Did Nvidia purposely gimp the performance of 50xx series cards with drivers

Purposely, I doubt, but given the other myriad of things that have gone wrong with the 50 series/launch
Exactly. They messed up so many things but this one's on purpose? Sounds like something taken straight from Idiocracy lol

:"We gimped our new stuffs! Now we just wait and see how AMD will sufffer, they'll never see it coming, muahahaha!"

Frustrated World Cup GIF

Seriously, if you read this guy's replies and don't immediately notice the ChatCrappyTea-style bullshit, you need to replace your brain with one.

I mean...

Gimping application-specific performance in order to promote your own, more expensive product that are marketed for said applications makes sense (from a cynical pov).
Gimping performance in the same applications you're marketing the cards for without having any other product you're trying to boost or gaining anything whatsoever is... Well...

CAD/CAE viewports may use similar APIs to your typical video game, but the renderer is not designed nor do they work the same way. Plus, GPU vendors do provide program-specific optimisations (the so called "profiles"), and said programs are obviously classified into "games" and "stuff you'd expect a professional working for a $$$-loaded engineering firm be using."
Waiting for the github repo full of malware... this thread is amazing... that any of you were even debating if this is real is very, very.... I dunno. It lands somewhere between sad and hillarious.

There is nothing to overlook, they release a product that's artificially limited, wait to see how competition performs, either unlock the performance or leave it as is so that the next generation may appear to have a larger performance uplift.
You do realise that people are actively studying these platforms and any such limitation would be eventually get caught, right?

The scheme you're imagining can be more easily achieved by simply cutting the hardware itself. Saves them chips cost, less prone to legal action, with the added bonus of having the ability to make a new SKU to sell in the same generation, instead of upgrading what you have already sold, which is obviously counterproductive to people who scheme as proposed, especially when your strongest competition is yourself.
Now if you thought about it a little, you'd actually notice that the hardware route isn't just safer and cheaper, it's the one actually used in practice. Release the non-Ti Maxwells and Pascals, give it a year, then follow with the uncut Ti chips!

That's what they did when Vega launched, it doesn't matter if it's compute or graphics, the principle is the same.
Nvidia released a driver that added 40% generic performance on the same hardware? My poor 1080 must have missed that one.
Comparing performance around Vega's launch versus those around the GTX 1070 Ti's (which is itself an example of the above) doesn't show any significant changes. It does show Nvidia releasing a... less cut chip to readjust its offerings.

Wait! Was copilot or whatevertheyusethesedays trained on malware code? Seriously asking.

That thread has already been deleted, because it's stupid FUD.

Reddit, despite being a cesspool of questionable intellect and morals, is still capable of weeding out truly stupid bullshit.

So many people just want to hate on Nvidia, they would jump on anything. Valid or not, it doesn't matter to them. It's borderline irrational, just like how prices are for graphics card these days.

There are good reasons, lots of it to be honest, to be upset with Nvidia but on Reddit it just descent into hysteria.

The hyperbole aside, yes a full recall of all models possibly affected is how a company that cares about their customers should operate because not even Nvidia knew how many models were potentially defective until people found missing ROPs, but I'm not even going to argue with someone so high on the team green copium they bought a 5080.

I’m so glad AMD did a full recall of all the B2 stepping Phenom CPUs for the TLB bug, because they care about their customers.

I’m also glad they did a full recall of the 7900XTX when the defective vapor chamber issue was found, because they care about their customers.

I’m glad when AMD sent technicians to people’s homes to fix people’s PCs when the Adrenaline 23.2.2 drivers broke them, because they care about their customers.

I’m glad AMD refunded all the customers that bought boards for Quad-FX cpu upgrades after they cancelled the program, because they care about their customers.

AMD truly cares about their customers.

I saw that guy's posts here yesterday and searched him online to find the github repo and found the Reddit thread while he was still posting there.

I don't know squat about details in his claims but his entire personality was identical to those Free-Energy/Flat Earth/[favorite conspiracy theory here] nutcases. So I assumed he found some detail which might be a fixable bug to make a calculation go faster. And not affect general GPU performance at all.

