Hey there,

Over the past few months, I have been having an odd issue with my PC. It is specifically with the mouse. During random times, my mouse will begin to stutter. It almost looks like it's teleporting rather than gliding, making it hard to control. This has only been occurring recently, and I assumed it was an issue with my wireless mouse at the time. I assumed my mouse may have been on, or close to the same wireless 2.4G channel as my modem, so I bought a new mouse that utilizes Bluetooth built into my motherboard. After buying this new mouse, the issue still persists, eliminating it out of the equation entirely. This stuttering can happen with something as simple as Netflix running while scrolling Facebook, or Gmail, but it also happens when I am working. By career I am a programmer, and on any given day I can have around 20+ chrome tabs open, VSCode, Netbeans, Putty, FileZilla and so on. 98% during this time under this load, the stuttering does not happen. It seems to come out at random. Sometimes while working, sometimes while just browsing chrome. Sometime I'll go a week or so before it starts stuttering again. It only seems to last in short bursts, no longer than about 5 minutes long before it goes back to normal. My specs are not low-end by any means, as I need to have a pretty beefy computer in order to maintain top efficiency while developing. No wasting time waiting for stuff to load/compile.

Processor: Intel I7-10700K
Motherboard: MSI Z490 MPG Gaming Carbon Wifi
Ram: 32GB HyperX Fury @ 3000MHz
SSD: 2X Samsung 860 Evo 1TB
HDD: 1X Seagate Barracuda 1TB
GPU: Gigabyte 3080 Vision OC
Cooling: All of the cooling is Custom-Looped. Processor rarely climbs above 40C, GPU 50-60C.

I have the latest BIOS, Latest drivers from all the manufacture's websites. Latest Nvidia Drivers. Latest Windows Updates,

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I have wiped windows a month ago or so, issue still persisted across a fresh install.

I am out of ideas as to what is causing this. All I can think is perhaps overclocking? I do have Intel Turbo-Boost enabled. Base Speed is 3.79GHz, but the processor usually runs at about 4.6GHz while still keeping cool.

My processor can be sitting at 3% utilization, GPU 4% Utilization, Memory 32% Utilization, and yet the mouse will periodically and randomly stutter. Heck, it's even stuttering right now as I type this to move my cursor to make edits, and I only have 1 chrome tab open, this page.

Does anybody have the brightest idea as to what is going on here?

Could it be how my tubing is laid out?

What mouse and how close is the wifi/Bluetooth antenna to the mouse?

yeah what mouse? have you tried another usb ports, trying usb 2.0 not usb 3.0
have you checked any usb setting in your bios just incase you miss something?

First Mouse was a Logitech G305. The Wifi dongle had an extender, so I'd literally have it on my desk not 10CM from where I was moving my mouse. The second one I just bought is a Corsair Harpoon RGB. I am purposely using Bluetooth to try to eliminate my 2.4G modem out of the problem. Still no change.

what about usb setting on bios?

what about usb setting on bios?
Technically as of now, I am not using USB for this new mouse. My motherboard has Bluetooth Built in, so I opted to use that instead to eliminate USB out of the problem as well. Same issues on Bluetooth as well. Perhaps it could be my graphics lagging, making it look like it's my mouse? I played a game once to see if this was the issue, but the game itself didn't lag (150 FPS ish), only the mouse movement did.

Are you using the Bluetooth/wifi antenna for the motherboard? In my experience, bt can be wonky if you have something like a router close.

Yeah, the motherboard came with 2 long antennas, They are spread so 1 faces left, 1 faces right, pointed upwards. My modem is probably about 2 feet away.

Just try turning the router/modem off and see if the problem stops.

Just on my own systems this year i've seen similar for a bunch of unrelated causes:

1. Had to move USB receiver for mouse a lot closer
2. Disabled a setting on my TV causing network spam to make games stutter
3. Mechanical disk drives powering up/down (mine had a faulty power cable)
4. probably something i forgot (Oh some mice have issues with polling at 1000Hz in 11)

I think that would be a problem, when my psu start to fail, the mouse and some programs start to stutter or freezing. After pch and dram cotroller voltage drop, it only back to normal when system restarts.

