I'm new to building computers, but I'm purchasing a ASUS P5Q and was looking into RAM for it.
I'm going to want RAM that will be able to deal with Audio production and VSTs, without hanging up.

I was looking at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145038

but I'm not sure if I'd be better off spending more money on something that will be much better and help me even more.

Any ideas?

That's a good deal right there.. how fast is DDR2 800 in comparison to today's high end RAM?

It's on par, really what you want to look for are D9 chips, they show the best bandwidth and the best overlcoking

A good rule of thumb for memory purchase is to get the maximum amout of memory for your budget. If you can get 4gigs for the price of the modules you listed.

Basically, Those you listed have L.E.D.s on the top, EPP and CAS4, that's what you're paying extra for. You don't really need LEDs or EPP.

I would recommend the Black Pi's or any 4GB kit that is CL4 really. I'm pretty sure audio production would benefit from the lower latency. I run Sonar and such on the rig in my specs. No lag, and works 100% for me.

Edit: The ram I'm using are Crucial Ballistx Tracers 2x1GB. The older ones with Micron D9's.

the patriots i posted do 1066 4-4-4-12 @2.2v

No offense dude but i have yet to see any 2*2 GB kits doing 4-4-4-12 @ over 1000.

The closest i'm aware of are these.

Does NOT mean such kits don't exist: only that i haven't seen any.

I imagine those were @ 5-5-5-12 and not 4-4-4-12 but, ofc, i cannot be certain.

You dudes are lucky, in US: those black PI @ 800 cost just over 70 euros while you can get then for just under $50.

I have GSkill's PI 8000 (not black) that are supposed to run @ 8000 with 5-5-5-15 and i have them @ 1.9 in BIOS (board doesn't say how much actually gives, in windows, and i don't know if it overvolts) but, best of all, they run almost cool (on touch) or, @ least, much cooler then my Corsair DHX C4 ever did. If black PI kits are as good, as these GSkill i have, i recommend them.

Can't you check how much your vDIMM actually is in your board as well? My P5QL-E also doesn't allow it (see attachment below) :(

It passes Linpack with 10 passes and gives zero errors, with the RAM @ 1.9, in BIOS.

I removed my OC, when i still had the Rampage Formula because the electric bill so demanded it :(

I have heard great things about GSkill RAM, but this is the 1st kit i have from them.

@ the OP: be sure that your board supports the RAM you want to avoid what happened with my Rampage and 4*2 GB corsair DHX CL4 @ 6400 as they weren't 100% stable due to lack of compatibility.
