yea the machine needs a good cleaning i can see it in the 2 pics dust is everywhere proper maintenance 101 clean the machine on a regular basis you can get away with a $5 can of air at wallmart 1 can usually lasts me 6-7 months within a month i can watch my CPU temps rise from dust so looking at that case that machine has been running way to hot for far to long hopefully no permanent damage has been done

While you are in there cleaning, you might want to take a look at the GPU heatsink and fan, and give those a good shot of compressed air also, they are probably pretty dusty also.

hopefully no permanent damage has been done

The good thing is that the automatic shutting down is supposed to prevent permanent damage from overheating. Key word there is "supposed".

lol well if a $5 can lasts me 6 months its $10 a year = 9 years before an air compressor would pay for itself in terms of cleaning my pc

But they have sooooo many other uses, like airing up tires on your car or scaring the crap out of your dog or cat.

And you can find them cheaper than that, $90 is just what I paid for my 5 Gallon, you can get a 3 Gallon for $60 new, and I've seen them for under $30 used.

meh i prefer to buy the cans use it till its almost empty then shoot it from a safe distance its more fun  and my cat is blind and already scared half the time anyway scaring him any more is likely to make me have to clean his surprise off the floor lol ill stick to the small can besides it makes a great method to kill bugs as well turn the can upside and the CO2 freezes the bastards on the spot works great on giant wolf spiders and barn spiders and i can keep my rig clean as well so its all good

As the designated spider killer in my house, I can say compressed air upside down is good at killing them, but they don't all die from it...found that out the hard way. So now I always make sure to smash those damn things good before picking them up to dispose of them...

And the ones out in the garage always die a fiery death thanks to my friend lysol...

Nice looking spider.
Should come over and visit the family friends over here.. They have decent spiders (we really only get Huntsman types, so they don't get too big.. maybe 8" across), which are bigger than some of the lorikeets in legspan. Those are the ones to stay away from.
Although the snakes tend to be more of an issue whilst gardening..
Gotta love it Down Under :p

Spiders could be indicative of a dusty environment, as this tends to invite bugs that they eat.
Dust may cause heat retention.

See what I did there?
:p

Got my 30gal clearance from Home Depot with an accessory kit (60% of the items worthless) for $150. Mainly for auto work though, hate to damage parts and have to run that thing just to clean a heatsink  /OT

OK I am back!

I want to give a hearty THANK YOU to this group.

I was able to solve my problem with the simple path:

1. opened PC & found that the heat sync was NOT properly seated. one of the 4 corners was not secured.
2. cleaned it all w/ air.
3. cleaned & reapplied the thermal compound.
4. reseated the fan.

Now under full load testing: Antivirus & streaming video & uploads I run at 60 degs tops! that is a 40-50 decrease from my original problem. How awesome!

Thank you all for your help & quick replies.
My only remaining action is to complete my $30 RMA back to newegg on all the high end heat sync & compound I bought. Not needed!

I knew it had to be the heatsink needing a re-seat. Happy to hear you fixed the problem. :toast:

What kind of thermal paste did you use?

I couldnt wait for the shipment from Newegg to come in so I got off the shelf goods from Staples:

Antec 5 paste
Canned air

Im running at 60 degrees across the board now.
The previous paste on the sync was not charred, but was all dried out & hard.
Before I return the newegg shipment, is there any benefit (longevity) of using the "better" arctic x3 I ordered?

Also: you can all see my config for my PC in my first post line. what kind of PC would you rate this? ie: is it fully loaded (not by your standards, but the average user). What should be done on a PC like this? Im trying to get a feel for just how souped up this baby is...

I would get the AC MX-3 still. It is non conductive, so it will not only cool better, but it's safer around components. You have a very capable machine. The Q6600 is still a good processor, especially if its overclocked. However, you only want to do that if you buy a better cooler. The video card is fine too, especially if that 8800GTS is a 512 version.

As a typical performance addict, I am now going to take the bait & ask you about overclocking.
Forget the fact that I just saved my machine from catching on fire... now I want More!!!

Paulieg: Any suggestions on how to easily, safely calibrate on overclock? software or tools, Id rather not go into bios or dos if I dont have too. My computer programming skills timed out with the Vic 20 :)

If the run of the mill teenag kid overclocker can come to gripes with a bios i don't believe you will have too hard a time learning the ropes ;)

You just need to find yourself a comprehensive guide for an Intel system and you will be on your way

My question to you though is are you actually doing anything that is going to warrant the overclock?

Unless your gaming with your PC or performing similar intensive tasks your current clocking is just fine for office/daily user tasks you mentioned

Don't use any kind of software to overclock. The bios only LOOKS intimidating. With a bit of direction, it's easy to change a couple of settings to pull a few hundred extra mhz out of that chip. Hell, you might get a decent overclock without needing to mess with voltages.

Tis true to a certain extent. Then again, it's just fun to see what you can get out of a chip. Kinda like the Chevelle I drove last week. I just couldn't help but floor the gas. I just needed to know what she could do.

Oh well i know that...just trying to point out that its not going to have a huge impact on his daily tasking

After the fun wears off you've got to think economically ;) my school/browsing station's running at a measly 800Mhz and its not that big of a difference compared to 3.8Ghz:ohwell:
