Common sense is the first place you should be looking for... Otherwise the next best place is the changelog.

You didn't have to work with ESR for a decade. Standard Firefox supported WinXP until 2016. Why are you stuck with version 56? Are you trying hard not to migrate to WebExtensions?

While it's less than 50% safe for you if it's not "the dark internet" (which is called the Dark Web and/or darknet, BTW) since malicious sites also persist on the public internet. You could increase your safety percentage to 70% or more though if you use the latest browser version.
Also, that bit of comment kinda say enough about you; That you are someone who pirates a lot & casually doing things illegitimately. Sorry but I'm not a fan of piracy myself, so I guess this is where we end it.

I'v been using Chrome since forever but i keep Firefox as a secondary browser, sometimes Firefox feels a bit smooth from my experience. There is also Opera new gaming browser which aside from having gaming themes you can customize CPU and RAM limit in addition to network speed limit, quite handy if you are a streamer.

There are still plenty of other browsers ready to take it's place. Lunascape, Maxthon, Seamonkey & Advant comes to mind. Not to mention, that it has become more of a browser fork war now rather than the base browser itself that is competing. I myself am not in support of this browser war. It just creates user confusion, usability fragmentation, internet technology complexity with having to support & be compatible with all these browsers.

It is not Chrome but it is Chromium based, as reported by Microsoft here. That does not make it bad. I also switched to Edge (from Pale Moon) and for the most part, have been very happy with it. If you like add-ons, then that's one of the nice things about the new Edge, it supports most Chrome add-ons.

I do wish Microsoft picked a different name for it though. The first Edge that came out with W10 was a disaster. For one, it clearly was not finished - obviously shoved out the door by MS execs before it was ready just so it could be included in W10. Another big blunder by the execs and marketing weenies at MS.

I think it should have a different name because this new Edge is 99.9% different from the old Edge. The only thing (that .1%) that is the same is they are both browsers. Beyond that, they are nothing alike. But it seems MS likes to cause confusion by having different programs use the same or similar names. Like Windows Defender, the antispyware for W7 and Windows Defender, the antimalware for W10. Or Outlook, Outlook Express, and Outlook.com.

I personally think MS was being smart here, not lazy. They received years of criticism for IE. The first Edge was a fiasco. Why risk 3 strikes to re-invent the wheel when they knew the MS bashers would automatically hate it? MS didn't just take Chromium and make yet another Chromium based browser out it. MS swallowed their pride, admitted defeat and actually partnered with Google on this. I think that was smart. And good for us. A win-win.

The only thing I don't really like now is the "search on this page" (Ctrl-F or F3) feature. There currently is no way to tell it to search for whole words only. For example, if I wanted to search for IE on this page, it is going to find it 15 times, instead of the three I'm really looking for.

Trick I use to search for words only is to add a space before and after the word I'm searching.

Also if you want to use a fork of chrome there is sr ironware. Edge is good, the original on windows 10(although kind of buggy) and the new chrome based one. I would say edge is the best browser now.

Icedragon is outdated & hasn't been updated since May 2019 & shouldn't be used. Always keep the browser up-to-date to ensure safe & secure browsing experience along with getting the latest features. Every browser nowadays is touting privacy feature & auto update can also be turned off in Firefox.

Brave and chrome on macbook A1990. Mainly im using chrome, its fast enaugh and i like it, but there is other side. Cpu gets hot quickly. With external 27 inch 1080p screen getting 70-75 all the time. Safari is good but since im quite often using lighthouse its not an option

I don't know if location or internet provider has anything to do with the speed of our browsers, I'm on a 1GHz service, Edge does seem a little faster than Chrome in my location, but I still use both. I still have Firefox, but I hardly ever use it anymore, I'm wondering is I should just remove it?

Dunno if this applies to you but try solution(?) on post #14 (sorry for the shameless plug ).
If you are no longer using Firefox or any program, you should remove it. Why bother clogging up you drive?

The original Edge on W10 was not good. And it was not that it was buggy. The problem was it clearly was unfinished and incomplete when released with W10. And it was so bad, incomplete and unsupportable, that even Microsoft realized it was a lost cause. So they abandoned it. The new Edge should not be compared with the old as they are totally different. Their only similarities are that they are both browsers and both named Microsoft Edge. That's it.

Both absolutely do have a great deal to do with browser performance. That said, location and ISP would affect the performance of any browser you use in a similar fashion.

