Need help with my brother's CPU

So wait....you're facepalming because me and my brother have both used free programs and been burned? HEAVEN FORBID DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT PC'S HAVE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES. I'm not here to ask if Norton is the cause, or what you think is the best anti virus. I'm asking what I can do to check what the cause is. I'll see if he's willing to try disabling it without internet on later. I'll check GPU temps later, and I've got CPU-z ready for whatever info, if any, is useful. I'm not here to argue on what's the best option.

I'll see if he's willing to try disabling it without internet on later

What are you guys afraid of? That your computer is going to get infected by just being connected to the internet? Your computer cant get a virus from ONLY being connected to the internet(your DNS server), you would have to goto a bad website.

I don't have any antivirus's installed on my computer. You wont get a virus if you only goto trusted sites. This computer(one in my specs) has never had a virus. The reality is that you will still get virus's even with an antivirus installed when you goto bad websites and its still the best option to reinstall the OS when a virus gets into a computer because you can never get it out, you may cripple it but it will likely take parts of the OS with it and make the system unstable.

Whats the power supply in you brothers comp? It might be the PSU not giving enough power or dying.

No manufacturer listed for mine. Only NVidia. Now, how do I remove the driver? Cause it's not showing up on Add/Remove programs, even with 'updates' checked....

I think he got one of these 2 problems (or both) heat & lots of shits in his computer as for psu i doubt it but then again could be the psu because it's overheat for having to much dusts in it...

I clean up lots of computers & some repares & you wouldn't believe how much dusts i can get out of the PSU alone

Actually, it just says it'll remove em when I restart, and reinstall the new ones...so....Plus my bro wants on so...I gotta go. I'll just hope it worked. Push comes to shove, I'll do what you do, or do system recovery....

I tend to agree with your point Bro that it kills computers! Seen it happen on several of my friends' laptops that came preinstalled with Norton 360. Was'nt sure at first with the cause of hang ups and lagging till I saw that Norton eats up a lot of CPU and Memory resources in the Task manager! What I did was uninstalled Norton and installed Kaspersky IS instead! Problem fixed for my friend and laptop runs faster! :) Im just not quite sure why Norton runs that way though!

It runs that way because of crappy programming.

Me like you & others are telling him how much crap Norton is ...but hey! if they want to keep it they'll be the only 2 guys in the world still using Norton...

Amen to that! And its really different strokes for different folks!:)

System restore is another shitty crap but this one from M$ , i always disable this in windows most of the time it's doesn't even work & you're back to square one...

Simple for me If i ever got any kind of problem(s) or virus that can't be fix then... i simply format & reinstall all , that does a much better job than M$ shitty system restore :D

If it doesnt list it then just install the correct driver.
Shouldnt cause you any problems.

No offense, but I think this is bad advice.

Formatting and reinstalling is usually not the better option for most people. Sometimes, a system restore magically fixes everything. (At least try system restore to different dates, as far back as possible before formatting.) If there's a virus, it could usually be fixed with an anti-virus program or spyware program (there is amazing help on the internet from a couple sites.. Majorgeeks is one of the, I think). All of those volunteers are true, humble geniuses and dedicate so much time helping out with these problems.

Mobo driver installed. Don't really see a difference. Now, I have CPU-Z.
I believe I have GPU-Z as well. WHAT info should I list to see if anythings not working right? Because Im tired of this CPU running at 10-20 FPS on a game it should have at least 30-40 on....

Norton 360 is most probley a factor in his poor gaming experince, I would Uninstall it stright away, Heres the link youll need it to remove your norton product http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

It really is a shame that you won't take our advice on 'free products' as we here at tpu know our stuff our computers are our pride and joy, we would never point you in the wrong direction, I know for a fact that Superantispyware is a bloody good program and definitley wont screw with your computer!!

in short Norton 360 if CRAP!!!! Having this program on his computer makes me wonder what other crap loading on startup on his pc?

What operating system is he using XP 32 bit or 64bit?

I have to agree. People around here are pretty knowledgable. SuperAntispyware is a very solid program. There's many others that are good too. Comodo is rated #1 at www.matousec.com as a complete security solution (Firewall + Antivirus). Best of all, it's also free. There's also PC Tools Firewall, it's free aswell and rated very high. Outpost Security provides a free version of they're firewall again highly rated. There's far better choices for you that are less resource heavy and lighter on the wallet. Cheers!

