CrossfireX Disappointment.

Crossfire is awesome, i have a pair of 4670s with a X3 @ 3.2 hitting 14500 in 3dm06. CPU is a very big performance factor. More GPUs MORE CPU POWAAH you will need.

Wait a moment mailman, What res do you usually play at? 1680x1050?

EDIT:

Only reason I asked, the higher your res, less your going to notice cpu bottleneck. No offense but you should've gone dual (or above) of 2.8Ghz+.

No offense taken man. I'm still learning about PC's and such. Its why I'm here so often

Anyway I don't/can't go past 1680x1050.

I found a PII 940 for about 230 bucks. But I'm short on cash now.

Anyone want to trade a PII 940 for an old Xbox. A dented GTO bumper and a tube sock that could kill a kangaroo like a boomerang?

It's not stable with a 100mhz increase. I'm not so sure a increase in voltage would matter.

I forgot my board has an "Easy OC Switch" that allows you to OC directly on the board. When I tried to OC I did it through the bios. Maybe if I do it by hand Ill get better results. What do you guys think? Check out the attached image. Its all done with jumpers.

That depends on resolution being used. My CPU still bottlenecks when I run 3DMark06.

For GAMING (which is the only thing that matters) the 720 BE will be a nice CPU and could OC well if you wanted to. It's a more efficient CPU than the older phenom x3. You should also try what I mentioned about the multiGPU option in the settings for lost planet to make sure the game is working with crossfire.

Just a guess but I'd say you need at least 3ghz out of a tri/quad AMD chip for CrossFire gains to be noticed.

*Perhaps selling me one of your cards at a heavily discounted price will help you feel better?

For 3DMark06 default tests.. yes, I think so too. If he's gaming @ 1680x1050 he should still see some scaling.. at least 20% I think. it's not he's using a Sempron @ 1.5Ghz

No but Ill be happy to sell you a harden tube sock at a greatly reduced price.

Anyway I didnt install crossfire the way it was explained in the thread you posted. I followed ATI directions. Do you think I would see a large boost by reinstalling as the thread stated?

You can try it if you can get a few hundred Mhz then you know the chip can OC... it's still not the fastest CPU/cycle though.

Uninstall drivers, restart and run driver sweeper. Both cards in, install new drivers. Or, do the dreaded O/S reinstall.

I did what ATI directions suggested for my old 2 x 3870's. Done what that thread said and only helped 500marks in 3dm. So not worth the time. I think for now u should take out a card and just leave one. Because if u don;t oc it's useless and if it's useless why don't u take it out so it doesn't suck useless power. Save up for a PII first.

Your Phenom is responsible. Phenoms are terrible when handling games. Go for a Phenom 2 or kick the results off with an i7 like I did.

My reason: The bandwidth the CPU outputs.

Could always try tightening your ram timings to your cpu and get better latency. My whole point of my previous post was just this; If your going to play a game anything below 1440x900/1280x1024 will be cpu bottlenecked. 1680x1050 not as much so. What your going to experience with a cpu overclock is a "boost" in performance going from gaming @ 1440x900 to 1680x1050.

So set everything for 1680x1050 and game away!!!! xD

Wait a second. I dont understand. My CPU is the bottleneck however if I up the resolution Ill get better FPS? Or just better FPS for that resolution?

I have a 750watt Corsair. Power is the least of my worries right now. But thanks for the info on the install. Ill leave it like it is.

Thats what I did. Only I ran driver sweeper in safe mode.

You wont notice the so called bottleneck as much. It will still be there but your cpu usage will lessen and gpu usage will be higher. Try tightening your ram timings a little if you can't OC. That is very strange tho that you cant raise your cpu even the smallest nudge.
