I think some website was desperate for a boost in traffic so they wrote some made up crap to generate it. Every time I hear a single word about half life 3 it's always some desperate attempt to create traction where there is none.

It'll be done when it's done, which is probably never.

Edit: just to note, every time we at NextPowerUP write an article about half life 3, we generate around ten times more traffic than the average article. If we really wanted to whore ourselves to click magnets, we'd write a half life 3 article every day, but then we'd lose all integrity and credit, because it's obvious hollow nonsense.

I don't think wccftech can be blamed in this instance. It's the makers of the video who look like they're trolling and winding up a lot of people. It's the HL writer saying that they're trolling too, so it looks like HL3 is still on the cards at some point.

Valve doesn't release financial info but I suspect, as well as many financial analysts also, that Valve is making hundreds of millions of dollars yearly taking a 30% cut from all of the games that Steam sales. If Valve were trying to make a profit solely on game development then I think we would have seen Ep 3 before now and possibly even more Half Life. They partly lack incentive to develop/release Ep 3 I guess and I suspect that they have a fear that fans will over expect to the point that if it's not an utterly amazing game then their reputation will take a hit. I haven't given up on Ep 3 just yet but I certainly understand why many have. If the new gen consoles and Source 2 doesn't give Valve enough of a push to make Ep 3 then nothing will imo.

I've got to say, you hit the nail on the head why Valve is no longer much of a studio. They make too much money for little risk now. No reason for them to change what works.

But honestly, I think HL3 will come out eventually: not today or this year, but probably after Jan. 2016.
What are the grounds for my assumption? All this buzz on the internet )))
People are talking about it almost everywhere, speculate about current development state and all the other stuff, which is a good sign for Valve - people are interested in HL3 and there is definitely a growing demand for it.
Once this phenomena reaches the critical point, we'll see some official announcements, project updates and maybe even a release date.

Regarding the state of present Valve games I have quite a few words to say:
1) TF2 sucks. After it wend FTP the general auditory has changed from friendly gamers who paid $50 for their Orange Box and gets as much fun out of it as possible to a trolling crowd of mostly brainless people. Unless you play on the private server with your friends - you're stuck. In the past 2 years I've installed and immediately uninstalled the game 4 times... and don't get me wrong - I love TF2. Me and my little brother clocked over 250 hours each in the first year-and-a-half since Orange Box release. In all the years after I barely made another 25 hours combined.
2) Portal is getting old. Considering how short both games in this series are I'm pretty sure that everyone who owns it have already played the crap out of it.
3) L4D series is still afloat and it is one of the best co-op games ever, but I can't imagine Valve making the third game any time soon. As a consumer I've only recently got to the point, where I could even justify the purchase of L4D2... mostly because L4D1 servers are empty.

In my opinion Dota 2 is probably the only Valve game that makes sense in year 2015 with excellent FTP+microtransactions model and still growing eSports hype.

HL3 is turning into another Duke Nukem.
Half Life I am not concerned about. It's time came and went, and for me the story is complete.

Besides, unless it uses something that looks and feels like the Half Life engine, then most of it's charm will be lost.

Half-life 3 will come out with Source2, and their HTC Vive VR headset or at least that's what I think.. I played HL2 with my DK1, and it is amazing at what Valve has done to make hl2 playable in VR is awesome. Walking through the city is amazing. It's amazing to see it like you are there.. but I can say one huge thing.. BARF CITY!... after playing it for 10 minutes I was ready to puke my guts out and I am someone that never got sick using it before. My tolerance is very high compared to say my wife or most people. She gets sick playing most of my VR Demos rather quick. The first VR thing she didn't get sick with was the new Google Cardboard v2.0 with insidious VR. It's just a interactive commercial for Insidious 3. I received my new Google Cardboard v2.0 the other week.

Playing HL2 is the main reason I didn't use my Oculus Rift for over 7+ Months.. lol I could play it fine for about 10 minutes, but I pushed through and played it for over hour and half and when I couldn't stand anymore I stopped and was sick the rest of the night.. I never puked, but I wanted too.. lol I just recently got the urge to use it again and check out the new VR stuff and motion sickness is a lot better with OR's new SDK were it shutters each eye. I'll try HL2 again with the new SDK and post back in my VR clubhouse thread. hehe but my vote is no... HL 3 will happen at some point!.. I hope.. ;p

7 years? it took almost 11.5 years for StarCraft 2 to come out after Brood Wars. That was the latest success in game necromancy granted they at least didn't cliff hanger you unless you did the special mission regarding Duran.

So obviously the hype train isn't everything. The idea that new tech must come out doesn't mesh either there have been plenty of gaming engine advancements since 2007, many of which have significantly changed the gaming landscape just as much as the tech in the first 2 Half Lifes. I don't think they're waiting on hype to die down, that's not going to happen and its usually bad to release a game after no one cares anymore. I also think they do care about the money. No business looks at a potential hundreds of millions of dollars and says "na, I don't want it" (unless of course doing so compromises their core values and sometimes even then they cave).

I have no idea why they haven't released episode 3 to at least wrap up the cliff hanger. What I do know is no one else knows either, no matter how much "research" they do into the subject.
