ATI’s Radeon HD 5870 was released in Sept. 2009.
Let’s get down to business. The HD 5000 series has been out for 6+ months now. That’s 6 months sooner than NVIDIA and looking at ATI’s new release history we can "IMO" expect the upcoming HD 6800’s to get released sometime within June 2010 to Sept 2010 (Q2 2010 to Q3 2010).
AMD’s CEO claimed a 2nd half of 2010 release date for the upcoming HD 6800’s series.

There’s no way NVIDIA can get something out within the same time frame as ATI will and keep it profitable. 1st it wouldn't be practical for NVIDIA to get something new out the door at the same time as ATI due to there past and present Fermi issues and 2nd NVIDIA would lose an arm and perhaps a leg if they didn’t make enough sales and money on its current Fermi generation let alone release something new.
Sounds to me ATI has a good lead in this graphics race for this technology and the next. This is real good news that finally ATI is above NVIDIA and will only push the competition to the next level(s).
