scroll of text for abbreviations

Aah, I was talking about ones like GHz, DDR, TFT, GB.
These are perfect for the idea, as they are acronymed when you see them elsewhere in the world; on product boxes etc. We would never write GigaHertz or Double Data Rate unless we were asked what it means.

I think ones like CMIIW and AFAIK I think are ok, they're not overused. Once or twice per page at the most I'd guess

If you don't know what GHz, DDR, TFT, and GB stand for then what the hell are you doing on a Tech forum anyway?

It's only going to spread the use of stupid acronyms that people are too lazy to type, and then have to hoover mouse over it to work out what it says anyway. What the heck is wrong with good old text?

I am totally against this idea and will make TPU look like it's run by incompetent children.

Why the hostility? Obviously I know what they mean, I'm talking about for new members. People who don't know what they mean are probably coming here to get help.
I didn't come here for an argument, just to stick my view across.

It's not hostility. Why would you visit a site you know NOTHING about? It's like me going into a tune your car up forum and then asking everybody what this that and the other means and why my car isn't fast enough.
If I wanted my car to be faster/whatever, i'd at least do the basic research first.

It's like the world is becoming too damn lazy and can't be bothered to do anything by themselves. Instead everyone wants that quick fix, that quick answer, that quick whatever to make it seem like they actually have a clue what they're doing, when in fact they don't.

How does anyone expect to learn anything when somebody else is telling them what to do all the time?

That is a good question I mean shit why on earth would someone young and new to computers join a tech forum? Hell when I firt got here I didn't know some of the acronyms I either used context clues like in grade school or googled it. I was just saying this would be a bit easier.

Searching for your own answers is much more constructive than have someone just tell you.

it is nice that you think that way it would also be nice for people to not have to search for shit.

you seem to think you know anything lets say i am helping someone oc a core i3 on 1156. do you know what MCH, PCH, ICH all mean? got any idea what they all do? lets say we are oc'ing an AM3 any idea what vdda is for? google it cause that should help narrow it down for you

I can see where you guys are coming from, but I'd willing to bet the majority of users here know what GHz, DDR etc stands for, is it worth the trouble of implementing this?

read the post above and tell me what those mean

even if the "feature" said what it is, I don't think we are going to offer a definition in the box are we? You still end up at Google figuring out what either IMC or Internal Memory Controller is for, no?

Nope I don't. I don't overclock. And if I did, I would go find out how, and in the process find out what those terms mean. :nutkick:

I don't intend taking any 'sides' in this argument - after all it is W1zzard who has the final say in whether this idea can be implemented on the forum or not, and if yes, whether it'd be worth all the trouble.

Before I first registered on TPU the only things I knew about pc's (apart from how to switch them on) was only how to change a graphics card and upgrade ram. After lurking I learnt how not only how to assemble a pc but also how to overclock. (Thanks TPU!) Only then I registered on TPU and posted about my E4300 @ 3Ghz to get feedback, in 2007.

There was tons of pc-jargon I didn't understand - English not being my native language didn't help much

What I mean to say is don't expect new forum members to know about it all "otherwise what are they doing on a pc-tech forum". Many people, like me, learned a lot from TPU. If they had felt that they just had to leave because they were not knowledgeable enough to form part of the community I would say TPU wouldn't then be achieving its aims as a tech forum.

I don't mean to be a prick but if you can link to a vBulletin plugin that does what you want you'd be about 90 billion times more likely to have W1zzard take notice; Which should increase your probability of success to 1E-34%. :D

If you're wondering I did go google diving for just such a plugin and came up empty handed.

There's some mystique to acronyms. Who hasn't stared at a three letter abbreviation for 30 seconds pondering the question, "why you do dis?". It's a puzzle that everyone attempts whether or not they want to.

want to give a reason instead of just thread crapping
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL no. :D

lol...can't you just install a Bing toolbar and it will pick up on all the words anyways?

i agree with this 100% this isnt facebook

So how many threads have people helped in were someone asks what fsb is? Can you google it yes do people still ask yes. If you think that's dumb cool I am not saying this is facebook I honestly could care less if someone posts "wtf dis is bs" and you don't know what wtf or bs mean that's not the acronyms I give a shit I am talking about tech related ones. There is obiously a plug in there is a damn ss of a vb forum in the first post that shows it working. It also shows what I meant. If you were new asking how to lift your truck and I said use an aal all you do is mouse over it and it says add a leaf pretty fucking simple

wow way to cop an attitude.

