Microsoft is threatening to withhold Windows 11 updates "if your CPU is old"

As an amusing side note the Verge can have that same guy who did the hilariously bad PC build before show us how to put together a "proper" Win 11 PC. Will he mount the power supply and RAM wrong again?

whatever it's not like they'll end the support of w10 the day after the release of w11, I don't see the issue

When you buy a new iPhone they will let you use it for 4-5 generations before they cut off support and make you buy something a little more recent. The only people who complain are the ones that can’t or don’t want to upgrade. And every 15 months or so they will throw them an update anyways. I am seeing some similarities here..

Hmm that sounds like what M$ did on windows 7/8 on the update after a restart it flashes get WiN10

Heck, they still occasionally make available security updates for W7!
Not if running an unsupported cpu. Ironically if they deem your cpu is "too new" for 7 they will lock you out of those too so this is not some radical new idea sadly.

If they withhold auto-updates, I assume we can still update by hand?

i had windows 11 installed twice so far and i am normally a fan of the latest and greatest.
but i guess i'll stick to win 10 until 2025

No, that's not what happens. Microsoft does not "lock you out". And my comment you quoted was about them "willfully withholding" security updates - which they don't do either.

I see what is happening here. It is very similar to MS bashers in the IT press and their lemming followers blaming Microsoft because the latest version of Windows does not support printing to someone's 5, 10 (or even 15 or 20) year old HP printer. It is NOT Microsoft's responsibility to ensure legacy hardware and software is supported in the latest generations of their OS.

It is not Microsoft's fault if HP, Epson, Lexmark fail to make compatible drivers, and instead push consumers to buy new printers. It is up to the hardware makers to develop and make available drivers that ensure compatibility.

It is not Microsoft's fault if your favorite software maker refuses to make an update, and instead forces you to pay for a new version. It is up to the software developers to make sure people's programs remain compatible by releasing updates to their programs.

But who do the MS bashers and their followers blame? Microsoft. Even Bill Gates still gets blamed and he hasn't run the company for years.

As far as cell phone companies, in my case where I am being forced to buy a new phone, 3G is going away and 5G is coming. My phone does not support 5G. Why isn't 5G backwards compatible to support the millions and millions of 3G "smart(?)" phones out there? As noted before, no doubt there are some who would just love and are itching to blame Microsoft for that too. ;) :kookoo:

Im pretty sure this is being misunderstood and blown out of proportin
how odd (jk this happens all the time)
my understanding is you cant upgrade from win 10 to 11 if your cpu is out of date
but updates works

Someone hasn't tried loading Windows 7 on a post kaby lake rig.

Yes, you can trick it, but it very particularly locks you out from Windows Update past a point.

I mean, don't take my word for it. I'm sure you can find news articles on it. It was well covered during the 10 migration.

The rest of your post is a nonsensical rant about MS-bashers which does not apply to me, at all.

Show me an actual Microsoft source, then I will believe it.

However TPU almost never gives a source, would be nice if they did provide sources.

When I worked here, we were required to list a source. This article does as well, you just aren't reading the whole article link.

Source is listed for that article below, as HotHardware:

You know, I'd understand if they were afraid of older architectures made testing/interoperability a nightmare, or made optimizations impossible, since you need to support too many archs; so threatening limited support for Zen+ is fine for me at least. But killing support for the i7 7700K when the 10100 is slower and the very same arch makes little sense ... is the difference between Z97/Z170 and H410 really that big?

Thats ok MS I will with hold your W11 till W10 is old.

I hope this won't become a bad habit, Microsoft pushing people to buy new hardware every time they release a new OS

It seems you have forgotten, they've done it every single time since Windows 95.

Only now they are being more serious with the requirements intead of throwing excessively optimistic ones at you.

Like it was when Microsoft used a backdoor method of forcing folks to "Move On" to newer OS versions with Win 10 vs Win 7 by disabling certain features like USB with Win 7 ran with newer hardware.
Long proven to be a problem created by MS themselves to assert (FORCE) Win 10 on everyone.

That's one big reason why I'm on Linux now and I ain't going anywhere near Windows anymore.

And this illustrates the point about biased MS bashings from MS haters as it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of MS withholding security updates for W11 and older CPUs - which we don't even know if that is true, or not. :(

Why are people not blaming the bad guys for putting us in the security situation we are in? Or the antimalware software makers for failing to stop the badguys, as they whined and cried to Congress and EU, that it was their job to do?

Because there will always be assholes trying to game-the-system; their job is to make it financially viable to do so!

On the flip-side, if this secure-boot and encryption key system is so important to Windows Security, why did Microsoft allow TPM 1.2 to ship so fucking broken? They wasted five years of existing chips, so now they're going to pretend these older implementations don't even exist?

I believe @lynx29 agrees with you.

I still use Win 10 for work laptop. But yeah, I have had no issues gaming on my Linux Mint gaming laptop, pretty happy overall so far.
