I currently have the AMD Radeon HD 4870 512mb

I would be getting the MSI Cyclone 4890 1GB (as seen on front page of TPU)

is the performance difference worth the price?

I would get another 4870. That would be a much bigger improvement.
Yep I agree, I have two 4890's (crossfire setup, but not for much longer) and at best it is just an average card, there is nothing that is ground breaking about it at all, except maybe the noise from the fans under load could break a noise level record.

Would'nt 2 4870 be noisier as well?

I have a 4890 and i set my fan @ 40 when gaming. It does'nt sound too bad.

Definitely just get another 4870. I have two myself and they are great.

And they wouldn't be any louder. My two 4870 1GB's are quieter than my MSI 4870 512MB. It will only be as loud as the loudest card (if that makes any sense :))

Why not wait for the new cards to come out, next few weeks I think? Even if you don't get one of those the release should make the prices on our current cards drop quite a bit and you can get one for even cheaper!

September 10th ATi is unveiling the HD5XXX series and they'll go retail in October. Thing is I don't expect much of a price drop on the HD4XXX series due to they are already at a low price. After the launch of the next-gen cards I would expect the 4 series to run out of stock quickly due to them no longer being supplied, much like the way things have happened in previous generations.

I agree with erocker. Get one now while you can. the 4870's are already crazy cheap as is.

P.S. - don't get a 1GB version if you already have a 512MB version... and get one with a non-reference cooler. They are better.

If you use the 512mb card as the second card rather then first then it doesn't make a difference.

( Seeing as the memory isn't used on any other cards other then the first)

I'm pretty sure that's correct.

I have a 4890 after having a nvidia 8800 and I am totally impressed with and my gaming os so smooth now. So saying about what I am about to say takes a lot. Just another 4870 those prices are awesome and then spend more money on the 5 series when they come out.

Sorry to say but that's incorrect. Would still be limited to 512MB.

Go with a 2nd 4870 Sky!
