Surprised, I had a Asus x1950pro and the HS/F definitely wasn't of that quality. Either way, the 2900's weren't 10.5's though.

It was the xtx versions that had the kick-ass cooler. I have to admit i replaced my x850xt with 2 1950xtx cards in crossfire partially for the fps, and partially because they looked so awesome

they can go and release a 50% increase chip now, it will be 50% faster and people will buy it. by the time nvidia hits back next year with a dx11 card ATI will be ready to release a card that is competitive or better than the gt300

This has gotta be the third of fourth time ATi fans are getting ramped up for an "ATi ftw" stretch.

Don't get me wrong they have to stay competitive, but... all I can say is, we shall see.

The information I have was on the ROP setup... from the way they have it setup, expect the minimum ROP layout to be 8. The better part being 32 (x2 with the X2 chip). The SPs are unchanged in layout from the looks of it.
8-8-8-8 is the layout I imagine they will use and just chop off 8 for each market segment they intend to engage in.

Thats not too bad of an idea, I just found it funny there was plain in sight paper in your drive bays, normally you hear people saying "clean up those wires" not "clean up those papers"

It sounds like you bought a pretty nice case though, but if you bought a nice small case, then I assume you seen it coming and expected not to be able to use X2 cards and even risking not being able to use the top single GPU cards, you seem like a knowledgeable guy, so thats why I assume that.

But like I said earlier, I don't think AMD has ever made a single GPU 10.5" card, so I don't think you will have to worry. If they do, you might have to drill out those rivets and move it down, then use bolts to hold it in so you can move it easier later.



It could possibly be based on the PCB, but I wouldn't see the issue with that. I highly doubt it would be the exact same as any of them, as thats what everyone was assuming about the 4890 and it's different.

I'm just so eager for these GPU's and for the PII 965 to come out, really hope the 965 is within a week or 2.

I'm kind of confused. Are you saying Rops are 8-8-8-8 or the SMID core is 8-8-8-8?

Would you expect a two 4770 gpus setup as one entire unit in the top single gpu setup (think 4870/4890)? Maybe with a 512 bit bus?

well i was happy with my move to get 2 4850's in crossfire witch was super easy to set up for me. i went from a mobile 9700 Pro to 2 4850 big move. i will probably buy some ATI 78x0 or 88x0 probably 8k. my 9700 is a tank still works fine can play WOw with res max like 1400x900 and everything like at middle and get 20-55fps on my old Dell lappy 512mb ram just ddr and some xp

well the thing about nvidia's card is that yea the SPU's are now mimd(i thk its that?) instead of simd. but change doesn't always mean performance boost, will not a game have to be coded to take advantage of that like games would with intel's HTT or just quad cores in general? also idk how competitive nvidia will be able to be. 40nm obviously isn't as perfected as 55nm or 65nm was/is. So as we all know nvidia's yields will be down right shit because of monolithic design. So their prices will be high unless they plan to go ahead and compete at a financial loss. All those defective GPU's they'll be getting out of the wafer they need to make up for in price on the working GPU's. I think that is why nvidia's GPU isn't expected till next year where as ATI's is this year, because yield wise, ATI can manage to release earlier but nvidia will probly only do a paper launch and not an actual release as their stock would diminish too soon and mainly ATI cards would be left. So build up what stock they can now and expect 40nm process to be much better by Q4/Q1 of this and the coming year. Well that's my assumption anyways

Well, despite the bottleneck, I still like my HD 3870. I will never leave this card until both Nvidia and ATI get compared with their new series of DX11 hardware. If anything, the only action I would do is look for a deal locally if anyone in town's ditching an HD 3870.

Maybe when it comes to benching, anythings a bottleneck really unless your running the top processor. But as far as gaming goes, no. 1 gen GPU jump just isn't going to drop the 720 to crap, the last gen of procs was already over powered (granted not on AMD side). The C2Q's have been out for 2 years and still handle the top GPU's great, and I would expect the same for the i7's and PII's, the 720 is a beast!

If the 58XX cards really do have 32 rops then the deciding factor on the HD58XX cards will be the rops, not the shaders,

for example

if both the 4890 and the 58XX were at a 1GHZ core clock with 4890's 40tmu's vs the 5870's 48tmu's, the texture fill rate on both should be 40,000 and 48,000 respectively, and thats not much of a boost at all,

if both the 4890 and the 58XX were at a 1GHZ core clock with 4890's 16 rops vs the 5870's 32 rops, the pixel fill rate on both should be 16,000 and 32,000 and thats a big difference.

ATI has only used 16 rops on their high end cards since the X1800/x800's came out, so it will be very interesting to see how their performance will increase with double.