Seems it's going that way. [insert MJ popcorn gif here]

Troll seems too dedicated. Making how many accounts to post across multiple places, including here, leaking his own full name and everything? Sounds like more than just trolling IMO. Isn't impossible he had a psychotic break (No kidding, I've seen it happen before to stupider degrees / angles)

I think its funny though how quickly his arguments got dismantled and how pissed off he got that people didn't take him seriously; he seemed genuinely angry about the sarcasm.

He even leaked his own name (and his email) just to.. 'troll.' I doubt it.

The fact he couldn't provide any ingame benchmark data, only a vague passmark benchmark and a unverified cinebench benchmark while also ragebaiting people here, it was pretty obvious he wasn't being completely transparent, hiding behind the 'b-but I wanna be nvidia's friend' shit.

He definitely seems like just a nutcase. Not a troll, too dedicated to be a troll imo.

Definitely more than Nvidia does, you clicked "like" on another post saying 2017 is digging, but then you go and dig up things from over a decade ago, come on you're reaching here, nice try though.
AMD did do a full recall on the 7900XTX MBA edition, context is important but it's clear you weren't going for any truthful accuracy. As for drivers, I like how Nvidia fans ignored the black screen issues and continue to act like their favorite company has flawless drivers. Everyone has shitty drivers sometimes.

I don't see how anyone in their right mind would buy an RTX 50 series card with all the issues those cards are having, and because of those issues I'm not surprised some people fell for a troll spreading BS.

Am I missing something or is the reddit post just a title with no content?

Please some one summarise here.

The post was deleted.

Basically, it as just rambling about how NVIDIA "gimped" the drivers by accident and that the performance was actually much better than what we got. Evidence provided was at best, some a unverified cinebench score, a single passmark screenshot, and him explaining how he had to change the driver in the most vague way possible to 'stay friends with NVIDIA'... yada. Also contained a email of him talking to a engineer at NVIDIA or something, but I'm pretty sure that email was debunked too.

For the record, this guy is also the same guy who was posting here.

Most of his other claims have been debunked, too.

Corporate intrigue, a random consumer stumble across it by accident and exposes the corruption involved. Netflix needs to make it into a movie, and it will have better plot than 90% of their movies.

They will be a ready made villain too. The head of a giant organization who wears nothing but black leather jackets.

Who would have thought it'd be this easy to prank the tech community... you folks better hope I never get bored :nutkick:

I been reading 'debate' on Flat Earther since 2015 and yeah that's pretty accurate way of saying what happening here. Guy claims he 'unlock' some performance but then only posting crazy numbers in text and some screenshot that he took by his phone horizontally but posting them in portrait mode that only shows the same score as other 5080, hilarious  he still rambling in reddit like no tomorrow it seems.

How dare you even question the obvious truth. The earth is flat. Checkmate, round earthers.

@Frizz
Yeah, absolutely, I am sure that a VP of software engineering in a multi-trillion dollar company is going to take his time to have a Zoom meeting with some rando who posts conspiracy theories online. Yup. Not even sending an underling or a PR guy, just all in by himself. Seems legit, that’s how it works. Next stage is an in-person meeting with Jensen via a paid by NV flight and accommodation in Santa Clara.

Yeah he kinda said himself he had a brain disease and was bored on the same thread. It might be approriate for the mods to shutdown that account and any related topics at this point..

Most malware uploaded to github is not in source form, but that would be hillarious.

Dedicated trolls and nutcases would be a nearly circular Venn Diagram IMO, but yeah this seems even more "mental disorder" side of it than the average troll.

They missed a lot of things. Like brain cells.

It's sad that gpus makers are turning almost into political parties for people that sit in one camp or the other and will just believe any made up BS about the company they choose not to like.

Poor mental health is an epidemic out here in the states I'm sure there are plenty of people running around untreated... Threads like this prove it.

It's not just mental health. Education is in the dumps too. But thats OT. I think this thread is done.

8800GTS 320,640, 8800GTX, GTX260 192 +216, GTX 970, I am sure I am missing a few.. but those are the ones off the top of my head where Nv tried to pull fast ones.

But that guy.. talking about how he saw the code, unlocked something.. I could see that. Too bad he was so abrasive.
1060 3GB was nerfed
