Moderation Too Strict

That seems fair to me although one would hope jokes would be relevant to the topic or reply at hand.
My experience says otherwise when they got removed. If on topic, I agree, they could be left.

And there is a lot of member brown-nosing giving the mods
I mean, it ain't brownosing here. I think they do a thankless job and are doing fine.

Perhaps we should start a new thread called Mod Love Lounge?

LOL, "brown-nosing"... I like a post depending on its content, not who posted it.

Doubt it would happen. Just like the rest of the interwebs, especially dealing in tech, it is so much easier to bash whatever isn't going your way as it attracts attention. This thread is a good instance of that. Look at social media, which is typical of much of what happens here too. I hate this or that, this company sucks because....most times it is due to a lack of knowledge of the subject or failure to read the manual (guidelines in the instance of TPU), but hate is spread faster than love, everywhere.

There is sort of that love lounge behind closed doors, as mods will help others through the tougher times in moderation. Not all of it is points and move on, most times it is a 2 or 3 day series of hatemail in the PMs from whoever got the points, and most refuse to admit they may have crossed the line, white, gray, black, or otherwise.

TBH I have never seen power trips from mods. Even when I had major conflicts with members, there was good reason, and as said before, if they (or I) were on a power trip, W1zz stepped in, or the super mods, and put things back on track.

I just like good people. That at the moment, includes the mods, IMO. It also includes the majority of members here.

No problem! Tell ya what, we'll make it a part of your sign-on bonus! Up to 5 death threats in your first 90-days. ;)

The places I could see a topic like Internet Tough Guy going in the Lounge... oh boy. Nightmare fuel. lol!

I'm sorry, after being a mod at SA back in the day and my own twisted sense of humor.... forward me all the death threats and internet tough guys to troll into oblivion though.

And just to add:

We also know where you live :)

Billings MT.

My IP should show a mixture of Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Missoula occasionally I believe.

I was just kidding.. but yeah :)

Agreed. I can be a bit of a joker at times, but never had my silliness deleted (some other things, yes, but that's besides the point).

You mean you AREN'T sending me help?

*drowns in garbage*

(ok maybe the "garbage" is PC parts but you get the drift)

A big oart of what happens here on the forums is users can't see deleted content.
If they can, they just quote them and continue arguing - new members will sign up (often the same people originally infracted with burner accounts) just to keep the arguments flowing.
The only solution there is to delete the entire thing, and that leads to some 'innocent' posts being removed as well.
Never with infractions or bans, but that still upsets some people who just immediately decide they've been unfairly silenced and that any action against them, must be action for whoever they were talking to.
Those people then tend to get angry at anyone who posts 'similar' content to them and stir up trouble, just because they feel wronged about something that never happened.

Just like with my 9 year old kid, context matters.
Someone saying "what the fuck" such as in a reply to this
God forbid if one makes a sexist joke
Because what the fuck, dude. This is a tech website, not 4chan. Asshole behavior doesn't belong here, period.
Telling someone to get F'd is the same word in entirely different context - it's about using the word as a descriptor vs actively trying to insult someone. See how your 'humour' doesn't fit the website as a whole?

Some people try to toe the line with the rules, much like bad-faith negotations.
They know their actions are against the spirit of the rules but try very carefully to stay just within them so they can do what they want and cry innocence at the end of it, such as quoting someone else using the same word (In a different place and context)

Swearing in the general nonsense thread as a descriptor? No ones been infracted for that. Chasing another forum member in every thread they post in, harassing them with polite language? Yeah, you can be told off for that despite not breaking any easy to describe rule.

As W1zzard once said a long time ago, this forum isn't a democracy - it's his personal property. Warped views on "freedom of speech" do not apply as he is not your government, and this is not government owned property in any country.