Open hwmonitor and leave it behind while you use the pc, if the problems pop out, check the min and max voltages of the whole pc

I am currently using an EVGA Supernova 750G. I will leave hwmonitor running today and report back.

Get a pic of the label from the psu please (that has the specs)

IMX, with 10, Windows is known to have "keep lagging until I reboot" syndrome, clearly a software problem in my case and probably most cases.
If it was an SSD failing, it will feel more like an HDD from 2005 and/or you get new Windows errors in the event log relating to file corruption.

Mine stutters if it's too far away from the PC or if there is stuff in between it and the mouse.

Okay. After running HWMonitor, the numbers are interesting. I opened up a game, played it for a while.

Gaming:
+12V:
- Min: 11.56V
- Most of the time: 11.65V
- Max: 11.7V

+3.3V:
- Min: 3.23V
- Most of the time: 3.25V
- Max: 3.32V

Working:
+12V:
- Min: 12.230V
- Most of the time: 12.240V
- Max: 12.250V

+3.3V:
- Min: 3.324V
- Most of the time: 3.325V
- Max: 3.325V

When I closed my game, and opened up my workspace I use for work, my voltages changed.

My +12V increased to 12.240V and my +3.3V went to 3.324V. This is when my mouse started lagging and stuttering.

Here is a picture of the PSU:

Hi Bryce,

About a couple of months ago, I'm experiencing the same behaviour. I have a Logitech G Pro and using the wireless dongle at no more than 10 cms from it. One thing I have tried is that if I switch the mouse to wired mode by plugging in the usb cable when stuttering is happening, it goes away. The stuttering is totally random, there are days which I don't experience the issue at all. When it comes it's usually a 3-4 minutes then goes away.
I have an AMD setup, 5800x and Asus Rog B550-F Wifi. My PSU is almost new (CM V850 Gold v2). What we have in common is the graphic card brand and our motherboards are Wifi, so I'm thinking it could be related with the Wifi antena, I have it plugged in but I'm not using it. I will try unplugging it. Other things I may think of are Windows Updates or any specific software running in the background. I have experienced this mouse stuttering mostly when navigating or at desktop, so the CPU load is very low. I don't think this is related to load.

i have had 7 or so G502's over the past however long, & the most recent one i bought, i accidentally bought the wireless version. i figured it wasnt a big deal, since ive heard great things about logitech wireless , but i found it laggy & glitchy. ive never had issues with the wired versions, & once i switched off the wireless & plugged in the wire, it worked just as smooth as the past G502's ive had. since i have never used it in wireless mode, which is a pita, since i paid an extra 30% or so for the wireless tech.

disabling windows mouse 'accuracy' or whatever it is never a bad idea ime
hopefully that might help

"so I bought a new mouse that utilizes Bluetooth built into my motherboard"

Oh shit how did i miss that
BLUETOOTH IS SHIT FOR MICE. JUST DONT. DONT.

Use the proper USB receiever, or use it wired.

BT is only really good for devices that dont have a choice, like smart TV's, phones and tablets.

So, update:

I don't believe it's just my mouse that's stuttering. It's difficult to tell, I think it almost acts like an illusion. I don't think my mouse is stuttering, but rather my whole pc, but I only notice it when I am moving my mouse? Does this make sense or am I just losing it over here :rockout:

I'm experiencing the same and I don't think is the whole PC that is stuttering, it's just the mouse cursor. Have you tried to plug it in when the stuttering ocurrs? at least when I plug it in the stuttering stops. I have a Logitech mouse, I believe you have other brand.

Input latency can do that

Are you guys on windows 11? there was reports of that happening with 1000Hz mice

Update:

So, I have replaced my old 750W power supply with a brand new EVGA 1000G. I must say, it has stopped stuttering, meaning:
