Six weeks from now, the world will get the first retail Radeon X2900 XTX

Late yesterday DailyTech was briefed on the final details for the upcoming R600 retail specifications, just in time for everyone to go on vacation for Chinese New Year.

AMD's guidance claims R600 will feature 700 million transistors. By comparison, the Radeon X1900 series R580 GPU incorporated 384 million transistors into its design; the half-generation before that, R520, only featured 320 million.

As disclosed by DailyTech earlier this year, the GPU features a full 512-bit memory interface with support for GDDR3 and GDDR4. R580 was also similar in this regard as it supported GDDR3 and GDDR4.

On March 30, 2007, AMD will initially debut the R600 as the ATI Radeon X2900 XTX in two separate configurations: one for OEMs and another for retail. The OEM version is the full length 12" card that will appear in high-end systems.

ATI guidance claims the X2900 XTX retail card comes as a two-slot, 9.5" design with a vapor chamber cooler. Vapor chambers are already found on high-end CPU coolers, so it would be no surprise to see such cooling on a high-end GPU either. The OEM version of the card is a 12" layout and features a quiet fan cooler.

1GB of GDDR4 memory is the reference configuration for Radeon X2900 XTX. Memory on the reference X2900 XTX cards was supplied by Samsung.

Approximately one month later, the company will launch the GDDR3 version of the card. This card, dubbed the Radeon X2900 XT, features 512MB of GDDR3 and lower clock frequencies than the X2900 XTX. The X2900 XT is also one of the first Radeons to feature heatpipes on the reference design.

AMD anticipates the target driver for X2900 XT to be Catalyst 8.36. WHQL release of the X2900 XTX drive will appear around the Ides of March.

Radeon X2900 will feature native CrossFire support via an internal bridge interface -- there is no longer a need for the external cable found on the Radeon X1000 series CrossFire. There is no Master card, as was the case with other high-end CrossFire setups. Any Radeon X2900 can act as the Master card.

A much anticipated feature, native HDMI, will appear on all three versions of Radeon X2900.

One 6-pin and one 8-pin (2x4) VGA power connectors are featured on Radeon X2900, but both connectors are also backwards compatible with 6-pin power supply cables.

AMD claims the R600 target schedule will be a hard launch -- availability is expected to be immediate. Board partners will be able to demonstrate R600 at CeBIT 2007 (March 15 - 21), but the only available cards will be reference designs.

Why was there such discrepancy with the board layouts and designs up until now? An ATI insider, who wished to remain nameless, states "The original Quad-Stealth design is what we build the R600 on: GDDR4, full-length and dual-slot cooling. As the silicon further revised, [ATI] took up several alternative designs which eventually included GDDR3 and heatpipes into the specification. The release cards demonstrate the versatility of R600 in each of these unique setups."

Hah, compact vapor chamber (Heatpipes/TEC), w00t. So basically its like a motherboard, the extra 2 pins on the 8 pin are not needed; COOL I CAN KEEP MY PSU =D.

Is it just me, or does something seem very wrong with the power requirements of R600?

no it's not just you . reading the above post leaves me with ???? Too

Yes!
Chinese New Year = 利是Money:D :rockout:

power requirements seem a bit off

So can i buy the retail version to put in my rig? Or is that just for dells and such? and if I can will it be less powerful in any way (OEM = 9.5'' card)

NO, OEM means that they use the GPU for testing.

Retail version is just a more compact version, OEM isn't 9.5" wtf?!

My PC will run one of the X2900XTs one day...

I didn't see this story until now, but I have already posted this on the front page.

ATi have designed a brand new PSU for the R600.

Does seem a bit excessive dosent it! ;)

And nVidia is the one that actually builts it:p

(...) OEM = 9.5'' card
Yes the OEM card is just as long as retail XTX and XT (~8.5"), it's the OEM HSF that makes the difference as the fan is huge and protrudes several inches beyond the PCB.

200gb
250gb
4 dvd burners
400watt fsp psu
asus m2n-sli delus board
i copyed part of ashens rig when my 939 setup blew thanks to a faulty antech psu only ment to use the antech till i could get a better one but it died b4 i could replace it with a fortron.
ashen found that killer price on the m2n-sli delux from newegg(open box for under 1/2 retail price.....) the bios arent as good as his tf550 where(hes still waiting on RMA return, bitches about it at least once a week....hehe)

i like the asus board but have the same issues as ashen, its got querks that need worked out with bios still, as well as issues with drivers for xp/2k/2k3 stupid asus needs to update their drivers more.....

also remmber that those charts can be deceving, check out the kyro 2 vs gf2 gts review on toms hardware, the kyro 2 is more efficent, dosnt overdraw(due to rendering method used) and thus dosnt waist bandwith drawing stuff that dosnt get seen then removing it.

ati and nvidia bouth have been trying to hack a method to check z b4 rendeing, but neither have really perfected it, ati's method currently is better, but we duno if it will be in r600 or if nvidia will pull off something(not likely)

hyper-z dose have an effect and thus brings the card closer to its theoretical fill rates, this is important, because most imediat mode rendering cards dont even come close to their theoretical fill rate, where as defered mode rendering cards(kyr02) can acctualy hit their theoretical fill rates.

really somebody needs to buy powerVR tech rights and build a REAL POWERHOUSE card out of the tech, something cheaper to make then ati/nvidia cards, yet FASTER, and its quite possable, just nobody whos got the $ has tryed, hell i would even cheer ms or intel :wtf: if they went that rout and made a videocard/chip to counter the big 2.

once you start to understand how they caculate fullrates then you start to smell the rotten fish, if they went by REAL fullrates we would see FAR diffren numbers!!!

Yeah then we have motherboards for GPUS?

no, just would have a 3rd option for a decetent videocard, powerVR cards still have decent drivers for their age, i miss my card, thinking about getting one of the ones a buddy has and using it in an old axp setup i have, would be better then the gf2 gts that it has now :)

duno where u got the "mobos for gpus" thing, tho it would be intresting to see a videocard with a socket u could just swap chips out from.....humm, intresting....

What could you possibly need 4 DVD burners for? I mean sure, they're cheap, but why put FOUR into one computer?! When have you ever needed to burn/read 4 DVDs or CDs at the same time?!

Maybe he is one of those dudes who burns a crapload of burned games and sells it. I used to buy burned PS1 games from this one guy several years back, he had all these gadgets and a crapload of CD's everywhere. Had a huge library of games, I wonder if he got caught by the law....the guy stopped selling lol.
