Guide to Radeon X800/X850 bios modding

Also i hate to be such a noob, but if i unlock these pipes, and do not overclock, or even if ido over clock,

Does this cause the dreaded artifacts i keep hearing about?

THANKS!

I did not know if there is a specital flash utility or what. So i guess i just use the one in that link. About the BIOS file, how do i know which one to use?

I see the post at the begining of this forum, and it states to simply export current bios with atitool, then modify the value at 0x7A where the second number is the only number that you change. Basicly, if i wanted to unloc all 16 pipes, i just add a zero. then save it. Then open it in rabbit, and save it (based on my reading we do this to make sure there are no typos or something)

Then we copy that to the boot flopy and flash with teh command any atiflash util, and use the command

atiflash.exe -p -f -newbios 0 [bios name].bin, then reboot

Should i just use a bios from the bios download page or do the mod using the methos above.

If i should use a premade bios, which one should i use?

Its an ATI branded x850pro
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102606

That link has all the pictures for my card at every angle.

I would post the fuse data, but i have tried to click shift on all the settings, and i never get fuse data. and help is greatly apprecited. :respect:

You guys are he best, and i am :banghead:

To avoid further questions and number of unnecessary answers here you are Automated Flash Utility for X850PRO VIVO AGP (R481). If you can't see the fuses  just use the utility to flash with X850PRO BIOS with 16 pipes and see whether all the 16 pipes will work. If (after unilstalling and re-insatlling of the driver) you still have 12 pipes your fuses are not correct. Please read the "Flash Instructions" file before to ask.

ou are the man

WOW!! that is so much easier!! :toast:

One last question, it says that if i use the other bios,

The warnging that states "Flashing X850XT or X850XT PE BIOS on cards with single slot cooler can result in stopping of the fan. The problem is in the fan itself (way of managing from the BIOS). To avoid that just use the 16 pipe X850PRO BIOS. ATI Silencer 5 rev.2 (or ATI Silencer 4 rev.2) will fix that issue."

based on the above, if i understan correctly, i could use the bios that unlocks 16 pipes, and overclocks the chip and memory, as long as i install the ATI Silencer 4 rev.2, ot 4 rev 2?

How do i know if the gpu gets to hot? Is there a monitor for that, i see in the ATI tool where is shows the gpu, but what is too hot?

THANKS AGAIN, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

P.S SORRY FOR BEING A NOOB
Is there a warning before the card burns up?

I have no idea about other bios's as I edited my own for all 16.

Supposedly under 80c is within limits. Mine ran about 54c w/ the artic cooler that came w/ my card, gpu @ 530mhz. On water I get around 46c w/ the same clock.

unlocking 25% of the core usually makes quite a considerable difference, so long as the graphics card is the biggest bottleneck. i.e. your not running a 933mhz PIII or something stupid.

the full 16 pipelines is definatly something well worth having ;)

Thank you all for all of your help. I did a successfull flash using the auto flash. I confirmed the success using the ati systme infor mation.

Now in ATI tool when i do a few bench marks, then do a "Scan for artifacts" i get artifacts every .0060 seconds.... up to like 700 at times.

Then, i let it sit for a while and then do a scan for artifacts, and i get none for a long time,

Is this a bad thing? I have heard that this is a bad thing but.....

Any ideas

 You know what?

I think the artifacts may be a bug in the ATI tool, unless i am using it wrong.

To get artifacts i first perform a benchmark, then do a scan for artificats. Then i get artifacsts every time i do the test [only after a benchmark test]

However, if i do a benchmarkd, then close and reopen the benchmar tool, the artifacts problem goes away
I can run the scan for artifacts for ever with out running a benchmark 1st

If you use X850XT or PE BIOS (they are with 16 pipes) the type of fan-control is different that in the PRO BIOS. The fan with the single slot cooler is not suitable for PWM fan controll and just stops with X850XT or PE BIOS. The card overheats within seconds. With X850PRO 16 pipe BIOS that problem doesn't exist. You can monitor the temperature in ATITool (RivaTuner) or within the driver using XT or XT PE BIOS.

To create the artifacts problem-

first perform a benchmark, wait for it to complete,

then do a scan for artificats. i get artifacts every .00060 second after i do the test [only after a benchmark test]

However, if i do a benchmark, then close and reopen the ATI benchmar tool,
Then, perform a scan for artifacts, poof no artifacts. I also did a max gpu test, and after 67, i was still not getting any artifacts. However, if i do the max gpu test right after a benchmark, i get artifacts evey time i run it. But once again, a restart of the overclocking will take that problem away - seems like a bug, but im not sure.

