Lol, clearly you missed the sarcasm in his post.
No, I just had to come with something just as sarcastic, if not, atleast something witty.

If your monitor was a little wider, you'd see the same ads on 3 of the 4 sides of the page along with the vibrant orange background. Honestly, it's a bit excessive.
View attachment 190711
I sized my browser for the 1080p side monitors so I can slide it over to one as needed, So I only see the ad at the top of the page.

he objections and disdain for the ad in question is just that, contention with the choice of ad. This is not a form of disrespect to W1zzard on any level, only a well intentioned yet stern objection to an ad which is very offensive and even insulting to many.
This pretty much says it all thats being said in this thread. Not the ads in general, just this particular ad.

You should add some flashy gif and unmuteable russian hardbass, then it would be a nice ads.
Obnoxious bright orange? Come on. I don't mind ads, problem is the color and I less care about content.

I don't have an issue with ads. I can't get a gpu either. Therefore, I go outside and blow things up with gunpowder. Surf. Fish. Do dumb things in a car. Then I hop on you and go right to the forums, I don't see any ads. Therefore, keep doing what you're doing!

I understand the need for ads to keep the site going but this isnt cool...
Kinda makes me wonder if AI became sentient and is using mining as a cover to get the humans to add GPU's to the collective network to increase it's capabilities.

I would love to get genuine, constructive feedback from you guys - and I would love to keep it on point. As you guys know, we are super focused on relevancy and a quality browsing experience.

From a content perspective of the wallpaper, do you guys see an issue? If so why? Does it boil down to negative feelings towards the offering based on "I don't like the ad or brand, because miners bought the card with my name on it and now this" (valid, but not really the advertiser's fault), or is there more?

Or is it the fact that it is bright orange and thus annoying to look at? So, would it be alright if the brand is kept from using bright colors in their wallpaper and goes for a dark base instead, but naturally communicates the same offering?
The ad was done in very poor taste. I know that TPU needs the ad revenue but the website is alienating its most core members, people that know more than the average person about technology. Short term gains but losing term vision.

The poor taste is that TPU is a tech website about all kinds of things from, processors, to graphics cards. graphics cards or the short supply of cards is the main topic on lots of threads. And its why lots of people are mad at GPU resellers, scalpers. Nicehash is what people are mad at because it uses the GPUs that lots are trying to find but instead they are advertising on a tech website, TPU.

I have a feeling that the nicehash ad will stay for a long time, I'm sure they must of paid top dollar for that spot. But congrats on alienating a large part of your long term audience for short term gains.
My issue is also the color, its so orange. Bright ass orange, make it darker. Even with ad blocker on, the ad is still there.
Anyone know of adblocker that will work on this crap.

I've resold many GPUs and have gotten hate from lots of people on here but I dont care. But turn down the color of the ad.

Anyone know of a good ad blocker that will block that ad.

I have no hate for W1zzard. I enjoy the work he does and shares with us. Should he feel that any revenue brought in based on his decisions, then that's on him. Some folks will like them, other's won't and the remainder won't give a rat's ass.

What I dislike is when forums or businesses allow the face of the company (moderators in this case on the forums) to be judgmental and talk down to people that use the forms, it reflects poorly on the business and/or ownership. W1zzard may be the one behind it all, but those that he puts in the front line are a reflection upon what he wants to show the world with his work.

Are moderators humans? Yes.
Do they have feelings? Yes.
Do they have their own opinions? Yes.

However, the moderators need to tread carefully on how they present their selves. When a moderator comes off as cruel (maybe they keep outing just a few people for personal vendetta) or they're condescending (always talking down to members in their posts) or telling people what they can and cannot feel.....I think you see what I'm getting at....their actions are a reflection upon the place they work for or moderate.

I'd hate to see any moderator putting themselves in a position where they are making a blemish on the organization they're working for.

As for the nicehash ad, I find it a bit disgusting. It certainly wouldn't be my first, second....or 100th choice of an acceptable ad to run with the GPU situation, but it's not my site. Clearly it's not my choice, but I would like to let it be known I'm not approving of it. I have turned adblock back on and I am now blocking any ads that come up on this site.

I use Adblock. Running it doesn't block the add, but all I have to do is right click on the ad, choose Adblock in the pop-up menu and then choose the option "Block this ad". I didn't have to adjust the slide bar to block out anything extra, simply "Block this ad" now prevents the nicehash ad from displaying anymore.
it works for me, no more ad but the color is still orange

I think a great number of gamers are ticked off considering it's really difficult to get a gaming card for a reasonable price right now. In fact it seems quite a bit harder now than the last big crunch in recent memory. I think if this goes on for too long we will start seeing gaming PC market collapse in some areas cause who's gonna buy parts for a new gaming PC if you can't get a decent graphics card too for a reasonable price. Might as well go for a prebuilt at that point or just give up for awhile.

It would probably help for some better market segmentation between mining and gaming cards. I suspect the cost of developing these new fantastic GPU's is at least partially paid for by the miners gobbling up the first few waves of consumer parts so they allow it. I could be wrong.

Not saying miners are bad, just the additional pressures of mining on the market look to cause a break in the gaming PC market. (bleeding over the laptop market too) I imagine something like a 1980's video game crash with a lot of ripple effects. Maybe some OEM's end up going under. Maybe some graphics card vendors go under too if the mining bubble pops and all these used consumer GPU's get dumped back on the market causing a critical saturation of supply. Who knows, we might end up using them for roofing shingles just to keep the sheer amount of cards out of landfills.

on-topic, I think on TPU we are smart enough to make our own decisions, so such ads don't really bother me here, as long as they paid a premium and helping W1zz keep the site doing well, I'm cool with it. I can ignore most things fairly easy. we already all have our positions here on mining or not, so its not like the ad really affects us. but if it gets w1zz more money im for it.

yeah that makes a lot of sense. pre-built makers also are bulk buying more than usual, probably mining the stuff they aren't selling, then as their business increases due to collapse of DIY builders they also can just pop those same gpu's and sell them in the prebuilts, great business model really.

