Any got any ideas on making a custom fan filter to stop dust build-up inside case? I was thinking a net curtain type material. Any ideads welcome.

Sounds kool, have u tried it? Is it effective?

Use Dryer sheets, then it smells good also.

lol... that would work... buy an cheep filter from Wal-mart and cut the desired filter from that...

Excellent idea...I always used my lady's old pantyhose.....just started saving the ones with runs in them....cut to fit and stretch ot over the fan, screw thro the nylon then cut off the excess with a sharp knife if needed!

I've used scotch brite pads, they will lower the CFM, but they do a damn good job of catching dust. I just got some very cheap packs (6 for $1), worked very well. Rinse off. Dryer sheets is actually a great idea also!

I finally am just using actual fan filters from Newegg, they were pretty cheap, the filter is retained in a snap in plastic housing. One section of the plastic housing scews in with the fan, the other snaps over that to retain the filter...very easy to work with. Does a good job of catching dust and looks cleaner if fans are visible.

I've heard of more than a few people using the panty hose trick to get the best balance between catching dust and not losing too much airflow. I'm still a firm believer in letting fans run free and using compressed air often.

Yes they work, but they get clogged fast, and sometimes they rip depending on how strong the fan is. You can back them with a piece of wire mesh from hardware store.

Panty hose last longer, use the legs, or the smell might get you aroused...lol.

Horny little man! lol
I'd back anything like the hose or the dryer cloths with a piece of wire mesh... that way nothing gets stuck up into the fans and hurt it...

If the hose are pulled taught there was no need for mesh when I was using them.....Lasted around a month or two here , but my house is old and dusty!

ive said it b4 and ill say it again:

panty hose is the best!

good filtration with minimal effect on cooling and noise ;) need more filtration? double 'em up!

swiffer sheets/dryer sheets are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too restrictive and will add lots of noise and reduce airflow considerably.

why do you think its hard to find pre-made fan filters these days? because no-one wants to pay 4$-10$ for something that WILL reduce flow and increase noise.

pantyhose FTW!

what about the screening like in a tent that can keep out no seems

Thanks 4 the suggestions, I think I'm gonna try some tights/pantyhose. :D

trouble is any kind of filtering kills the airflow.. if u dont need the airflow u dont need the fans.. i think the only answer is to blow your case out on a regular basis..

trog

I use regular furnace filters on my intake fans. remove the element from the cardboard and cut to size. :)

I randomly suggest, buying foam air filter for a dirt bike, yz125. Then cut it to shape. High performance air intake :D:D

or
Sump foam http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Black-Sump-Fo...yZ122304QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
This stuff would be alot better, its more of an open pore foam but will catch dust no sweat and will alot the fan to operate without a problem with theairflow, and also comes in sheets. Can be cut to any sizeor width

to slow/stop dust buildup - leave the rig off . . .

the swiffer refills work really good, and I haven't noticed much of a drop in airflow

Thats a good idea, but I'm sure people would rather pay a lot less for their filtering needs as I think furnace filters cost quite a bit compared to other solutions.

I get the no frills filters for a about $5.00 at the building suply store, and cut to fit. Gives me 36 filters for my comp @ about $0.14 each

x2. I've used filters before, and I'd rather have the full airflow and lack of sound. Remember that putting any restrictions on a fan also make the fan louder. And even then, after awhile you'll still have to blow the dust out of your PC anyway, because as we all know no filter is perfect.

That deserved a thanks. I can't believe I never thought of using dryer sheets or pantyhose.

I don't have access to pantyhose, but I do have dryer sheets a couple of feet away from me.
