooting the Joe with shotgun in the face so i sent him with a Noisemaker to an opposite corridor far away from me. And it worked hehe. Even if alien got provoked, i could sneak away safely for sure.

Anyway, i really like the feel of the game. It's still really tense but not too punishing which is usually a difficult to balance out. But they sort of did it here. Or maybe because of the way how i play it, with minimal alien contact if possibel and only use flamethrower for really tight situations. In theory you could flame the fucker every time it jumps down from the vents. With proper usage you would have plenty of fuel for the flamer. But i don't like that kind of play.

Ok, finished the game today after 32 hours of hell on Sevastopol station. And holy shit this game was an awesome unfrogettable experience. It has it's tiny flaws but Creative Assembly pulled it off. In my opionion the best game of 2014, hands down. And they left the ending open, so we can expect Alien: Isolation 2... And i want it. I wish more developers had so much balls to create such unique and amazing experiences. System Shock 2 and Deus Ex hold special place in my heart and this Alien game also got the right to be there.

Some have suggested that hiss might be their use of sonar (like bats) to locate you. More so in the lore of the Alien universe than in the game I mean.

You have to wonder if Creative Assembly took things like that into account though, as a warning that if you're near and hear a hiss, it might attack even if it doesn't "see" you.

Never happened to me on hard, then again I was crouched 95% of the time.

Well, I just scored this game for free today!!! A friend of mine picked up the game and ended up with two copies so he gave me one of them. :peace: Yea, I couldn't believe it myself. He asked me; "hey man, got a couple of copies of Alien: Isolation and I only need one, you want the other?" Shit, I asked how much and he responded that he would just give it to me. :p

So...............I am going to be firing this puppy up tonight later. I already downloaded the game on Steam and realllllllllllllllllllllly looking forward to playing this game.

Not sure. I've beat it before they could toss patches out and haven't ran it since.

I love the idea of only ONE alien
It turns out they lied about the one alien if you've already played it =P Don't know if that's classed as a spoiler or not...

Spoiler on the Alien's AI and pathing mechanics:
The idea of the Alien off doing it's own thing and you encountering it randomly is novel, but not how it actually happens. It's far too scripted and obvious.

I love the peek mechanic, think that could be used in so many other games, and the little point of view features, like auto lying down when there's a crawl space under a desk. Graphics are awesome too, the environment is done up really well - shit is more scary than the Alien.
Though the androids are a let down, they just look masked serial rapists - I was expecting something more human.

Unfortunately it's already become a bit tiresome, because as others mentioned you just crouch everywhere and avoid some obvious traps. And I call bullshit that the alien can fit in some of those vents.

^The AI isn't overly scripted. It only has scripted appearances in a few places. Beyond that it's behavior is subject to what it perceives.

LOL at the watch out for "tarps" typo. Corpses in body bags laying on a tarp are a bad omen I guess.

The only times I 'run into' the Alien are after certain sequences /story parts of the game, and at that point you can clearly hear it moving around. There was one location where even crouched, as soon as I got to a doorway, it would come near. I reloaded the save over and over and attempted sitting just before the door for up to half an hour and it never came at me. As soon as I got near the door it was coming my way.

I also had another scenario where I would have to wait for an android to turn his back, in order to pass him. Every time he turned and I crouched past, the Alien got me through the ceiling (not even a vent). If the Android saw me, but I stayed crouched and took the same path any ways, the alien didn't attack...

It doesn't seem to attack the androids either sadly....that would make for some interesting moments as the android is going for your throat and out it's chest comes a piece of tail. Maybe it happens later in the game?.

It's a good game, amazing graphics and optimisation...best of both I've seen in a game actually.
Excited for you mate, I remember how thrilled I was when Steam notified me: "Alien: Isolation has finished downloading". First night I clocked in almost five hours I think =P Just gotta re-run at some point to get the last ten achievements or so.

Unfortunately that isn't the case - the androids remain unscathed by the Alien throughout the whole game...sorry to burst your bubble!
Nothing in this world is perfect, and that includes games ;) Every game is bound to miss some detail that would have made it better.
