AMD Comfortable with Current GPU Pricing, No Cuts in Sight

I'm one of those that put $ to $ in the piggy-bank, waiting for them prices to go down. However, my 4850 seems OK for now. I think of skipping this entire gen of GPU/CPUs... Well, maybe if Bioware would put out some amazing RPG that won't work at 1680x1050 on my 4850, then I'll buy something.
But AMD, you sons o' bitc**s... put the 5850 on the cheepo level, please. 200$ will just do.

I reckon once the GTX4XX series have been out for a bit, a 5850 will come down significantly and be very affordable. It'll give a massive boost from your 4850 and you get DX11 too.

I wonder if this information softens the blow on Fermi's expectations tomorrow. Time will tell.

No price drops for them indeed.. ATI's graphics cards doesnt have any direct competition.

Wow Sounds just like a fanboy. What do you mean no direct competition ?
What nvidia no longer makes video cards ? Of course there is direct competition for ATI . nvidia cards have been more than comp they have DOMINATED ATI for a long time . Not to say ATI isn't a great card but come on . There is tons of competition for ATI and nvidia has brought it out MANY times too . I still have the GTX260 and it rocks ! I also had the coveted HD4870 that crapped out the other day and well I think I only used that card 2 times and I found it less than desirable and from that one aspect of the video card heating up and then up and dieing makes me rethink ever buying an ATI card again . BTW this is not the only time ATI have done this to me and well I had the X1900 that was OVER heating and died on me as well . To say that ATI has no competition is just wrong .
I can understand people liking there brand and all I just don't see the reason to say ATI has no comp. They sure do if they want ME back ATI has GOT TO GET THIS HEAT ISSUES FIXED WITH ALL THERE CARDS ! Say what you want to say but this sucked ass the other day when I went to install the HD4807 1gb card and NOTHING HAPPENED NO post no video nothing till I put in the comp card and all was well once again . Now I have ranted long enough . I would love to get my hands on a 5770 or a 5870 just got BURNED once again by ATI and I just can not afford to RISK it any more . So here is the competition , ME ! That is were the competition is , Not with you or the ones that have there stuff but for them that do not . And the real test of performance is not in a benchmark it is in the quality and longevity of ones product . Maybe if they want me back so bad they would GIVE a card to test for the next 2 years ? I do not trust ATI any more sorry but after the other day I am NVIDIA ALL THE WAY . WOW now I sounds like a fan boy . :D

LoL, NV 8800 cards and a lot of 200 cards are dropping like fies, BFG have left Europe because they were losing so much cash dealing with so many RMA's, NV quality control has hit the shitter.

ATI's is no better ! :banghead: :nutkick:

Did you even look at his system?

... I just don't see the reason to say ATI has no comp.
If the price & performance of Fermi are true to the rumours, then ATI has no competition when it comes to price-vs-performance (DX11 parts). You know this is what he meant. Calm down.

CAPS LOCK RAGE FTW!

Lol has one bad experience and now scarred for like LMAO, grow up, you seem like angry twelve year old.

CRUISE CONTROL TO COOL MAN I SWEAR

this completly removes my little thoughs of upgrading

WOW, and youre going to buy a Fermi based card?

@op:
I remember hearing similar from ATI in the past when Nvidia had cards that couldnt compete (97/800 pro vs FX58/900) however, once the TWIMTBP hurf blurf campaign really kicked in, so many people were convinced/fooled the Nvidia cards were better that ATI had to drop prices

ONE ? no there have been more 2 that I can remember  .
Never the less to say that there is no competition is just dumb ! I am waiting and have been waiting for a good product to come out of ATI for a very long time .
I AM stating a fact that when you say ATI has no competition you are wrong as well stated earlier ATI has competition that is ME ! How do they win ME over is the true test of ones competition . :banghead:

No just an angry 43 year old that was burned more than once .
And NO I am sticking with my GTX260 as this card is just fine and runs every thing perfectly .

