I would never upgrade from one generation ,to the next generation. Unless the performance increase was above 50% it's just not worth the $700 or whatever it is.

The 2080 is only about 5%-10% faster than a 1080ti but much more expensive.
True, but he's asking about 1080 vs 2080. 1080Ti is also becoming increasingly harder to find (if you need a new card).

Me neither, but in this particular case he would be getting exactly the kick he needs to play comfortably on his display.
While we're at is, I wouldn't pay for a 21:9 monitor either :D

Not currently;
1080ti's are over $1100 new;
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007709 601294835
And the 2080's start at about $750;
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709 601321493&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36
Even Amazon offerings start at $950;
https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Optimized-Interlaced-Graphics-11G-P4-6393-KR/dp/B06Y11DFZ3
Whereas the 2080 is only $770;
https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-256-Bit-Backplate-Graphics/dp/B07GJ8X6Q2

So the reality is the 2080 is actually a much better value at the current moment. Of course that does depend on @lapino location in the world, prices might be different, but I'd imagine there not very different unless used 1080ti's are included.

Well not quite. I have just been able to order an EVGA RTX2080 SC Gaming for € 776 (Amazon.fr which ships to Belgium). There is not one GTX1080Ti over here which sells for less, so I guess that's a good deal right? My other option would be the MSI Gaming X Trio but this costs € 865 where I live. Is the EVGA as good? Or should I spend a small bit more for the MSI?

(my GTX1080 is being sold for € 425 so the EVGA will cost me € 350)

Mine is an EVGA and there have been zero problem with it. It was selected based on two considerations, Quality and Price. EVGA has done very well in the last few years keeping the quality high. MSI is good too but the price, at the time ordering mine, was too high. It was between an EVGA and a Zotac. I like both companies, but EVGA's price+shipping won out.

I am only recommending the 2080 because it is newer and the performance is generally the same. At this point, consider RTRT an unknown but you MIGHT be able to use it but you might not. Given where we are now, there is no guarantee that RTRT will be viable on the 2080.

However, if you are willing to buy used, 1080ti all the way.

Like I said before, the GTX1080Ti is more expensive than the RTX2080 over here, even 2nd hand. Got offered an EVGA GTX1080Ti FTW for € 850, the EVGA RTX2080 SC Gaming is € 776... Just a bit worried the EVGA will be too loud with the 'only' 2 slot cooler.

Unlikely, my last EVGA was a 980 SC and I didn't like it because I got unlucky in the silicon lottery but it was very quiet. Not a 2080 but it is the only experience I got.

EVGA is better then MSI in my book. But they're not too widespread in Europe, so Europeans are more familiar with MSI.

1080ti on Reddit hardware swap go for 500 to 550usd, used. Check with sellers about shipping to different countries.

No? Why wouldn't I upgrade from a 1060 to a 2070+ if the budget allows? Its all about budget as they are all an upgrade. The difference is the 'worth' to the user and if they can afford it, right? So, the case for it will vary by person. You may not feel its worth it to upgrade one gen, others, do and can, it is just situation dependent.

Reddit? Not exactly a safe way to buy.. I wouldn't.

Exactly. The upgrade from a 1080 to 2080 was something I fussed about. Wasn't going to and in the beginning was a fan of RTX. Then I saw what it could do and my mind was changed. Skipped over the GTX600's and GTX900's because the value wasn't there. The GTX1000's showed excellent value. Might be in the minority in this opinion, but I feel the value is there for the RTX's as well.

You wont get many takers on these being a good value. :p
Why not? The prices have come down, the performance bump is a good one and the GTX1000 series is almost gone from the retail space. Only the cards NVidia sells themselves are the expensive ones. Cards from AIB's are more reasonable and are coming down at a steady rate.

Sorry, yes... initially, it was terrible. Since stock on Pascal is fading away and they are becoming more expensive in both the new used markets, that has changed significantly. Upon release, 1080Ti's were $800. Now you can't find a new one much under $1100. At that point, what is another $100 for a far superior performing card? Its a dynamic situation.

Oh... you still won't get many takers on these being a good value. Good luck swaying the likes of some people... LOL!

Honestly, 35% really isn't that bad. Price doesn't seem to be a problem either because they are selling like hot cakes. I'm just not seeing the viability of RTX on anything other than a 2080ti at this point. The question will be how much graphical loads are going to increase outside of RTX over the next 2 years which has seemed kinda flat over the last one or two. If graphics loads stay rather steady then the 2080 stands a chance at being able to stay just inside the useful level. Frankly, I think the 2070 is best served for people who want some tensor cores at a low price. What I don't know though is if the tensor cores are accessible for anything outside of DXR and DLSS.

BUT, considering adoption of DX12 has been abysmal, I am not expecting much different for RTX. Especially considering it is only viable on the 2080ti at resolutions that no one plays on that buys the *80+ series. The fact that AMD doesn't even care is telling. They have been relying on 'gimmicks' to differentiate themselves from nVidia and drive sales.

To be clear, I dont care at all about rtx. I just want a card that will give me higher fps than my gtx1080 at 3440x1440, so I hope the switch from gtx1080 to rtx2080 will be decent.
