NVIDIA Crypto Mining Processor 170HX Card Spotted with 164 MH/s Hash Rate

NVIDIA announced the first four Crypto Mining Processor (CMP) cards earlier this year with performance ranging from 26 MH/s to 86 MH/s. These cards were all based on existing Turing/Ampere silicon and featured board partner-designed cooling systems. NVIDIA appears to have introduced a new flagship model with the passively-cooled 170HX that is based on the NVIDIA A100 accelerator which features a GA100 GPU.

This new model is the first mining card to be designed by NVIDIA and features 4480 CUDA cores paired with 8 GB of HBM2E memory which are both considerably less than what is found in other GA100 based products. NVIDIA has also purposively limited the PCIe interface to Gen 1 x4 to ensure the card cannot be used for tasks outside of cryptocurrency mining. The 170HX has a TDP of 250 W and runs at a base clock of 1140 MHz with a locked-down BIOS that does not allow memory overclocking resulting in a hash rate of 164 MH/s when using the Etash algorithm.

I think the cost to eth hashrate of these outperforms ASICs. When the goal is long term profit rather than casual mining whilst still being able to game these would make more sense and likely be more reliable.
 
Where do people even buy these cards? I kind of want stuff like this for the novelty.

Don't forget: it's still a perfectly functional GPGPU accelerator. You can do whatever you want with it, like using to accelerate JTR or hashcat for pentesting and security research (or hacking), deploying super-fast GPU-accelerated databases, building educational super-computers, doing AI and CV research (or building FIFA botfarm in Ukraine), etc. etc. etc.

Most likely directly from manufacturers. Haven't seen a single one of their new mining cards in the wild yet, and even this thing is probably just an ES snagged from one of OEMs.
 
Bitcoin is not mined with GPUs.
But the entire crypto-market is tied to BTC exchange rate(except stablecoins, of course).
 
Currently, around 18.5 million bitcoins have been mined. This leaves less than three million that have yet to be introduced into circulation.

Your acquisitions department calls the manufacturer's sales department and their first question is "how many do you want, in multiples of a 1000?" That's not really stuff for consumers. You might be able to buy one in a few years when they're no longer used and some might be sold during liquidation sales and such.

CMP30HXs are available here in Russia starting from around 600USD. Haven't seen higher end cards though.

After some discussion it would seem 8GB is enough to get some good mining done. So I retract my statement.

I dont see the problem. This isn't a LHR card this is a mining card. It doesn't even have video outputs. There is no purpose to have more vram.

Um, I'll admit my knowledge of mining is less than expansive, but last time I checked where GPU coin mining is concerned, the more VRAM the better and 8GB is on the lean side. Is that not so?

Pointless gpu, in the end this will become a terrible heat generator and nothing more, even asics is way way better than this. You see, this has no use other than mining eth, other algos dont take advantage of a high memory bandwidth like this, funny, the article dont talk about price hehe, must be an arm and a leg.

i think memory speed is more important than the amount of it.. it seems 8 gig is enough.. i expect eth to go up significantly in price as well.. it will be interesting to see how this effects mining rewards.. mine seem to be going up but they are a bit all over the place at the moment..

Every chip doesn't have a fan, and that doesnt make them passively cooled. Every chip has a a heatsink, which when applied with a certain CFM and 21C is able to stay within the temperature tolerances. This CFM is responsibility of chassis AirFlow system, which is what cools it.

I expected better from TPU.

Etherium needs like 5 gb. By the time it needs more than 8gb it should already be POS. I don't think there's any coin that takes more than 8gb to mine.

Passively cooled means theres no fan on it, that's all. I think you're reading too much into that.