Yes, I just removed Firefox, I read post #14 but I'm on ethernet, I didn't know you could change your DNS settings.

The new Edge should not be compared with the old as they are totally different. Their only similarities are that they are both browsers and both named Microsoft Edge.

I agree, I never did use the old Edge.

You can but it will only apply to the computer that you set. Just go to "Network Connections" folder, right-click to properties on the connection you use, select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" then click properties, select "Use the following DNS server addresses:", then type in the preferred DNS resolver service. I suggest Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 since they are known to be the fastest. So if for example you decide to go with Cloudflare, then just type in 1.1.1.1 in "Preferred DNS server:" & 1.0.0.1 in "Alternate DNS server:". This doesn't filter anything though. If you want the service that filters Phishing sites & malware sites, then just change those numbers to 1.1.1.2 & 1.0.0.2 respectively. Hope this doesn't confuse you.

Ok thanks! I've done this on my iPhone, not sure it helps a lot, since I still have the iPhone 6s so it's not the latest and greatest, but it's does everything I need in a phone.

I did. I even tried to give it a fair chance by giving myself time to get used to something new and different - just so I could honestly say I gave it an honest try. But there were just way too many unfinished and incomplete features to stick with it.

The original edge is good, I still use it and it scored the highest in performance tests when it was released. I don't know how it rates now but it is still zippy. MSFT should have continued to develop it than rely on the work of someone else(chromium) although the new edge is fast too.

are you sure you about auto-update. I guess you can turn it off but it constantly annoys you about updating. i use firefox as an unmodified browser for certain websites that i dont want to break with all my extensions.

No. It was doomed from the start. It would have been throwing good money after bad that would have done nothing but earned Microsoft even more bad publicity.

What they should have done was not release it with Windows 10. Instead, they should have continued development on IE instead of letting it slide to at least keep those of us who liked IE on board. In the meantime, they should have pressed on with development of the original Edge and released it when and only when it was ready.

But because they rushed the original Edge out the door before it was finished, they blew it. It was a lost cause, money pit after that, with no way to recover. It would not serve their customers or their shareholders to keep development going.

Yes it did. But ask yourself, why? The reason was simple. Many of its modules (features) were unfinished/disabled and it had no add-in/extension support. A browser could not get any "lighter". But people want their browsers to do more and it couldn't.

I went with Slimjet, a chromium based browser, about a year ago. It's all I use now on all my 12 computers, W10 or various linux distros. I CCleaner and Glary's clean them about once a month. I've had no slow down or issues, and it updates regularly. I would recommend it to anyone, over MS Edge.

P.S. no ads. Best built in ad-blocker I've seen, better than Opera, IMHO.

For me, Legacy Edge always worked well--it was fast and fairly resource-efficient. Its "major" problem for me was that it didn't support a lot of extensions, you were severely limited to the few from Microsoft Store. Plus, it was too embedded into the Windows operating system.

Right now, I like Opera and chromium Edge--I like that they're made from open-source code and have many more options for add-ons and extensions. They're fast and generally reliable.

I won't use many Google products, even though Chrome is probably the *best* in terms of performance and security from its sandbox and its zero-day watchdogs. But Google is unfairly enriched in my opinion and likely deserves the lawsuit it's embroiled in now.

Opera is a good browser. I always thought IE was the worst browser. Edge is also really efficient and uses least ram of any browser. I think it's good that it was lightweight and it does have extensions, like the last poster said you can download them from microsoft store. For example I have u block origin on my edge browser. But it is limited I will admit but I think fundamentally it was a good browser and they should have continued to develop it. Although really I don't care that much about browsers and I think in general the internet has gone down hill. Browsers are way too bloated and you practically have to modify them or use a fork for them to be useful and the internet is full of crap now. I just want to use the internet as a resource and its all videos, ads, pictures, I particularly hate the auto-play videos. Imo the internet has really been dumbed down.

I don't get how edge can be a money pit because browsers don't make money anyway right? Since they give it away it for free? Or maybe they have some kind of deal like firefox and google did or with edge people are more likely to use bing or other microsoft services.

Auto-updates can be turned off in the Options menu (aboutreferences) in the section that says Firefox Updates. If the annoyance you are talking about is the update notification, then you could always just ignore it. They don't show up often anyway if your browser is constantly up-to-date.
