Processor QuadCore AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 940, 3500 MHz
Motherboard Biostar TA790GX XE
Cooling fans and hs
Memory CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 800mhz 4-4-4-12
Video Card(s) Galaxy GTX 460 [retired -> XFX 8600 GTS (931/1917/2300)
Storage OCZ Vertex LE
Display(s) Acer G235H
Case Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
Audio Device(s) motherboard built in
Power Supply CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W
Software windows 7 ultimate 64
My memory latency before was 41ns, now it is 61.8ns. Seems like my memory has gotten slower somehow, perhaps I am not setting all the things right in my bios.

using motherboard Biostar TA790GX XE, and memory CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400).

When i used a abit an52 motherboard, I had the faster latency, but with the new board, it got slower. I set the timings to 4-4-4-12, and the bank cycle time (tRC) to 22. Runs at 800mhz.

Any ideas on how to get back the better latency?

How do you measure it ?

Bookmarked ur thread. Everywhere I read ppl have latancy under 70ns. I've got my 4x 1Gb dominators @ 950 6-6-6-18 with a latancy of 78.3 :wtf:

What settings do you have in memset?

6-6-6-18 are very high timings for Dominators at relatively slow speeds.

5-5-5-15 would be more acceptable, and depending on what kind of ICs you have you should be able to top 1GHz no worries. :)

I've got my current ram at 5-5-5-12 perf lvl4 and it only cost $15 a stick. You should be able to get a lot more speed out of dominators

I know. My board never managed to keep a 500 FSB stable though :p With my E8400 @ 3.8 I'm more than happy. Only my mem is giving me headaches.

Currently testing. Installed Memset, trying to scrape timings off bit by bit. 6-5-5-14 Stable @ the moment :)

(I apologize for stealing ur topic if u feel so, let me know and I'll open my own)

memset? I used everest to bench it for both the past, and now. As for settings, I use auto everything except for the 4-4-4-12, just like before. But i really don't get why the latencys went so high.

oh and @NGD, topic is about memory, so its all good :)

Search for memset in google. it'll let you tweak the sub timings, and more importantly the performance level, in windows.

61.8ns wow I got better latency than that with my old DDR2 533. You sure you didn't have it overclocked when you ran that memory test? Perhaps you have something running in the background? Maybe something was auto updating or scanning...

Your running that RAM in Unganged, aka single Channel.

Put each stick in the same colour slots, all in Orange or all in Green slots.

Better latency and a whole lot faster. :toast:

Heres a screenshot of my Everyest results, no subtiming tweaks, most of my daily stuff running...not bad at all but it could be a whole lot better.

ahhh, i see. I read up on ganged and unganged. found that ganged was for single threaded apps, while unganged was good for multi. For the purpose of games, I'm guessing ganged would serve me better. But as I set the memory to Ganged, I still get 61ns latency... any ideas?

Another question to close it up, would mixing ram be bad? I have CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) and OCZ Special OPS 2GB (2 x 1GB). Would running those 2 sets cause problems or be bad? NOTE: I have tested them to all run at the same bandwidth and timings.

Do you need more than 4GB of RAM?

I doubt it, and you could sell the OCZ Spec Ops kit and get a decent CPU cooler...because "fans and hs" doesn't sound too good to me.

If you do that, you could OC that PII some more, reduce latency even further by doing so AND gain a whole lot more bang for your buck. :rockout:

So i changed the settings to ganged memory, but still getting the same amount of latency, around 61.8ns. This is a great change from my older, slower cpu and motherboard (was at 41ns). same timings for memory, and running at 400mhz. I don't get this...

Your row cycle time, see if you can tighten it up some more. Maybe somewhere around 18.

but back when I had my athlon 64x2 4800+ cpu and abit an52 motherboard, the timings were the same exact.

what , i have value rams run at 5-5-4-8 @ 960 , latency read 60ms

Yeah, I dunno... RAM isn't really my thing yet I suppose

but i don't understand why my latencys went up after upgrading a motherboard and cpu only.Do quad cores work differently from dual cores in memory latency??
