IHS Removed Succesfully

sure why not after suffering for 3 years with dell components id say its worth trying altho i will try not to break it i probably will then again i might give my father that motherboard and cpu then i will take apart his im not sure what it is its like a 1.6 ghz p4 with no ht

Ok...I just found out that the Pentium D 820 is a Smithfield. Now, can I take the IHS off of that or not?

What i was thinking about doing when I buy my desktop pentium M adapter, was:

To remove the IHS on the prescott, I would find the dimensions of the core, and where it is on the chip, under the IHS, then sharpie lines around it.

Dangerous part: Dremel those lines so that the remains of the IHS fall off, but the part attached to the core is still on.
Then the side parts blocking access to the side of the cpu die are removed, and all I would have to do then is wedge in a razor, little by little, before the remaining small piece comes off. then just either scrape it off, or sand it down with fine sand paper, and woot, its off...

if someone has cutoff wheels, if you would like to send me a few, i'd be glad to give it a shot, pm me.

I think that doing it that way would work, but i take no responsibility to damaged processors by following the method above.

But does anyone know if the IHS can be taken out of the Smithfield Processors (Pentium D 8xx)?

I've seen it done before on smithies. Dont know what method they used though. It may have soldier like the prescotts.

well i dont know how much this helps but i dont think your gona get it off easily due to the core being surrounded by those capacitors or whatever they are heres a pic of a Smithfield without a ihs on it all tho if you look at the second image where i highlighted u notice on the first image u can faintly see what looks like the outline of an area where they had epoxy or whatever attaching a ihs or which looks more likely now that i look at it more that is the area that isnt covered by the ihs and the would probably put the epoxy all over those capacitor things to attach the ihs
