#1 complaints I hear when suggesting people switch to firefox.

"It takes a long time to open"
"It's not really any safer, it just protects against different things"
"It's different"
"You can only view some pages in IE"

As for me, I've been happily using Firefox for over a year now without any notable problems.

dude, dont be funny, i've been using firefox since 0.8...

i was just SAYING that with this newly discovered security breach you'll be alot more safer with firefox! (as you would be in most cases), since with firefox you have to activley download the wmf file in order to get infected, while with IE its enough to view the file.

also, update: if you're using google desktop, uninstall it right now as it too is proving very vulnerbale to this new exploit!

Well I definitely hate IE (WHERE IS IE7), not only for security but because it is literally less stable than Firefox. No tabbed browsing either. I mean sometimes, even on microsoft websites, IE will freeze and never get the page or even say it has an error. And when you play flash games (on certain computers) it does that "IE has encountered an internal error and needs to shut down" thing. When you're playing a game, that is THE MOST annoying thing it can do. I have to manually shut it down. Firefox has never done that. But my big complaints about firefox are:

1. Need to download new plugins, and not all plugins are supported for Firefox
2. Windows Media player videos suck in it, if you scroll the screen turns black and you have to restart the video
3. Interface could be better, it's just a ripoff of IE's. If it looked glassy like Vista or something, then I'd be happy.

all the plugins are already in IE and you can't do windows updates with firefox... i use both though because there are some awesome things you can do with firefox, like as soon as i click the myspace bookmark at the top of my ff browser it logs me in automatically etc

You can download different themes for Firefox. You're not stuck with the default. Find one you like and use it; if you like glassy try Aquatint its rather glassy, and I know there are others if you browse around. That would probably fix a 1/3 of your problems.

I can't really think of any plugins you "need" some are really nice though. Firefox will run fine without any and just the normal updates, and there is nothing wrong with updates; IE should probably have more of those.

The majority of websites I have not gotten to load are Microsoft websites. I can't think of any non-Microsoft related websites that I couldn't load with Firefox; though I'm sure the next post will be a list of websites that won't load.

And if you just hate both IE and Firefox, than there are other web browsers out there to try too. Like Opera and Avant.

When I

1. Can Install nearly any program I want on linux (GIMP is nice. But give me my photoshop!)
2. Don't have to fight for three hours to install my nvidia drivers
3. No longer have to compile programs myself (if there were clear instructions it would be as big of a deal. Not all of us are born with the instinct of compiling)

Only then will linux be a viable alternative. It's a short list, Perhaps it will happen soon?

I see no reason to use linux. With the amount of knowledge it takes to make Linux useful to an advanced computer user, you would be better off with windows.

Linux is good if:
You dont play games
You dont need MSOffice
You dont need photoshop
You dont need compatibility with most things

Openoffice doesnt count. You can use it for for personal applications, but if your in a business enviroment, you cant write something up in Openoffice with any worthwhile formatting that will work with word. And there is still no viable alternative to Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.

The gimp isnt as good as photoshop. Nuff said.

$80 is a small price to pay for something that you know will work.

Ive been running SP2 since it came out, for about a year now with no formats. I dont run antivirus, and just use spybot to "immunize" against spyware. I might occasionally get a tracking cookie, but thats it.

I agree. Linux is nothing more than a novelty when it comes to the majority of uses.

You will never be able to use it to get updates, Windows update uses Active X controls which ONLY IE has. Just use Firefox for your everday browser, and open IE when you need to update. Not that hard, and much safer. These days it seems at least every other security risk is based from IE.

Last I checked this actually isnt an IE flaw. Its a WMF exploit, which firefox is vulnerable aswell, because its a deep exploit from within windows.

Windows itself is the problem.

Poor windows sucke....err.... users....

ahaha..

/me hugs his mandriva linux install

All ive heard about WINE is half assed DirectX emulation, not good for any graphically intense games. I would love to be proven wrong with benchmarks or some tests, but that wont be happening.

If you are going to mess with Linux just to run Wine, whats the point? :wtf:

Last time I tried messing with Linux was Red Hat 9. What a pain in the ass.

On the other hand ive played with Ubuntu live cd, and it works pretty well. Didnt have any SATA drivers though.

Hmm I just found some benchmark numbers for wine vs windows, and its not bad, Though they only benched DX 8.1 games.

Linux may one day be good, just not yet (for me at least)

No windows vulnerabilities. Hence the basis of this THREAD. ;)
