the card needs the original reference board design though

Keep in mind, you need a BBA (Built By ATi) card to use this, or you will brick your card :banghead:

I'm going to try using the automated flash utility on my BBA 3870 now.

Swapping vendors is sketchy. See the screenshot I posted above. It says refer to FAQ before changing. I would take a look @ that.

If you read through the thread carefully, you would notice that the BIOS has already been uploaded:

The fan definitely ramps up quicker. Not quite quick enough for my liking, though. But then again, I'm pencil modding soon, and 100% is about the only way to go while doing that.

I opened that uploaded bios in Radeon Bios Editor, and the "already modified with RBE"(or similar) box was checked. I'd like to see a clean BIOS!

Probably not. Give me a GPU-Z Screenshot. These are specifically meant for the Built by ATi cards...

See the SubVendor? AFAIK, that means that this is Built by ATi, and was one of the first 3870s out the door.

My ASUS is one of the original cards, but when I try and flash this using Winflash I get the ID mismatch error. I had this problem before with the 3870 fanfix bios that was doing the rounds, got it flashed by forcing it with ATIFlash. That worked, but I ain't confident to do it again...

TBH, after tinkering with the fan settings using RBE it works quite well...

I wouldn't. Email Sapphire.

Why do you want to update anyway? Do you have the 862 bug, or do you want to change your fan speeds? You can fix the latter with RBE.

I did the automatic flash utility. Made it very painless. Not sure if it checks for compatibility, though...

I changed the fan speed with RBE, yes. I was just hoping that, with this new BIOS, i might be able to OC the card better ...

BIOSes don't help OCs. Your card can do what your card can do. Unless you have the first edition Built by ATi card that hard locks @ 862 core, you have no need for a new BIOS.
