i have to say my 20" monitor at 1680x1050 is absolutally lovelly it aint HD but still looks amazing and ive had it since crimbo and it still makes me pause in game an say hmmm now thats a nice picture (often resulting in getting shot haha)

Sitting away from the screen will give you almost the same view area with a large screen vs. sitting right in front of a smaller screen IMO. Overall the big screen in full Hi Def playing L4D just looks awesome.

the only problem with playing on the couch or sumit is getting somethng flat for ya mouse, you need a table or something like you said

i play on a 40" HDTV as well.

My solution is to use two chairs, one for mouse/pad one for keyboard.

To those who think the screens too big, dont forget you sit further back than you do from a normal screen.

Laser mouse can be used on most surfaces. I just directly use my mouse on my couch. I do get wrist strain sometimes if I am playing for more than an hour. Soon enough I will invest in a desk/table which will help.

32" here but still prefer my 17" 1440 x 900 ax it gives me better reaction time since I'm on a chair/table other than my bed

Well I can use my mouse on basically any surface, I have a Razer DeathAdder but yeah it's not comfortable to play and fps sitting on my bed or something, the rest is fine although I still prefer the chair/table setup.

I basically just dual-screen to watch a movie and do other stuff or just watch a movie on my bed...good for the girlfriend lol

Same situation here...she has a dislike for Left 4 Dead though...but I have a great time online with my friend, you get a good price if you buy 4 or more copies..at least it was like that...can't wait for the new stuff!

But yeah she liked games like Assassins Creed...fun cos I can play that from bed too..got an X360 controller which is great. Wouldn't imagine playing an mmo from bed..well depends what I'm doing.

Just to give you all alittle more detail. I am at least 8 feet away from my 46" HDTV, so I have no eye strain. I do get some eye strain with my 17" Sammy CRT because I am about 2 feet away from that.
I am thinking of getting a table just to put my G15 gaming keyboard and OCZ Equalizer mouse on. I am also left handed with the mouse. I really don't know how people can use the mouse with the right hand

Now when playing games like Oblivioun, I have no problems because it does not require constant quick reflexes.

I'd like to see you claim no eye strain in a couple of years.

1080 at 8ft is wasted. Your brain will indirectly force your eyes to 'strain' to 'see' the difference in quality, but never really find it.

If you were sporting a 52" or higher it would be a different story.

Luckily Hannah loves Left 4 Dead - she's so pleased that I bought her a new case, PSU, GFX card and RAM because she's now seeing Left 4 Dead the way I see it. She was pretty stoked at the difference when she was able to max out the texture quality and shader effects.

The funny thing is some weeks ago I bought the collector's edition of Sacred 2, she loved going through the artbook and all that...just not so much watching the game lol she's just...that dress looks nice and all that ya know...not really much interest in the game lol

The thing about Left 4 Dead I think she thought it was gonna be more gore-ish than it is...from the intro clip lol might have forced her to think it's a bit scary or whatever..yet it's not fun when you have other types of light ...like sun light. Love keepin my room dark while playing it...especially with my friends, some of them act too seriously on voice and that's quite fun lol

Such a great game, really looking forward to the new content. I've tried playing it on my 32" HDTV but the colour ratio sucks so my black is really black, can't fade between and give me decent greys.

Use to have a desk, real shitty one. The kind with walls for sides, annoying support at your feet, draws on the right and bookshelf thingo over the top. But it had a really surface area which i liked, because i like to have my elbows on the desk and still have plenty of room for the keyboard and monitor at a distance.

Anyways. I play chess, and had a chess table with about 70cm gap between the 4 legs.
Ripped the shelf, walls, everything apart on the desk and nailed the surface to the chessboard. Added some weight to it, and now use it with my G25. Ofcourse i went out and picked up an Acura NSX car seat to go with it all, but its perfect infront of the 52" Bravia or its likes.

I do play Left 4 Dead, aswell as many other games, i simply remove the steering wheel and gears to the side. The only way i can play before the bigscreen is in my setup thou. It does NOT conflict with my gameplay, it only enhances my pleasure. The only trick is to be comftable.

Point being, you need to get off that couch, get yourself a proper chair, close to the ground, but not too close ( so your legs stay comfy ), and build yourself a desk to go with your chair.

I havnt put wheels on my setup yet so i can drag it places around the house, but the rubber legs i put on it do the job just fine.

You have an actual racing seat? Thats pretty hardcore IMO.

As for eye strain, well games like L4D were equally designed to be played on a TV or a PC monitor so regardless of resolution the game should be playable for everyone. I play L4D on my 42" sometimes but I have to use my x360 controller. I just can't get comfortable with my mouse and keyboard while sitting at my couch.

I think Haytch has the right idea about sitting close to ground... but I think the most important part (for my anyway) is to have the mouse and keyboard above waist height but below the heart so your blood flow doesn't suffer.

I would have to respectfully disagree. 8 feet away is for 46" and above for the best possible viewing distance. Anything bellow 46” I agree.

Now as you can see by the picture and how my couch is positioned, I am not always 8 feet away, sometimes I sit a little closer. I can see a clear difference between 1080p and 480p. Even 720p, I can see a difference especially when watching HD DVD/BD movies and/or DVD up-scaled.
