Hey guys,
I need some help with upgrading my old computer.
my atm specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
MoBo: Asus P5K
RAM: 8gb
GPU: asus GTX 285
some hdds and no name psu.

I use it to make some animations & rendering (Blender), 3d designing (SolidWorks) and gaming (bf3). Trust me, it works quite nice :)
It has around 4 or 5 yrs, but i don't have money to do big upgrade to newest specs and this'll be my main rig for next 1 or 1,5 year.
So, i need a new psu, old one is unstable and i can't trust it, while making bigger renders.
I think about corsair
> RM 550W gold (134$)
> CX 500W bronze (72$)
> HX 650W gold (153$) (smaller are not available)
> other?
Is it worth to get modular & gold one if it's 2x more expensive?
Is it enough wattage if i add watercooling for cpu and gpu (maybe better one in the future)? cause at 100% load (while rendering) i got ~80-85 celsius degrees at cpu. i gonna oc it, too.
I'll use that psu in my next rig.

And SSD:
> samsung evo 120gb (112$)
> kingston hyperx 120gb (122$)
> other?
which is better?
thanks for your help and all the advices :)

The gold psu saves you about 50 watt compared to a bronze one. And there sure are cheaper psus in gold.

When I was chosing to get a new SSD, I took the hyperx 3k because the writing wasn't cut like the samsung was and the price was about the same. With windows 8 I'm a bit dissapointed in its performance due to the hdd isn't really much slower though.

go for the bronze. gold will save you ~5% of your total wattage, which is not a lot with a system like that (its really worth it with crossfire and SLI systems, however)

the duck above me (pr0fessor) is correct that it may save 50 watts at most while the system is fully loaded, but it will be far less than that at idle.

80c is too hot. cool that CPU before you overclock.

I was talking about my system and its experience yeah. 1 gpu systems will have less savings. I can second that.

The modular thing at psus is recommendable for the air flow for your overclocking.

thanks :D
it running sometimes for couple hours loaded doing renderings, maybe i should get a gold one (corsair RM)? 550W will be enough (+watercoling)?

I don't have it in my country :(
I'll wait for other responses, but I think i get hyperx 3k, i read good opinions about it :)

if you're running your system 24/7 for years to come, sure, go for gold. the thing is a quality PSU is a quality PSU - my 1000W is hardly the most efficient out there (i get about 86% efficiency at idle, i've got a nice wall meter to tell me things) but its years old, second hand, and very reliable.

Yep, This has been my experience. And every time I have cut corners it has caused problems later. Spend the money and get a good one. As far as the RM550 its a fine PSU

That's cause HX 1000 are boss :)

ok :) hx 1000 is a monster :D that rm550 will be enough :P
And what about ssd? hyperX 3k or samsung evo?

What is your 1000W psu for, if you don't use any crossfire or sli? The best efficiency is around 40% - 80% as I know. 40% is 400W and I guess you don't even reach this under load. Do you? Never mind enough power isn't a bad thing.

it;s about me or about Mussels?
i said that i'll get 550W :p it's enough :P

Sorry that was a liddle offtopic. Hyper 3K or samsung EVO is for me like, Kingston has faster writings and Samsung makes really good harddisks. I really have good experiences of old samsung hdds at its lifetime.

Good PSUs get more efficient with less load not less. My RM650 is 82% @ full load. And 92% @ 70% load. I think Im reading your response wrong anyway

I vote kingston just cause I have a hyperX blue (5k) and a SSD NOW v300 and they both are reliable as heck.

Its doesnt matter with the SSD. The Samsung is a little more Newb friendly

Yeah, at load good psus get more efficent. But also at idle they leech less power. Of course not that much like under load. That doesn't matter for casual pc users anyway. :)

it matter for me, cause i don't want to pay more money for the useless power, which is transferrend into heat ;/

thanks people :) i think i get hyperx, it's a bit faster and difference in price is small between it and samsung :)

they're most efficient betwen about 40-70% load. at idle im under 10% load. anyway its off topic, i started PMing the duck about my PSU.

That's the thing about Kingston, IMHO, they are not the fastest but they are hella reliable. I have had a few flame wars about Samsung and Kingston. They are both very good, but I will go Kingston everytime because of my experiences with them and, BTW, they are the largest memory company out there. Wonder how they got there?

Please, say what you will. My mind is made up.