I would say simply this. I dont think we should make life easy for those who dont want to learn, sort of weeds out the hassles of multiple lines of questions or blame being placed when they blow something up. Making them work for it shows drive to me, and I am more apt to help those who arent afraid to help themselves. I brought up bing based on laziness;) simple, already in action, takes a second to install.

If you cant take a bit of criticism on the concept, maybe next time have someone else post the topic and watch it from the bleachers and see what happens. The attitude and lack of a poll to vote is making this thread go downhill really fast.

i am getting frustrated because people are not reading the whole post and subsequent posts

no one said anyone did not want to learn some people in a public forum will ask dumb questions and this would answer quite a few of them before they even ask. look at all of the guides most have "common" abbreviations and acronyms.

Universal terms
  • BCLK- Short for Base CLocK. This is the base frequency at which your CPU will drive the rest of the PC. The limiting factors in max BCLK will be the cpu itself (luck of the draw) and the motherboard (luck of the draw/quality control). (BCLK)CPU Multi = CPU Frequency. For 32nm Westmere chips it is best to overclock with chips that have high multipliers as max BCLK is low with these chips. At and beyond 200 BCLK the qpi/vtt voltage required to post become too high to be considered safe to overclock for over 24 hours.
  • DRAM- Main Memory, ur DDR3, the triple channel goodness, whatever... (BCLK)Memory Multipler = DRAM frequency.
  • Uncore- This is in the block diagram but not written. Uncore is a frequency that the CPU handles everything from the north bridge to the south bridge. Uncore must be at least 2x as great as the memory frequency. This can be an issue if your CPU/motherboard can not handle an insanely high uncore, so for the record a memory overclock will affect the uncore stability. An overclock can get a special edge by pushing the uncore beyond 2(memory multi). If you have room to OC it then go for it. SPECIAL NOTE there are substancial findings to suggest the average overclocker can increase their uncore multi by 1 and may achieve higher system stability even at mild OCs. This can even reduce voltage at higher OCs and is a MUST to consider for MAX OC.
  • QPI- Quick Path Interface is the memory I/O for the CPU. With CPUs like the i7 920 the low QPI rating can interfere with MAX OC. Only a few motherboards have the options to circumvent this barrier.
  • IOH- North Bridge, affected directly by Uncore
  • ICH- South Bridge, less affected by Uncore than the North Bridge
  • CPU Multiplier- Explained in the BCLK bullet as a factor of overall CPU frequency the CPU multiplier represents the CPU's proportional speed to the BCLK. For a x21 CPU multiplier you would take the BCLK frequency and that's how many cycles the CPU completes before it is addressed by the BCLK.
These universal terms are the bread and butter of your overclock. You want to tune your boards to acheive overclocks in these domains. Depending on the benchmark or application there are a number of ways to set the BCLK/DRAM/Uncore/QPI for increased performance.

would assist with people learning if this was implemented. seeing how it would remove some of the whats this mean posting.

i also did not post a poll because i am the OP and would prefer people posting why they like or dont like something. if w1z wants a poll he is more than welcome to put one on here or PM me. at this point i am not adding one.

those of you who didn't do any research all vbulletin boards support this and this is a very very low level version on how to do it

First off it doesnt matter if I know what is and isnt in the server, you act as if W1zz has a ton of time and can just do things on a whim.

Secondly the poll will make it much simpler for W1zz to look and see the yay/nay status of the idea with one glance.

I'm not completely against what you are trying to do, I am simply at this point stating what will help your case. Swearing and bashing others intelligence on the subject is just going to end up with someone on vacation, and we dont want that.

Calm down, add a poll, see how the interest pans out. When you get good results in the poll, I'm sure w1zz will take action, at least to say yes or no;)

i am clam see in a great mood

:nutkick: (this is meant as a joke ;))

ill add a poll later on as for it being in the server someone asked if there was a plugin and there is this built in

i have an idea, instead of mucking up the whole forum with scoll over text, why not just make a sticky with every known tech abbreviation with definition?

It would be best if there was just an option to turn it off in your User CP. Problem solved.