Edit - I should also add all of these programs outside of SuperAntispyware have both 32 and 64bit flavours. Not entirely sure if SuperAntispyware has gotten around to a 64bit exe yet.

XP so 32 bit. And it's not my choice, it's his. I also dont generally have many issues. But I seriously doubt Norton alone would drag it down that much. Is there anything else I can check with CPU-Z or GPU-Z or w/e? I'm not saying you guys don't know...but he refuses.

Yes! it works on 64bit OS no problem got it as always on my Win7 Ultimate 64bit

You would be surprise some times... just uninstall Norton & do a good clean up ,restart & try the games again if no differences reinstall Norton ....simple enough.

Yeah start GPU-z & see what it give you as clock speed & pci-e & most important the temps click on Sensors tab & check Log to file & continue refreshing this screen...(see pic)

After playing/exit the game go in your documents & find the GPU-z sensor log & open it up & see what max temp you card is reaching...

You have gone out of your way to help your brother get his computer up to speed, you came to the right place to find that advise. :D

However if your brother is too ignorant to listin let him suffer, he should take our/your advise and if he dosn't its his own fault that his computer runs games like a rotten apple!!!!!

Sometimes it is easier just to type "dxdiag" into the Run Dialog
and you will get a screen like this
Capture071383.jpg

it will tell us your memory MOBO maker and Cpu info

What they are trying to tell you and your brother that Norton 360 is simply a draw on your PC specially when playing online It alone can add +25 to your ping
Norton registry tools do not work as well as cCleaner IMHO
Just because you defrag once a month does not always mean it's done all the way sometimes you may need to run it a few times to get everything

If the PC is 2 years old you most likely need to replace the CPU TIM and dust
you could also download CPU-Z HW Monitor so we could see all of your temps
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

OH and he is some good software for screen captures
http://www.techpowerup.com/tpucapture/

Plus once you allow spyware Norton will never ask you again SO... sometimes it's better to get a second opinion such as use another program to hunt them down for you..
there is no harm in checking you can always use another program to check and uninstall it and reinstall norton

By Clock speed, do you mean GPU/Default Clock? Both are 675.
Is the PCI-E info the 'Bus interface' info?
--------
GPU Core Clock - 675.0 MHz
GPU Memory Clock - 915.0 MHz
GPU Shader Clock - 1700.0 MHz
GPU Temperature - 58.0*C
Fan Speed - 35 %
Memory Used - 29 MB
GPU Load - 0%
Memory Controller Load - 0%
Video Engine Load - 0%
---------------
That's without me going on one of the games. My bro was on Megaman X8 earlier though...

Here's the info from the DXDiag
-----------------
OS: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
System Manufacturer: NVIDIA
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS V6.00PG
CPU: Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 3328 MB RAM
Page File: 687MB Used, 4528MB available

Small page file.......

I would increase that to 2048 and see if that helps

Isnt page file VRAM?
EDIT: And to answer; Highest was 62*C. Im telling you, it's not the GPU. If a low requirement game like HL2 is on low and lags...the issue isn't the GPU, especially since its a 9600 GT. It's either the CPU, Mobo, or something inbetween.

58c at idle so it may go near ~90c if not more at full
Start GPU-z & let it run in the background Then play the game for 5-10 minutes after exit the game stop GPU-z & go in to your document & open up the GPU-z sensor log & see what max temp you got there.

EDIT: Just saw your edit...

62c in games (3D) when your card does 58c in ilde?
Something not right there... either you didn't look at all the sensor log (scroll down list) or your 9600GT doesn't bump in to 3D speed get stock at 2D speed..unlikely

Sure drivers are correctly install?

Read my edited post. It was 62 at the highest. And that was after playing L4D2 on a multiplayer versus of the first level of Dead Center at all low settings, 2X MSAA, Bilinear, and Multicore Rendering. I'm telling you, it's probably not GPU. I honestly think it's CPU or something regarding the CPU....

Did you try uninstalling Nortin360?

Install HW monitor if it works
run a game windowed so you can observe the CPU temps while playing
