I am talking about a different MacPro configuration. There is a standard $3299 (different number) configuration on the Mac store for a dual processor machine with 6GB RAM, an Nvidia GTS120, and a single 640GB drive. If you need me to make a screen grab I will do this.

For $3299 one can buy a dual processor MacPro and this machine is not comparable to a single processor x58 build. It is more comparable to what I and newtekie1 and Willie E are talking about. Today, for serious video editing/encoding a dual-processor machine is better than a single-processor machine (until the GPU/Cuda/OpenCL code gets into mainstream software). Badaboom is cool and the way forward, but we don't know what software this guy is using and he might not be using software that has upgraded to Cuda/OpenCL/GPU yet.

I am sorry I did not make this clearer. We are talking different MacPro configurations here. Yes Apple is expensive but there are very few dual-processor machines out there. It is a niche market aimed mostly at the video-editing, content-creation professional.

The basic dual-processor MacPro (the $3299 standard configuration) is a good machine for the price. If we want a fair comparison we should be comparing a good MacPro build against a similar PC build. The MacPro in this discussion is not a good build (apple charges $400 for those two 1TB drives and $200 for the 4870). Mac people know this. One should buy a standard mac from Apple and buy memory and harddrives after-market. The single-processor MacPro is expensive and like I recommended....



... if one can get away with a single-processor machine then a PC build is a better choice. If one needs a dual-processor machine for serious work, then the dual-processor $3299 MacPro is a good choice. Most people do not need a dual-processor machine.

Actually it is good to wait right now because there will be the autumn Mac refresh coming soon, prices will drop and configurations will change. Likely the MacPro will get the GTS220 or GT240 cards Nvidia just released very soon. There might even be an i5 lynnfield MacPro coming soon. For my workplace, we use computing clusters and simple desktop machines (laptops, iMacs or PCs) and skip the dual-processor boxes.

I apologize for not hating Mac's and being computer agnostic. I hope this post clarifies my point.

Now I'll show you how a self-built workstation with the same class of components costs much less, and how Mac Pro is a ridiculous buy:

Add $100 for shipping, and you're still saving ~$1000. Remember that Mac Pro doesn't include a monitor, or EVEN an OS!

Quadro/Fire cards are geared for OpenGL instead of DirectX.

The best thing about a MAC is the damn comercials...Other than that a PC in MHO is faster, more compatible , way cheaper to upgrade, Just all around better....The only reason to go Mac would be use of software that wont run on PC, but with that being said I can't think of any apps that a PC doesn't have a equivalent solution to.

Oh god, the Mac commercials are so pathetic its ridiculous. I started my computing experience with Macs in the 6.0 and used it through OSX. Of course I started using PC's predominantly when Mac came out with the later variations of 6. Once you go PC, you never go back. With the exception of those who fall prey to a marketing scheme thinking Mac's are special in some unexplainable way. A huge rip off for aesthetics really. Apple care is a joke BTW. They would cover their overpriced ipods with a lifetime warranty if they really cared about their customers.

If Apple continues selling items exclusively through the "aesthetic factor" they will continue to be a boutique vender hopelessly clawing at the wow factor of uninformed geeks.

I have used macs before and I would say macs aren't worth the money anymore in my eyes, game support is terrible, even with VMWARE, and the only apps that I see as worthwhile are still Photoshop and Final Cut, now Final Cut is a reason to buy a mac, but most of the otheres aren't, and from using my sisters macbook for years, no, macs are not easier to use than a pc.

But Final Cut is the sh*t when your doing videos.

And yes AppleCare are some of the biggest douchebags you will ever talk to, and they will rip you off the first chance they get and lie too, I saw this firsthand.

I like the new ipods though, , like the zuneHD more though, more hackability there, can you imagine playing CS Source on that, that would be awesome with a little controller, but horrible with the touchscreen like those Iphone games.

Sorry, I just find them way too expensive for what hardware you actually get. But thats my personal view and as Ive never owned one I wouldnt dis anyone that owns one or is thinking about buying one.

now, I would say weather he gets a pc or a mac he would be good to go, but towards audio/video production, I lean a little tiny bit towards a mac, and I mean a tiny bit because Final Cut Pro has a few more features than Premeire

Gaming=PC
Internet/watching movies=Tie, depending on who you have a warranty with
3D Production(Games or General)=PC
3D Production(Movies)=mac
Audio/Video=Tie' leans toward mac

i think macs are great,although i don't like the over price of their products but they are actually good product to use.
You are bound to see something like 20-40 people in the small apple stores checking their goods.
Thing is mac is used for audio and video encoding,they are made just for that.
I've tried the OSX and i kinda like it but i'm not used to it and their products are always top quality in my opinion.
If your friend wants buy a mac then let him buy it,his money he do what he wants with it

Umm, it most certainly does come with an OS. But, you should've grabbed Vista Home Premium to get that same features as OS X out of the box. Oh wait a minute, that's right, you get an artificial ram limit of 16GB with Home Premium. So, to get the same capabilities from Windows, you have to grab Ultimate.

Next, you are cheaping out on the mobo. The Mac Pro can take 4 gfx cards, therefore has 4 16x 2.0 slots (physical) available. 2 @ 16x and 2 @ 4x. This is about as close as it gets (considering the Mac boards are custom). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121377

While those 2 changes still don't quite make up all the price difference, you still don't get the level of Support as you do by buying an OEM system. Sure, to us enthusiasts, it makes sense to build our own, but to the standard consumer, or professional in need of a stable and well supported workstation, it does not. OEM systems make more sense to them. Now, what OEMs offer the same configuration and features as that dual cpu Mac Pro at a significantly lower price?

I basically just meant that regardless how well played an argument to the contrary is, if person prefers Macs or has their mind set on one you won't change it with a parts list. I have nothing against them either - if I wasn't such an avid game and "tinkerer" I would be happy with an iMac.

I've been having an issue with TPU, where my IMG tags get replaced with URL tags when I post the message. I asked about it in the Comments and Feedback section, but never got a response. I'm guess you just ran into the same bug...

And I loved Tailspin! That show was awesome!

thats a feature, not a bug!


its there to stop someone quoting posts with 10 images in them, and have quotes repeatedly showing the same image after image after image...

it defaults to URL tags now, and they get converted to URL tags in quotes.