(Freedom of speech is claimed by a lot of people as the only way they can "speak their mind" without being shut down, oblivious to the fact they're abusing a protection meant for those in need of protection FROM them)

Not to mention, freedom of speech can be exercised without insulting others. They're not exclusionary concepts. All that's needed is a little impartiality, which shouldn't be a problem on a tech forum, one would naively think.

Ehhhh..... That would wind up being something like what's over at LTT:
one of the threads of all time - Off Topic - Linus Tech Tips

It's not a bad thing for the mods to have a place to kick back and interact with us like they would prefer to but at the same time I'm not sure if such would be fitting for TPU.
While It works for LTT, that doesn't mean it would work here too but at the same time what TPU "Is" and will become is decided by those running the show here.

There is a thing called decorum. Without it a place becomes difficult to have real discussions especially when people have passionate and opposing points of view.

Not trying to bait or asert anything other than what I am about to say. If you make a joke, and a few get to see it and laugh, but is later removed due to not being on topic, what is the real harm to anything other than your post count? As an ex-mod, Im sure, unless a member is a repeated jokester without contributing at all, no points get involved, so they continue life as usual on TPU?
You of all people know how much everyone jokes around. They're just not in the forums enough to see it.

You need to understand something about the Herr Obermeister's culture here @skizzo . You are new here.
Absolute nonsense! They've been here since Sept 2019. This is Dec 2023. That's more than 4 years. Please do better math.

Some of my posts in this thread were 'moderated' (deleted), so I think it best I bug out.
Don't take that too personally. There have been A LOT of comment deletions. I've been lurking. Normally, threads like this disappear shortly after having been created. I think TPU staff are letting it ride because it's mostly been civilized and reasonable conversation and they want to get a feel for how the forum users see they're doing the job(both points my personal theory).

I think it would work here, with some careful shepherding. Keep in mind though, TPU is much bigger than LTT and much more involved to manage.

THIS!! Very well said!

I think this as well. In my head space it's not a us vs. them kind of mentality but more of we are all standing in the same circle of life here that happens to be on someone else's property ... there might be a small corner on that property for fight club but we aren't supposed to talk about that. :nutkick:

Agreed - It could be managed and the fact mods would be in it that would be a good thing.

One of my points I want to make is a simple one:
Mods want to be viewed in a positive light and interact like we do among the rest of us BUT there is still the thing about the job they have too.
They are human too and as long as we keep that in mind any interaction(s) as things are now or however will be fine, but we all know you also have that "Certain few" that love starting something and just being on the edge the whole time.

None of us are 100% well behaved all the time but the staff I'm sure knows who "They" are or can spot them and certainly know what to do about them if required.

Yeah, it's not us vs. them in the forums until someone expresses that they don't feel like Nvidia is a criminal organization and Jensen Huang is a profane manifestation of Beelzebub on this Earth.

I'll admit I have to do some research to understand those references before I can have an accurate reply.

Or that, *shock horror* ! AMD isn't perfect, has done anti-gamer moves, and is out for as much of your money as they can get, just like the others.

That'll for sure start a fallacy of relative privation argument.

I'm sure this is one the mods are well aware of, possibly the most tribal tribes (gfx vendors) in tech atm.

Lol. 2019 is a newbie. Tell me exactly when general nonsense got moved to generalnonsense_net-this_site_no_longer_exists. Read and think a little deeper before kneejerk commenting. My grandmother used to say “first, look” “and think” “before crying” (or screaming). Although she did use a different language not English.

And writing “math” on a European website should get you infraction points, nay, banstick even! Lol

Hey folks!

This thread's all about you guys sticking it to the mods. Please stay on topic and don't start turning on each other. That's beyond satire.

Speaking as a moderator on another site: If you feel things have gotten more strict and wonder why, it's because you didn't take a moment to consider how the dynamics have changed. The number of bots, guerilla marketers, etc. has increased dramatically in recent years. The need for policing all of the shenanigans is commensurate.

The only thing moderators can do when this type of typical groussing starts up is -