I remember the time when ATI fanboys were explaining how ATI/AMD is consumer friendly. That they were selling hardware to consumers at lowest prices they could. Yea that is true when they don`t have competitive hardware. Now the consumers we could go f*** our selves. Because ATI has no competition. If AMD had the fastest CPU you could bet your asses that amd would charge 1000$ for it.

err, dude, they have, for over 6 months

+1 . But I still see ATI as some one that needs to win ME over that is were the competition is . And how about the underhanded deal they did to nvidia ? Physx when nvidia bought them out ATI said we will not allow physx on our cards making physx useless ! Sounds like great competition there now don't it ? :banghead:

Ehm, AMD really doesnt have very high gains in terms of profit, the 2nd quarter after HD4xxx 1 million bucks in profit.

does it seem that they are "overpricing their cards"

30% bigger die size makes overall price ~10% higher, so... 2300 nok for the 4870 2900 NOK for the 5870.

Thats a 26 % increase in price over pre gen, which had a 256 mm^2 die, now 334 mm^2

It isnt as bad as you guys say it is, surely, prices havnt dropped as fast as the 4 series did, but soon, i hope cause i want my CF!

Yeah I came in here to say I thought this would happen damnit but now I'm leaving quick as it's (unsurprisingly) degenerated into a fanboy circle jerk.

That is not a true representation of the facts.

Nvidia wasnt going to give ATI access to Physx for free. ATI would have to pay licencing fees to Nvidia to have it on their cards. SO ATI would have to pay for something on every card that ATI make for generations AND Nvidia is the proprietary owner and could change/control the specs whenever they felt like it.

Nvidia could increase the reliance on Physx to a point that make it a necessity to run games, then raise the licencing fees to whatever they want, whenever they want.

Does that sound like a good deal for ATI? Is it a good idea for shareholders of AMD stocks?

If you think Nvidia was handing out their Physx tech for free out of the goodness of their hearts you dont understand the situation.

Nvidia is in a similar boat as AMD at the 58XX launch where there was only about 20,000 58XX cards at launch, Nvidia only has 50,000 GTX4XX cards at launch, so AMD dosen't really have to do anything, but nvidia actually has more cards than AMD had at launch.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...ble-in-higher-volume-than-radeon-hd-5800.aspx

But they delayed the launch by weeks, was supposed to be March 26th. So how does that affect things? If you want to compare more equally Nvidia has no cards on market at the original launch date while AMD had 20,000. I'm sure if AMD delayed by 2 weeks they could have had more numbers too.

this isnt news. I've been saying it for months now nobody listened is all.

Well if this news is anything near the truth, there go my golden hopes of scooping up a 5800 series card at a reduced price point early next month. I'm in desperate need to upgrade as well. :(

They don't see any price cuts cause there there is no comp.
The cards are worth the money.
The prices will eventually drop even if its a month after launch.
I don't know why ppl are expecting them to cut and run... they did there homework this time. So much so that I'm sure nvidia was surprised. They are usually 40% faster or something upon announcement, but they are close to the same even with "planed delays" after ATI showed its hand, which I'm sure surprised allot of ppl too.
I hope no one saw Nvidia's extreme tessellation videos and thought "wow ATI is gonna be 50 dollars less now!!!! lol not. The first price cuts wont even be 20 dollars in 3 months so you had to wait anyway.
Even if they wanted to cut them. They aren't gonna tell you a date to your face that would slow sales.
The cards are worth what there priced at now, the non reference versions are coming if not here already... the makers will fight it out, and im sure they don't think they have too.
Please don't act like u were born yesterday, there should be nothing surprising about this post.

Now here is someone that actually have some common sense :toast:

Not only does it seem that no cuts are in sight, but prices appear to be hiking up for the entire 5xxx range!

At first I thought it was only OcUK doing this. I couldn't compare the prices of other retailers since I only know the price I paid for my card from OcUK in February. I also thought p'haps the price hike affected only the 5970. But people started mentioning other 5xxx series which hiked in price, and not just OcUK but other retailers like Newegg. :/

Months ago didn't everyone think gtx480 would match or at least exceed 5970? 470 would beat 5870? Even given this scenario why would ATI slash prices on its current lineup?and since forever Nvidia would be charging 450-500$ 650-700$ for their two parts.

I'm comfortable with my current video card, so I can wait until the 5850 gets down around $250, where it should be.

They will come down, the question is how long will it take.
