Doing a possible system swap. Worth it?

Reason is that I bought a 1070ti for a steal and I'm pretty sure that my lowly 2500k will be bottlenecking it. I tried my friend's 1080 FE in my current system and Black Ops 3 was incredibly choppy with up and down spikes making it almost unplayable at 1080p even at low/mid settings.

Looking to swap for my brother's system:

i5-6500
ASRock Z170 Pro4
8GBx2 Corsair DDR4 2400 14-16-16-31

How much faster will it be than my current setup? (minus the 1070ti of course)

I'm not willing to shell out money for a completely new build, so I was thinking this was a budget conscious way of "upgrading" my way to playable framerates.

Including my current system, I'll probably give him ~$100 or so. I want this to be almost no cost to me, which is why I'm considering swapping with him.

Decentish deal, still going to be a bottlenecked however. Try and opt for a i7 6400TE ES off TaoBao, or a i7 6700

Do the swap, change out the i5 for a i7 6700 and that should be able to run your games smoothly. 16GB of RAM in itself is good and needed for modern games.

I think the swap would be worth it, keeping in mind there is only about a 10% performance increase in processing power.

However, you would also be moving from ddr3 to ddr4 which will improve overall system performance and potentially help with those up and down spikes.

You could work towards getting a better cpu later on, the i7-7700K being the highest you could go.

I say go for it.

Is that 2500k overclocked? If you can hit 4.8 or 5ghz on it then it would be quite a boost

I would do the swap. To answer your question, the “faster” will be slight. You will have fewer dips and spikes, making for a much smoother experience.

That's stretching it quite a lot, remember the 2500k is OCable while the 6500 is not.
If the i5 were unlocked then it'd be a nice upgrade, with what he's getting atm I'd say it'd be a sidegrade at best assuming the 2500k was OCed.

And Its not just the memory. Sandy to Skylake is a nice upgrade even if he can't OC

But if he could run some benches on both that would be optimal

BO3 runs just fine on my 2700K / GTX 1080 system (see specs) and the 2500K isn't that much slower, so I think the stuttering is caused by something else. Don't replace your hardware because of a misdiagnosis.

EDIT: I see that you've got 8GB RAM while I have 16GB, so it's possible that this is making a difference. Try putting in 16GB from somewhere and see if it fixes the problem. Of course, it could be caused by many other things like drivers, a/v, other running programs, Windows updates etc, but this is a good place to start.

His system shouldn't stutter in BO3 with 8GB of ram. Something else is definitely causing this.

I'd hold onto that 2500K for a little bit longer. I made the switch to the 4690K and was sorely disappointed. The only time I really noticed a change that I considered worth the additional $220, was when I bought my 8600K ( but that also comes with the additional cost of DDR4)

I had my 1070 running with a 2600k, nearly the same as @qubit, I didn't for one second thing it was bottlenecking anything.. Even with a basic overclock it was more than enough to run anything I threw at it with decent frame rates.
I'd do a bit more digging as there's no way it should be choppy especially at low and medium settings..

As @qubit says, if you've only 8Gb of ram, it might be worth making sure you're not running close to the limit of your memory capacity.. If so, then I'd try and track down some extra ram for it. 1600Mhz DDR3 shouldn't be expensive at all and if you have 2 4Gb sticks already, then see if you can grab two more of the same sticks if possible or if you can get a deal on 4 x 4Gb sticks even better

Don't believe all this bottlenecking crap.. Call it, holding it back....

have you tried overclock your i5 2500k and see if that can help.

Else if you are on a strict budget. An i7 3770k is maybe worfh considering. With this cpu you can keep yout current motherboard, memory and cpu cooler and if you overclock that i7 3770K, i think you can have a desent gaming system for a while longer, with out blowing your budget. All throw i dont know what an i7 3770K goes for used these days. But with that you will get hyper threading, more level 3 cache and a little bit better ipc, all this together with a overclock, will give a better gaming exsperience.

Else i think you will be better off with an i7 6700k cpu. Games these day are beginning to benefit from more than just 4 cores/4 thteads.