I can run the scan for artifacts for ever with out running a benchmark 1st

THANK YOU very much, :toast: -

Guess its time to get the Arctic cooler then, thanks!

P.S. Any idea about the Artifacts i was getting in the above quote?

You can flash it but it will result in only 12 pipe XT or XT PE.

I have a problem when running FlashRom, it shows up for about 1-2 seconds then either quits itself or crashes, when I try to delete it, after about 7 seconds I get a message saying "Cannot delete Flashrom it is being used by another Person or Program" can anyone help me to slove this?

hello again

Ok dolf i update it s fine now....

I can overclook again with ATI tool or is not neccessary...thanks for ur help

Oooops another problem the fan is stopped ...didi u have any solution ...before my card burn ...and i can flash to 16 pipes u say ...

thanks dolf bye bye

I told you that the card CAN'T be unocked to 16 pipes. It just can be flashed to X850XT or XT PE BIOS but it will remain with 12 pipes. Use my automated flash utility to fix the problem with the fan BUT FIRST read the "Flash Instructions" file.

ok if i understand ...now i have flash to x850 xt pe

now i need to flash to 16 pipe x850 pro and i need change my fan to ATI SIlencer 5

correct...

In order to get the fan back - flash with X850PRO or X850PRO 16 pipes from the utility (which will change the card's name to X850PRO instead X850Series but won't result in 16 pipes). Don't forget to uninstall and re-install the drivers after using my utility because your "old" card will be recognized like new device.
If you change your cooler to Silencer you can flash to X850XT or X850XT PE and the fan will work normally but you will have again 12 pipes. Probably with good cooler (Silencer) you will be able to overclock your core to 570-590MHz which will partly compensate the lack of 16 pipes ;) .

sorry put this in the wrong subsection the first time

This is what I have X850pro VIVO (s/n 180536)
r481/ smasung 1.6
config_die_fuses 0xFFFFDFFF
config_substrate_fuses 0xFFFFFF9F
config_rom_fuses 0xA60
GB_pipe_select 0xAD46

I have hardmod the lasercut and flashes with x850xt pe bios-I get the speed no problems but I cannot get the pipes. I have checked the hardmod and it has connectivity with the broken "dot" if you want to call it that.
flashrom.exe -newbios -f -p 0 empty.bin
flashrom.exe -newbios -f -p 0 x850xtpe.bin
any advice or help to get these last 4 pipes or is this card "DIE" locked
Thanks

Unfortunately no more pipes for you. Sorry.

flashrom is meant to be ran from dos which can be accomplished through a bootable disk like a floppy, cdrom, it doesnt work from within windows. I did mine using a usb flashdrive.

Hi dolf, will need some linky's to help test four extra pipes if it looks good, the 7 is in number 5 slot, and F in number 4, I'm wondering what the 7 means anyway, did you see my other post in the other section below supturbo's? I'm crazy :P

It's a saphire x800 pro vivo agp

CONFIG_DIE_FUSE=0xFFF7FFFF
CONFIG_SUBSTRATE_FUSE=0xFFFFFF9F
CONFIG_ROM_FUSE=0x4021 Does this = bios locked 1 quad?

I haven't seen the core yet, but I'm looking forward to testing.

Fortunately your X800PRO will unlock. X800PRO AGP (R420&R423) is the only core which can be unlocked with such CONFIG_DIE_FUSE=0xFFF7FFFF values. But the X800PRO 16 pipe BIOS won't work with that card / core. It can be used to unlock the last quad only on cores with the following DIE values: CONFIG_DIE_FUSE=0xEFF7FFFF.

In order to unlock to 16 pipes you must use X800XT or X800XT PE AGP BIOS. My advice is to start with the X800XT (500/500MHz) and after the unlocking to test for max. core/memory. If your card is stable at 520/560MHz for min 20min under load then you can flash X800XT PE.

You can also use my Automated Flash Utility on bootable CD for X800PRO VIVO AGP, which contains the following options:

1. Flash to X800PRO 16 pipes (won't work on your card)
2. Flash to X800XT
3. Flash to X800XT PE
4. Rollback to X800PRO (original BIOS)

Read the flash instructions before to start and don't forget to uninstall the drivers and to install them after every flash procedure ;) .

Thank you for the help, that is great news. Any idea if it still has vivo functions, if there's no vivo in the new bios is it possible maybe to copy and paste a section of hex from a vivo bios into the non vivo bios so it still addresses the vivo functions?
