Ok, I'm building a computer for my friend, it's got X58 board which is SLI capable, 920 i7, ect. The graphics card budget is about £300-£500. What should I get?

Gtx 285/295

Maybe 4870 X 2 or dual 4850 X 2's if he were to go the ATI route?

4870x2 FTW!

So how about two 4850x2 1GB ?

Is the board both SLI and Crossfire capable? I heard some weren't.

I'd get two GTX 280s. He should be fine with those. Start with one and get another if he isn't happy. :P

Quick question, will I run into difficulty when installing two dual slot GPUs in a Antec 900 case

GTX 295 is my suggestions ~ however I am bias>>
Had two 4870's in Crossfire and was dissapointed with their performance. I am amazed with the performance with the 295

If you cannot afford the 295, go with the 285 ~ I find the NVIDIA drivers to currently be superior to the ATI drivers (personal opinion after three years of owning ATI GPU's).

I have been asking myself the exact same question, and as much as I think I should go with two 280s (Buy one and then the other to save spending money all at once)
But I just don't think I will be satisfied personally unless I get a 4870x2 :/ And I don't know why.
So I say go for a 4870x2 :)

295 all the way...beats having to install so many cards...

4870 X2's are cheaper and the performance is negligible.

I'd say Quad 4850 if hes got the money to spend there shouldnt be too much of a prob getting them in there..i have a antec 900 myself they look roomy enuff

I wouldn't get more than two cards honestly. I would imagine it's a pain in the ass to get setup and it's been proven that 4 GPU's perform about the same as 3.

I vote GTX285. Very good for the money. An even better deal is the 4850x2 but u'll have to deal with driver problems for a while.

I have do say GTX 295

The driver problems are gone as it's now an official SKU in the 9.1 and 9.2 drivers and it's going to be supported from now on.

Sorry - but I disagree with you :toast:

Plus as I stated ealier ~ it is my opinion that Nvidia drivers are better.

It depends on the monitor being used.........

If talking single GPU, I'd go either cheapest GTX 285 or 260 Core 216.
If talking dual GPU, I'd go either GTX 295, or a pair of cheap GTX 260's.

Cheapest GTX 260(192 core) is $200, 2=$400
on Newegg
OOS cheapest GTX 295 is $500 on Newegg
For about $470, you can get 2 XFX GTX 260 Core 216's on Newegg

Cheapest GTX 280 is around $325, 2=$650 on Newegg

Cheapest GTX 285 is around $350, 2=$700 on newegg

.....I agree w/ HammerON about Nvidia drivers. Well, maybe they're not "better", but they're easier to follow(in use and which is latest).

i would not go with quad cards... just unnecessary. Go with a 4870x2! They are cheaper than the 295's and not worse by much. But hey 295's are great so you could get one of them too. Either way, get a card with 2 gpu's on one so you don't have to worry about spacial issues

get a gtx 280 as because of the gtx 285, these are cheaper than ever now and when games struggles, get another and if the mobo is 3 way sli capable, GET ANOTHER MORE!

Just one GTX 295 will do what you want and then some.

ohhh.. I got it.. I think he should crossfire 2 4870X2's and buy a GTX 295 for PhysX.... :p

Dual 285's and OC!

a 4870x2/Gtx-295
