Alright i need some help here ive upgraded my entire computer and its not working. I replaced everthing but the computer case itself.

I turn my computer on and it gets to the post screen and a bit further then just shuts down, if i power it on again it turns off even faster than last time, now if i wait about 30 secs or so it will go as far as it did the first time which is right after the post screen and power off.

I have tried both power supplies i have and it made no difference unless both have gone bad.

Specs:

Power Supply: Antec Neo HE 550 Watt(Dual Video/Pci-E Support)
Mother Board: Abit IL8 Series
Processor: Lga 775 Intel Pentium D 3.4 Ghz 800 Mhz Fsb[Dual Core, 64 Bit, Virtuazilation]
Memory: 2x DDR2 667 Crucial Balstics 512 MB
Hard Drive: Westren Digital 250Gb Sata
Video: Saphire Radeo X1800 GTO2 512 MB[Limited Edition]
Other: Floppy Drive, Dvd Drive, CD Burner

I have tried to go back to the source i took everthing out of my computer excluding the processor mother board and psu. It then just beebs at me loudly and then turns off at about the smae time it was with everthing plugged in which is about 10 secs.

My dad works with computers for a living and ive been around them all my life and neither of us can figure out whats wrong.

Oh, i had a 460 Watt Power Supply, butt it wasnt able to support my video card so i had to get a higher one, which is the 550 watt im using now.

My old computer turned off during a lightning storm well nothing was damagedand 15 min later when the storm was over it worked fine. But the 460 psu was in there at that time. With the new mother board in i have switched out both new and old power supplies and it does the same thing.[This is not the same mother board or any part that i had during this storm.]

I even went as far as moving the computer to a different room thats on a differnt part of the circuit breaker to see if maybe it was not getting enough power, this was not the case either.

My only guess is that the 460 psu isnt stong enough to support everthing or has developed an eltircl problem slowly after the storm, but then the new psu should ahve taken care of that on a completly new system, unless i managed the 550 psu i got from bestbuy had a short in it and is bad to. In that case i got like 10 days to return it to bestbuy.

Anybody have any idea waht is going on or why it is doing this?¿? Any help or suggestions are greatly apperciated.

Thanks in Advance....

Frustrating... from a first read, it appears to be a heat problem, can you get into the system monitoring screen in the Abit BIOS and look at temps/stuff before it shuts down?

I know you have been around computers a lot but I just want to cover the easiest thing possible.
Did you connect your 24 pin connector and the 4 pin connector to power the CPU on the motherboard.

Also, what kind of PSU do you have. If it has multiple rails, one rail might be dead. Also, not all 550W PSUs are good. Some have low voltage on the 12V rail. So which one is also important.

I can get into the bios for about 5 secs before it turns off. Not sure why it would be a heat problem nothins hot.

The 460 has a 20 bin with a 24 pin adapter came with it yes its attached, the 550 has the 24 pin connector, i connected both times with both psu, and yes both times ive connected the 4 pin ive tried with and without on both psu. When i dont connect the 4 pin it does not turn off, but then i added the video card and it dosent work.

I mentioned that because you said "if i power it on again it turns off even faster than last time now if i wait about 30 secs or so it will go as far as it did the first time" - seems to indicate a heat problem but anything is possible - too bad you can get to the monitoring screen in bios.

True but i have also tried doing this with the heatsink and fan off on my old procceror before i go the new 1 today and it did the same thing with or without the heat sink and fan.

sounds like psu is bad could also be a ram issue

Little chance is a kind of short-circuit. Dissamble the complete computer and look for little wire which hanging around where they not should be ;-) Also check ALL cables if they are damaged somewhere, hot tip are the connectors (male and female).
Some years ago, a mysterios error in a friends PC could be solved in checking the above. In that case it was a ide-cable, a wire was slightly damaged and sometimes it touched the metal and sometimes not.

I love how every one in this thread has thier own idea. Look if you have the 4 pin and 24 pin pluged in your good to go. Check to see if the fan is pluged into Fan1, You have your dual channel memory in the right slots.

What you need to really decibe is the kind of beeps you are getting. Plus are you sure your motherboard is a good one?

ITs not the ram becasue it still shuts off even if the ram isnt in the computer right now there is only the mother board, processor/heatsink & fan, and the psu connected, and it still shuts off in about 10 secs. ITs a load high pitched beeplast about 2 ses and comes on again every 2 secs and does this till it decideds to power down again, there is no ide cable plugged in so it cant be that.
-----------
Mother board is fine far as i can tell, it dectes everthing inculding my dual channel ram when i put it in tells me bout the processor i can see this for about 3 secs or so when it gets past the bios the abit screen it dectes my hard, ram, processor, video, cd & dvd as well as my floppy drive when i plug em in but it jsut turns off, ive restarted it and watched the screen enough time to check that out to.
-----------
Pins are right ive checked that so amny times its rediculious, and ive ahd my dad check it as well, ive read the book, andfor my mobo and my psu and puggled and replugged all 3 ways they can be nurmous times to make sure im not doing that wrong.

1long, 2 short/ Video adapter error Either video adapter is bad or is not seated properly. Also, check to ensure the monitor cable is connected properly.

Repeating (endless loop) Memory error Check for improperly seated or missing memory.

1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card.

High frequency beeeps while running Overheated CPU Check the CPU fan for proper operation. Check the case for proper air flow.

Repeating High/Low CPU Either the CPU is not seated properly or the CPU is damaged. May also be due to excess heat. Check the CPU fan or BIOS settings for proper fan speed.

You did the right thing. STRIP BACK THE COMPUTER TO THE MINIMUM.

Put the mainboard on a table top... (wooden). Hook up the power supply. Connect the VDU. (I hope you have on-board graphics). NOTHING ELSE CONNECTED. Turn on.

What happens? Some mainboards will give a diagnostic even without the CPU. Switch off.

Check the manual/MB website.

Now install the CPU. Switch on.

What happens?

Either your MB is faulty. Or your CPU is faulty. Or they are not compatible. Does the board have the right BIOS? Do you or a friend have another CPU you can stick in? Switch off.

If you get this far, MB + CPU working, now install the stuff into the case and check still OK before going further.

I'm following along here, but I've read many "negative" motherboard reviews on NewEgg that related to insuficient default memory voltages... perhaps that is the problem - providing you can get into the bios and adjust before it reboots.

I say, dear mate - computers don't like it when there's no RAM in them ;)

PUT RAM IN THE COMPUTER silly

Things you must have to boot, one stick of memory at least, CPU with fan, and a video card to see post.

I bet your beep changes, and we can solve this.

Im not trying to get the computer to boot im trying to jsut get it to stay on longer than 5-10 secs.

Heres what i did i removed the motherboard from the case on my counter sitting on an anti static bag.

With just the motherboard, processor, and psu, i power it on beebs 5 long times at regular intervals, and then powers off after about 10 secs.

I do the same thing again adding 1 stick of ram, this time it does one short beeb and then powers off in about 10 secs.

Man, not to poke but what other things were missing from the system that time?
