Thanks guys.. I'm actually considering starting an IHS removal service. People can send me their processors, and for a small fee, say $10, and I will remove their IHS for them, and if I break it I will take full responsibilty for replacing the processor. :) What do you guys think of that?
Yes because you have such a good track record of timely repairs ;)

So wouldn't the heatsink being in more direct contact with the CPU have a risk of shorting something?

not realy a small chance, its kinda just like the gpu, and as long as your heasink has a flat base you should be ok.

Some time ago I removed IHS my 3000+ venice(ihs had good contact to core) so temps drop ~2c. and i get +~40Mhz more stable overclock.
My opinion: If your a64 cpu idlles 28-32c and stay under 42c 100% load with good cooler, there is no use remove IHS.

P.S. And don't put the blade that deep round the corners! Angry_Games doesn't like this poor Sempron at all.

thanks for the link to the video it worked like a charm and it was pretty easy...took it off and put it back in and its all fine, but i dont mind saying that i was scared shiatless that i f@@ked up...and i was wondering something else right now its 32c but feels 40c..should my cpu temp be around 38c-39c...i dont have air conditioning either

IHS removed successfully and HSF lapped to almost mirror finnish quality. Temperatures dropped significantly Idle & Load. Temperature in my appt is 31°c, computer idles between 35°c and 37°c, load at no more than 45°c. This is a 1Ghz overclock on a Venice CPU at 2.8 Ghz on a cheap Evercool air HSF. At 20°c inhouse temp, the CPU idles at 25°c - 28°c. In a cool basement, the cpu idles at 22°c to 25°c. Also, to consider that my graphics solution is overclocked and is generating a lot of heat in the box, aiming to get an ATI Silencer 5 rev 2 soon.

What does removing the IHS do to improve CPU temps? Just thought i'd ask. Also, would I only have to put thermal paste on the core? ( can this be done with P4 socket 478, if so, would any of you recommend it? ;p )

It puts the heatsink in direct contact with the CPU itself rather than a having a piece of metal between them.

And I hate all of you guys who are talking about removing you IHSs... it's making me really want to do it but I know I'd either break my CPU or cut my finger open, and I don't have the money to buy a new processor and I already have a nice scar on my wrist from when my PC last attacked me. Someone talk some sense into me before I try it. Please! :banghead:

GeneralDodo, this cant be done on presscots. If your pentium 4 is a northwood core, it can be done in the same way. Yes, you would only have to put thermal paste on the core.

On prescotts, the IHS is epoxied to the core. No way to get it off.

So what would the odds of me screwing this up be? How easy would it be for me to ruin my CPU and would it be worth the risk for someone without any money to spare on a CPU at the moment? (I'm saving up for a new graphics card because that's my biggest bottleneck)

how much faster does it make your average cpu go..???

i aint knocking the idea.. just questioning whether or not the "potential" gain is worth the definite risk.. he he he

i havnt done it and as yet dont plan to.. seeing a couple or so degrees drop of my cpu temps dont mean that much to me.. ??

but then again i aint a cpu speed freak.. thow thinking back i probably was in the past.. he he he