That ad was certainly jarring and while it's certainly not easy on the eyes, I think it could have been substantially worse. Many large sites run far more intrusive ads.

Passionate disagreements aside, I think we, the TPU community, have three options. Direct support (which I prefer), ads of varying intrusivity, or no ads (adblock or otherwise) and the website shuts down. I doubt W1z is doing a big Scrooge McDuck dive into his massive pool of gold coins.

I'm just thankful that we don't have those autoplaying video ads that follow you around as you scroll through the site. I'm also thankful that we don't have mega-shill "reviews" a la Linus.
..or those insultingly clickbaity "Casinos can't stop you from doing THIS!" and "29 embarrassing wedding photos!" sponsored news stories at the bottom of every page.
It's intrusive for TPU but far, far better than what's out there.

When I saw the uproar before bed, I looked at the home page, opened task manager, and was like *shrugs* not making money directly off my machine, let the ad roll!
Yeah, I've heard of some websites with a script in the background that mines crypto for the site owner. I'd imagine that must use CPU only but perhaps some viewers would be interested in replacing ads with gentle (50%?) mining while using the site?
Maybe a button in the user settings that turns ads off for 7 days for the people who really can't tolerate them?

Bottom line, support the sites you frequent or watch the ads get worse.

Edit: Clarity.

I dont support thermaltake products, but i dont kick up a stink if they pay for an ad slot.

I'm glad it's not just me who doesn't support thermaltake.

Also, regarding the ad I don't care. It is obnoxious but in terms of mining , it's tech related. We have a mining thread in this forum ( or did when I use to loiter here all the time arguing with BTA) so don't understand the issue.

Sure miners are buying up gaming cards but that's how this market place works. Eventually production will meet demand and the market will settle, also we're likely to see a massive crash in a few years time and then we'll all get GPUs for cheap.

thats one hell of a stretch, to take the opposite of what i said and decide i said it - and then judge me for it. Thats some serious gymnastics frink.

Gamers. own. graphics cards. its kind of a requirement of PC gaming.

Anything 1060 6GB and above or RX580 8GB and above can GPU mine with a profit these days on nicehash
So to avoid being quoted and having my words altered, i'll state things in a lot more words

If you are a PC gamer, you likely have a 6GB or larger GPU made in the last several years - and nicehash can pay you for the time when you're not gaming - or when you are gaming anyway, like i do.
Gamers already own these GPUs, for gaming. That means gamers mining has zero effect on stock levels of GPUs or high prices... because shit, WE ALREADY OWN THEM.

I overpaid for my GPU because i wanted it at the time prices were high... so you're damned right i'm going to take money from mining while its booming to offset that cost. At $20Au a day between all my systems (and about $3au electric costs) It'd be damn stupid for me to NOT take advantage of this to get some of my money back.

No, you said gamers have 3xxx cards, I'm pretty sure of that. Or did you mean "gamers have gaming GPUs"? Doesn't matter, that doesn't change my reply and frankly it makes it even funnier because then anyone who wants to upgrade their cards aren't real gamers.

And again, good man.

No... i spent $950 on a GTX 1080, and now $2600 on my 3090. I totally saw the price hike and the low stock and dealt with it.

I also am well aware that nicehash mining has NOTHING to do with these shortages, and that users mining at home has zero effect on stock levels... us gamers already HAVE the cards.

These GPU's are luxury items, not a neccesity. There is no reason for anyone to be mad about low stock levels.
gpu is not damn luxury lmfao, a ferrari car maybe.

Apparently the 5k displays mean more room for ads.

Don't need 5k to see the crap, just a little less of the crap on 1080p.

Of course i want to visit here to help wiz to pay the bills, but i don't want to help those who are making it much harder for me to buy, and if i had the silly money to throw at it i wouldn't just a matter of principle.

O yeah and if i am not buying stuff why would i need to come here ?.

Sure go mine and help the problem, yeah no thanks and tbh don't want to keep the PC on 24\7 just to burn electric and what for ? some thing that could collapse yeah again uck that.

Hi,
I'd likely just question the adds validity
Up to 8.us a day, okay prove it because power is not free and I get sort of sick of seeing this description "Modern" thrown around like it supposed to mean something real because that image of a gpu isn't one I even recognize I've never seen a gpu that has a carry handle on it lol
It is valid. Modern GPUs (30 series) can earn upto (and above) 8 USD per day. The 3090 earned 12 USD per day before the latest price dip. At the average US cost of electricity (13.19c per KWH) that amounts to just over a dollar per day (13.19/3 [assuming ~330W power target for 3090] = 4.4c per hour x 24 = 105c per day = 1.05 USD per day). So 12-1 = 11 USD per day. Now that figure is closer to 8 USD for the 3090.
Personally I live in Norway and pay about 0.4 NOK per KWH, which amounts to 0.047 USD. That means I'd pay about 37c per day.

to be honest i couldn't care less about the ad or ads , i didn't notice until i saw this thread , still interesting reading all the comments it brings in but

i was mining about 4 years ago with 1 R9 290x living at work in a portable room so i didn't have to pay for power but it slowly dissolved the card running at 100% 24/7. Point is , e waste with a whole farm must be huge

nicehash has power modes so you can set to low power mode (~100W) and mine away at half performance without the heat and degradation. Seems like a good compromise.
(I undervolt my cards anyway, so i havent bothered with that much)
